thank you for the suggestions! much appreciated!

Suggestions for outing with vegetarian?

Of course there is The Coup, but I am looking for a nice restaurant to take my good friend for a post-Christmas celebration as she is only in town every couple of years.
She is a strict vegetarian (no fish) but does eat dairy. We did the cheese fondue at Table a couple of years ago.

Thanks!

Looking for Herbs de Provence??

Looking for herbs de provence -- Linas used to carry it but no longer ...

Nandos in the NE

Just ate at Nandos in the NE (36st and 32 Ave), I loved it! It was cheap, large portions, very kid-friendly. They specialize in Peri-Peri grilled chicken (you request the degreee of spiciness). The sides were very decent. We paid $25 for a huge mixed platter of chicken with two sides.

This is my new favorite place.

Mama's Gone! (Calgary)

Thanks, everyone, I will try Pimentos. We tried to slip into Bocavino -- alas, children are not allowed. (Because it is licensed as a bar? Not sure exactly. Maybe they just didn't like the look of Thing 1 and Thing 2?)

Tried the Virgin Olive about a month ago -- wretched! About 2 circles of hell below Chiantis on 32nd Ave. NE. (My mother's favorite place, LOL).

Mama's Gone! (Calgary)

Just thought I'd post that Mama's on 16th Ave is gone -- it is to be a sushi place. Mama's has been there FOREVER. Not that I ate there often -- not a good value for my money, but I favor the cheap eats.

Still looking for a good neighbourhood (Renfrew/Bridgeland) pizza place that we can bring the kids since it is IMPOSSIBLE to get into Sandro's these days without a reservation.

Da Guido -- Yum! (Calgary)

Went to Da Guido for a private Christmas party last week -- very impressed. I have to say, that I did not have high expectations from the outside (stucco building), but it is quite lovely inside. We had the private room and the service was great -- the only complaint was that the servers couldn't actually get in the room with all of us sitting, so we had to pass our plates down, family style.
Most of us had the "chef's special". Appetizer was lightly breaded calamari with scampi in a wine/lemon sauce. Beautifully done. A simple tossed green salad with a simple vinigrette -- no slimy pieces as I've experienced at more than several expensive restaurants! Perfectly balanced vinigrette, with a rounded flavors. Pasta served family-style, and a plated meat dish (veal scallopini with asparagas, and chicken in a peppercorn cream sauce --) nothing "fusion" or unusual, but all done perfectly. I had the ice cream (pear) for dessert, which was beautiful. The coffee was drinkable, as well.
Would definitely go back. Definitely never bringing the young children with.

Best Place to Sharpen Kitchen Knives? (Calgary)

I usually get them sharpened at Keen Edge down in Dover ... Anyone have a good experience with the mobile sharpening guy? (don't even suggest The Knifery, people! I like my knives!)

Delicious Panini at Fiasco Gelato (Cgy)

Dan orders his beans from the States, mostly. He used to use Sweet Maria's a lot, but he's moved on to someone else, I think. He usually does a batch and then freezes the beans. His set-up is a bit intense (although low-tech) -- a box fan, grilling mitts, wire baskets, thermometers, timers ...

Calgary - best Black Forest Cake

Edelweiss Village in NE has the best black forest cake ... not the best cake, but the best black forest cake. What about Yamatoto on Centre?

Favorite food shops in Calgary?

I love Scapones (near the airport). I can usually find some screaming deals there (ie, decent whole wheat pasta) and I love their lunch counter.

Delicious Panini at Fiasco Gelato (Cgy)

Sold, sold, sold. I will have to check it out.

Checked out Phil&Sebastian today -- good coffee, and nice baked goods. (thank god no muffins" a la Costco.)

Have to say, though, my husband Dan makes the best coffee in the city. He roasts on the gas BBQ.

Calgary: Diner Deluxe Sold?!

Coming home a couple of weeks ago I noticed a weird message on Diner Deluxe's signage -- something about being closed for a week as they were bought by "Dizney"?

