Chow in my supermarket?

One of my many gripes with the post-modern supermarket is the relentless advertising that we shoppers must endure. Displays are not enough, apparently, we now also must listen to commercials at the checkout and produce aisle.

I popped in yesterday after work to pick up some emergency tortillas at my neighborhood Albertson's, and overheard the dreaded television prattling away in the nearby produce area. I attempted to tune it out until I heard familiar sound, and I ran over. There, on the screen was a video produce tip--from Chow.

Wow. More power to yah, Chow, for trying to make the funding work whatever way you can. I can't begrudge you for advertising. But Albertson's? I mean, on the website you spend lots of time talking about quality ingredients and local food, and there's so little of this at my local Albertson's (it's an especially lame one, close to the university). Plus, like I mentioned, being talked to while shopping is really annoying, and now I'm being annoyed by a site I frequent anyway. I like to think the money I spend on things there is enough to keep my supermarket afloat, but apparently not--in-store advertising is now required, too. Sigh.

Mark Bittman: Expert in Residence!

I enjoyed Food Matters and am wondering if you're still on the diet you created. I'm a fan, but have found being 'vegan until 6' a real challenge. I save money by bringing leftovers to work, and while I love cooking dinner, I often don't have time to create separate vegan meals for lunch. Suggestions?

Don't forget Red Feather downtown. Its menu features many locally-sourced ingredients. Great atmosphere, great food.

Best places to order booze online?

Thanks! I'm wondering if there are any discounters with good prices. We have about 3 types of Absinthe in our local stores, not much else.

Best places to order booze online?

On a recent trip to NYC, I fell in love with the Italian liquor Amaro. Living in Idaho, I can't find it anywhere (well, the liquor stores are state-owned). What's the most affordable place to order it online? I'm also interested in hearing if it's worth it to order and ship things like Absinthe. Thanks!

Boise Restaurants

Glad you asked!

El Pueblo, 5234 W Fairview Ave, is tucked way back in the corner of a strip mall (don't bother with the bigger stand-alone Los Beto's in the parking lot, it doesn't hold a candle).
Campos Market, 413 N Orchard St.

Both are also meat markets, which is handy.

Dude, Moon's sucks. Hollandaise sauce from a mix. "Homemade" corned beef hash included deli sliced corned beef. Am NOT a fan of the Cottonwood Grill. Bad, overpriced food.

I do recommend Mazzah for lunch!

Try also the City Grill downtown. Reasonably priced good food.

Also the taquerias in Boise are a good bet.

Boise recommendations?

Aw, c'mon, it's not that bad, certainly not bad enough to recommend the chains over the local restaurants.

Where to get bulk nuts online?

Greetings!

We use lot of nuts around here. In addition to snacking on the occasional handful of walnuts, we use a variety of nuts in granola, which we make almost weekly (and eat it with homemade yogurt--yum). Buying bagged nuts at the grocery store is just too pricey, and the bulk nuts just don't taste very good. I live in Boise, so there aren't many local option for good staples. Where have you found the best online nuts? I'm looking for walnuts, almonds and unsweetened coconut. Organic would be ideal.

Thanks!

8th St. Wine Co., Red Feather and Bittercreek all buy from local providers whenever possible. All have good food.

Berryhill is great.

For Chinese, try Wok King on Broadway...would be average on a coast, but for Boise, it's good.

I think Leku Ona is overpriced for the bunch of boiled meat and potatoes they serve.

OH! OH!! And try Kanak Attack out on Broadway (same strip as Wok King) - they've been catering for years, and now have a home. Fabulous BBQ, and lots of it. Or if you're craving polynesian style tapas-y small plates (and who wouldn't?), this is the place.
