Finger limes

I've gotten them from Specialty Produce in the past. Here is a link where I talk about them for anyone who doesn't know what they are: http://fruitmaven.com/2009/12/green-s...

What do you make for breakfast on Christmas morning?

Yep. It's this one from Valley Green Inn, made with Challah.

Can you recommend a Thai cookbook, given these proclivities?

I honestly can't believe no one has recommended the book Terrific Pacific by Anya von Bremzen. I guess it doesn't meet the criteria because there are no pictures, but I really can't recommend it higher. I have probably 80 cookbooks and this one is a standout for thai food. Absolutely delicious.

Brie stuffed french toast with caramelized bananas and walnuts. OMG. Delicious and WAY over the top.

Best pears for salad

I actually vote for Warren Pears if you can get them (http://fruitmaven.com/2011/12/warren-...). More commonly, I would say Bosc or Seckel. Seckel has amazing flavor but is a small pear. If you want crisp, then I agree with other responders that the various asian pears would work.

warren pears

I just got these from Specialty Produce in San Diego last week and it looks like Frog Hollow has them again. I wrote up a review off them on my blog a couple days ago. Good stuff.

Do you have food goals?

Ha! I have reviewed star fruit, but you are right it didn't make the list. Good catch. I just added it.

I have never eaten a delicious one. In fact I think this phrase sums up my feeling on it:

This fruit just screams pizazz the second you see it. And then you taste it…and it mumbles “meh”.

Popular flavors that you don't care for

Watermelon for me, which is crazy because I love fruit.

Do you have food goals?

I had a goal of tasting 250 different variety of fruit. I just hit it and upped the goal to 1000. You can see the list on my site with about 100 of the fruit reviewed. it's been a really fun adventure so far.

SD - Casual Dining for 4 or 6

Seriously? No one has any ideas for this? That must be why I can't think of any either.

SD - Casual Dining for 4 or 6

Hi - looking for a good spot in San Diego for four or six people to go for dinner somewhere between hillcrest and PB (so it feels like we are "meeting in the middle" - whatever that means). Nothing too fancy or too casual - I'm thinking $14-$22 entrees. Comfortable vibe for a group of people that don't know each other well - no loud music so that you can't hear each other talking. Any style food should work. Thoughts? I've thought of El Agave in Old Town, but need to provide the group with a few options. Thanks.

You have $5 in San Diego

Mama testa offers their steamed tacos (any four of the four they offer) for half price during happy hour. So four tacos for $2.75. I would definitely put that in the CHEAP column. Plus free chips and salsa. Plus even during normal hours their rolled tacos are only $5.50 - barely above the $5 limit and they are piled with lettuce, salsa fresca and on a bed of beans - plus the free chips and salsa again. Del Muneco - two crunchy beef tacos with rice and beans are just over $6. And that's just a few I can think of off the top of my head. I don't know how you can not put this place in the cheap list - ESPECIALLY for the quality.

first time in san diego--any suggestions

I would suggest Mama Testa in Hillcrest on University Ave. About 25 different tacos from various regions in Mexico. I highly recommend the rolled tacos in broth or the catfish taco. mmm.

Recipes for Quinoa?

I just made this last night:

Saute some chopped garlic, scallions and onion in a pan with olive oil. After a few minutes add the quinoa (rinse first) and toast it until light brown. Add chicken stock (ratio 2:1 liquid to quinoa), thyme and a bay leaf and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Fluff the quinoa and remove the bay leaf. Add lemon zest and chopped black olives. YUM.

san diego - malasada

Anyone know where to get good malasadas in San Diego? When I lived in Hawaii a few years ago I used to get them quite often from a portuguese bakery called Agnes Bakery (and of course there are the famous hawaiian Leonard's malasadas). Anyone know where to get them here? I have a craving.

San Diego - Steak

Hi. I'm looking for a steakhouse (or just a place that has good steak) somewhat close to SeaWorld that is OK if a two year old attends with us. It is a behaved two year old, but a two year old none the less. Any ideas?

Beans in cookies

I have seen these recipes. I'm just curious if anyone has done it. I'm thinking a combo of beans and butter might work and wouldn't sacrifice the texture as much as eliminating all of the butter. I guess I'll have to try it and experiment myself. I don't want to just eat less of the all butter cookies, since that isn't really the point. I just find the whole idea of other options to be fascinating and potentially great tasting, with the healthier aspects as a lesser side benefit. Thanks for anyone's thoughts. I wonder if their are any food scientists out there who could chime in on how butter or oil affect texture and what else could be substituted.

Beans in cookies

Has anyone ever tried replacing the butter in a cookie recipe with white bean puree? Or how about with butternut squash or sweet potato puree? I'm looking for a few successful recipes that don't end up too "cakey". I still want good cookie texture and of course flavor. No applesauce substitutions please, but let me know if you have any other interesting subs. Thanks in advance. I'm a cookie snob, so it can't just taste good for low fat - in has to taste good - end of story. Know what I mean!

Best Rolled Tacos in San Diego?

I second the Mama Testa recommendation. I don't remember the spanish names, but they have beef rolled tacos, chicken rolled tacos and then both of them in a broth. The rolled tacos in the broth are DIVINE - I prefer the beef for this, but that's just my taste). They also have rolled tacos with no filling that I thought were fantastic - called Aire or something like that. They surprised me because they were crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Very, very good.

Region to Close?

I thought I might as well just post the email. Here you go:

Dear Friends,
For nearly three years, you have been a major part of our success here at Region and many of you have become like family to us. For this we are deeply appreciative. And because we know how very important family is, we have made the difficult decision to close our beloved Region so that Chef/Owner Michael Stebner can be reunited with his children in Phoenix.

So often in life when one door closes another one opens. A wonderful opportunity has come up for Michael and Ally in Phoenix and so San Diego’s loss will be Phoenix’s gain.

We could not have achieved what we have without you. To thank you for your caring and support, starting next week we will feature *Your Favorites* every week until we close on October 20th. These are the signature dishes that Chef Michael and Sous Chef Ally are renowned for, the ones you always rave about. In addition to our regular seasonally fresh menu, you won’t want to miss your last shot at these tasty gems!

Here’s the line-up for our “Gems of the Week”:

Week of 9/12 - Antipasti Platter
Week of 9/19 - Grilled Octopus
Week of 9/26 - Lobster Risotto
Week of 10/3 - House-made Salumi
Week of 10/10 - Pasta Carbonara
Week of 10/17 - Chocolate Boca Negra Cake

We hope you’ll join us for the countdown as we celebrate each of you and all that San Diego has meant to us.

Many thanks,

Chefs/Owners Michael Stebner & Allyson Colwell