What the? Anyone know the scoop about my beloved neighbourhood diner?

Home meal delivery recs in Calgary needed

I hate SPUD. When I was a regular, I got sub-par veggies every week.

There was an excellent article on take-home meals in this months City Palate magazine.

I have heard excellent things about Spoonfed.

Judy Wood is cooking at Mise en Place, so it *must* be good.

Good Take-home New Years Eve Dinner Calgary

New Years Out is too much trouble right now with 2 young children (just try finding a babysitter!), so any suggestions for a good take-home special dinner?

Sunterra is OK, and is really the only option that I have come up with that is not deli style (ie, Miseenplace, or Fresh in Bridgeland).

Any other suggestions?

Open Range

We went there (Dec 20th 2006) for dinner. It was good, nothing to rave about. Entrees were $25-30. I had the lamb chops with a pecan demi-glace sauce, which was fine. I mean, I know I can make this at home. Dessert was bang-on though -- chocolate pot de creme with port-soaked cherries, better than I could have made it. Service was really very good but the place was not full.

I have to say that my experience (food-wise) was much better at Big Fish.

Cactus Club -- any good? (Calgary)

Hmmm ... Ok, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll give it a pass then.

Cactus Club -- any good? (Calgary)

OK, more than several people have talked about the Cactus Club on Macleod Tr. (most recently in my French Fry thread) -- so, is it any good? (particularly value for money).

I usually avoid (1) restaurants on Macleod Tr. (2) anything that sounds franchise-y, but maybe that is just "old school" of me?

Korean BBQ?

just made it (finally!) to Bow Bulgogi and loved loved loved it. Was just like the Korean food I had growing up -- but even better. The BBQ comes with sides so it was much more economical than a lot of other Asian restaurants. It's pretty healthy food, and they tolerated my kids to boot.

Best French Fries?

ooooooh ... I just had lunch at Holy Grill -- the "classic burger" and the beet fries. Delish! The fries did look good -- I'm going back to try them. I was a big fan of this place many incarnations ago when the crazy Italian guy was running it (with more or less the same menu, scratch)
I'll have to try Divinos -- I haven't been since they moved (I always had the lamb burger ...)
Don't you think that 17th Ave needs a Belgian fry place?!

Best French Fries?

OK, where can I get really good fries? I'm talkin' handcut, thick, crispy on the outside (without coating them!) but soft on the insides, just lightly salted, NO hotlamping ...

Peter's and Boogie's are terrible (not handcut and wilty to boot), Diner Deluxe are too breakfasty and herby, Chicken on the Way comes close ...

Opinions? There was this tiny place in Seattle that served (only) Belgian style fries with flavored mayo ... oh how I miss them.

Calgary: Sausage

OK, I love sausage. I blame the year I spent in Germany. Sausage is getting better here in Calgary with Valbella, Spolumbos (of course), but the best (I think) is Old Country Sausage at the Curry Barracks. The weisswurst actually tastes like weisswurst! And they have 3 (count 'em) different kinds of mettwurst!

Good, cheap sushi for tonight in Calgary?

I love Wa's on Centre St just off 16th Ave across from the Safeway. TINY place, but oh so good!

Seattle with Kids -- suggestions?

Ah, sorry about the vagueness. We like to eat in the lower priced end of the restaurant continuum (which also tends to be more tolerant of children ...) -- Red Mill, Baguette Box, Paseo. We usually stay in Phinney or Ballard. My kids are well-behaved -- for a 3 year old. ;)

Thanks!

Seattle with Kids -- suggestions?

Back in Seattle for a visit -- but with a 3 yr old and a 6 mth old. Any kid-friendly suggestions that are adult-edible? (Hey, can't eat at Red Mill every night ;)

Organic Express/SPUD

I was a loyal customer of Organic Express for years, but I am SOOO disappointed in SPUD. The quality is just not there (although the prices are still high).

Is this just me? Others also having this problem? I love that it is delivered to my door, but it's just not worth it.
