Dinner at Troquet

We also went for our anniversary. Our first time - we relied on Chowhound posts for some choices. Opted for the foie gras and oysters for a first. Both wonderful. Second course was suckling pig and halibut - both delicious and beautiful presentation. Dessert of chocolate cherry tart was perfect ending - along with a nice port. Definitely one of the best places in town. Must agree that it is pricey but the service, ambience and food are tops.

Chutney

I would like to purchase an assortment of chutneys for a family member who vacationed in the Caribbean and fell in love with the wonderful assortments they offered. Does anyone know of a place in the Boston/Metrowest area where I could purchase these? Or a good spot online? Thanks.

Wine Thyme, North Conway, NH

This place opened in mid-December. Half the shop is wine tasting/purchasing. Other side is dinner/tapas. We had dinner last Friday - tapa servings are equal to a meal. The parmesan pesto appetizer with fresh bread is outstanding. Desserts are exquisite - and good tasting! In between, we had swordfish and chicken dinners which were very nice. We liked the spot so much, we returned for Sunday brunch: brie en croute with apples, walnut, cranberries and cherries accompanied by caesar salad. Wines are wonderful - selection you cannot get at the NH liquor stores. I hope this place finds a following. Nice people - good food. It's where the Coyote Rose used to be right in the center of North Conway.

Biltmore, Newton

My meal wasn't the only one to be disappointing. The menu is limited - used to be very adventuresome. There are better places to go in the neighborhood.

McDonagh's, Galway City

Was very disappointed in this place. Eight of us ate here on a Sunday night - all were disappointed. My thoughts - if you like to eat at McDonald's, then McDonagh's is the place for you for fish.

Had dinner at the Malt House - great experience. Would definitely recommend - service spectacular - food same category.

Biltmore, Newton

Went to the Biltmore yesterday for lunch. Fried pickles - yummy; ribs - so-so; medium rare hamburger - well done and grey (pre-cooked??); glass of rose - $10!!!; fries - delish. Great service - place empty - won't go back.

Waiting to hear of old management/chef's new place - hopefully it's in Newton or Needham.

Dinner in Galway City

Will be in Galway for two weeks in August - 9- 23 - celebrating a 40th wedding anniversary. Would like to take our family to a fine dinner (with two young granddaughters). Can anyone give suggestions for a few places?

Quince Bistro

Four of us had dinner last night. Two had the $35 prix fixe menu - sea bass over couscous. Only negative was the tasteless couscous. The other entree was shrimp with parpardelle. Nice tangy sauce, shrimp tasty. Tried the crab cakes - very good. Had a nice Spanish wine. Place relatively empty - but it was a Tuesday night. Second visit - a good spot.

RW - Rocca

Four of us went to RW at Rocca - we had viewed the posts of others. We had a great evening of food and drink. Everything was wonderful. The only down side -- The noise was so loud we were unable to hold much of a conversation.

Blue on Highland

Had dinner here tonight. I would rate it as a B/B-. It's quite the neighborhood favorite - crowded with lots of young people. Had the cauliflower soup special - good. Husband had arugula salad with parmesan - but was not real parmesan cheese. I had the steak frites - frites not very good - almost frozen food variety - green beans uncooked. Steak cooked perfectly, not much flavor. Other entree was the swordfish special over polenta and eggplant - deemed pretty average. No surprises here - just good neighborhood bistro - middle of the road food. Small wine list.

Maxwell's 148

Have to agree with all as well. Have been to Maxwell's twice - never a stellar performance in food. Service very good. But it's just off our radar screen - too many odd taste combinations. If they went to Northern Italian - would be a hit!

Spiga Trattoria Italiana Review

Had dinner st Spiga. Had the papardelle with lamb ragu. If a restaurant is going to tout their homemade pasta - it best be good. This was very tough and thick - have had some succulent pappardelle in other local places. The linguine con vongole pasta was good - clam preparation not up to spicy par. The gnocchi were not very good - and in some sort of inedible shell. All in all - will not return - just sub par.

grilled avocado - anyone try it?

I've grilled avocados a number of times to great reviews. Brush cut halves with olive oil and grilled 3-4 minutes. I fill it with salsa for a first course.

Rusty Scuffer, Burlington VT

Stopped here knowing food was okay - but lobsters supposed to be wonderful. My husband sent the first lobster back - dry. Mine was edible - but quite clearly not freshly cooked. It was not hot. Second lobster a bit better. We drove from Boston and chose this spot for their lobster dinner. Big disappointment. There are many other places to go to in Burlington - and we'll be at one of them on our next visit.

Au Cinquieme Peche

Visited this neighborhood bistro on a vist to Montreal due to recommendations on this board. Not disappointed. A complimentary lentil/eggplant caviar spread with wonderful bread. Pork shank surrounding foie gras mousse - perfect. Special sea bream done just right with gnocchi and tomato sauce as a side. Sweet potato gnocchi with baby spinach, asparagus and blue cheese another winning entree.

Our only dinner there - but surely worth a repeat.

Suggestions for north Conway dining please

Try May Kelly's Irish Pub - kids will love the surroundings - and the deck could be open too. Good food, good prices. Just over the railroad tracks heading out north of town - near Delaney's (but don't eat there).

White Mountain Cider Mill

Four of us went for New Year's eve dinner. What a wonderful meal! Had roasted romaine with blue cheese vinaigrette and roasted grapes; duck with pomegranate sauce on a bed of mashed potatoes and fresh green beans; tenderloin with the same sides. We're regulars to the North Conway area and know that this place is a winner. It's located on Rte. 302 in Bartlett. Two former chefs from the Bernerhof Inn own and run the restaurent. Dinner was $200 with wine.

Tomasso Trattoria

Four of us went to Tomasso's last week with mixed results. The rice balls were excellent. The pasta with duck was horrid - the duck was overcooked. The gnocchi were very heavy - I would expect a good hand at this. The lemon tart was left by all three who ordered it. We had the $33 prix fixe dinners - the pork chop and fish stew were good. We'll go back but will not expect a fine dining experience.

Cheese to match pears

A classic Italian meal would end with pears and slices of fresh parmesan.

Restaurant suggestion for Jackson, NH.

Have been dining in the N.Conway/Jackson area for years, and would strongly recommend the 1785 Inn for dining and ambience. They have received many, many awards. The Thompson House Eatery is also good, but not as good as the 1785.

quince, needham

Went to Quince for dinner last night for the first time. Menu not very far reaching and somewhat disappointing. Served wonderful olives, great bread with a tomato basil butter. Steak was not that good. Vegetable terrine very good but perhaps should have had puff pastry rather than the biscuit-like topping. Salads very good. Nice selection of wines.

For the price, better opportunities abound.
