Green Bay eats..`

I think Titletown Brewing is always nice. Converted railroad station downtown. Neat old building, good pub food, great beer, reasonably priced.

I want to enjoy beer, but I don't. Can you help me?

Give me a break. They make plenty of beers that are drinkable and even better than drinkable. It's fashionable in some parts to hate on Boston Beer Co. (Sam Adams) since they're so big. But they make some darn good beers, with Boston Lager being their flagship and a very good, approachable beer. They also make a few atrocious beers, but the good they brew far outweighs the bad.

BeerAdvocate drinkers seem to think they do a fine job. An awful lot of B and B+ grades listed there.

Houlihan's in Lake Geneva, WI

I heard they're only licensed to use the name. Also heard mixed things about the Madison location.

Here's a review that seems to be pretty indicative of what I've heard about it. A big "meh."

Madison--Badger Game Day Boozy Breakfast?

A few years ago we took a game day bus from the Come Back Inn. Decent selection of tap beers and a pretty decent greasy breakfast. Don't know if they still do it.

Milwaukee Brewery Tour (and Beer Bars...)

I agree with this, but Sprecher is a hit or miss tour. IMO - Sprecher has the better beer, but Lakefront is far and away the better tour. The last time I went on the Sprecher tour the tour guide was beyond bad. He had to read everything off a note card, including his favorite beer. It was REALLY awful. Lakefront is a much more informative and fun tour - plus you get to drink beer on the tour. If you can only do one, do Lakefront. If two, then add Sprecher. Miller isn't worth the time.

Summer Beers Are Here!

New Glarus Dancing Man Wheat. Best American brewed wheat beer on the market. Suppose that's no help since they don't distribute out of state. But man alive! - and I don't usually care for wheat beers.

Check out some saisons, there's some good summer drinking.

Madison, WI--Family friendly spots.

I think as a whole Madison is pretty kid friendly (we feel comfortable bringing our 1-year-old just about anywhere). Off the top of my head, The Old Fashioned (Wisconsin supper club influenced) and The Great Dane (brew pub) are both pretty family friendly pub-type places. The Weary Traveler (eclectic pub food) would be another place in the same vein, broadly speaking. Dotty Dumplings Dowry and the Nitty Gritty are popular for burgers.

I, personally, wouldn't feel comfortable taking my youngster into any Madison steakhouses or any of the finer dining places. That's a personal preference out of respect for fellow diners, who don't want to listen to my screaming kid while they eat a meal they paid good money for. But I'm sure just about anywhere can and will accommodate if you're looking for a more upscale meal. Madison's flexible like that.

Maybe someone can suggest a steak place that IS specifically family friendly.

Pre-Game Hangouts around the Bradley Center (Milwaukee)

I second Old German Beer Hall. Eat some sausage and drink some beer.

Major League Beer

That article doesn't even come close to getting the Miller Park beer list correct. They have small beer stands situated in several areas of the park that are dedicated to micros. It's pretty impressive for a ball park.

That and they spell Leinenkugel's wrong.

Mexican in Waukesha County, WI

I haven't eaten at the one in Watertown, but it's the same ownership as the Lake Mills one I hear. If that's the case it should be a solid place for Mexican food. Nothing spectacular, but everything I've tried is good.

San Pedro Cafe in Hudson, Wisconsin

Second on the rasta pasta. I tried recreating it at home, but it wasn't nearly as good as they made it there.

Green Bay Restaurants

I totally agree with Chili John's and somewhat agree with Krolls (overpriced and there are other places in the area that do the butter burger better). Los Banditos though, is generic Mexican food. Is it good generic Mexican food? Yes. But it's pretty whitebread and generic. I'd skip it. If you want Mexican in Green Bay try El Sarape on E. Mason.

I haven't eaten at Sammy's in years, but when I'm visiting Green Bay I'm disappointed if I don't make it over to Jake's for pizza. It's by far my favorite restaurant in Green Bay. By miles.

As for fine dining, I've enjoyed the Black and Tan, but Hinterland is supposed to be in a league of its own.

If you want some local flavor, try a Friday fish fry (everyone has their own favorite, I'm partial to the Settlement).

Chipotle or Qdoba?

Neither are terrible. Are there better options? Sure, but Chipotle and Qdoba aren't bad options. That said, I prefer Chipotle by a wide margin if only for their carnitas, which are better than I've had at some local taquería's.

Wisconsin Folk: what are your favorite places to buy Brats?

Miesfelds http://www.miesfelds.com/ in Sheboygan and Glenn's Market and Catering http://www.glennsmarket.com/index.asp in Watertown are my two favorites.

Daves Bar-b-que?

A little over dramatic maybe? Worse than prison food? Inedible? They wouldn't be in business if that were the case. The food isn't the quality of a local outfit, but it's certainly edible and maybe even not all that bad.

[MSP] Booya--Twin Cities

That would be the correct spelling. I think it's kind of cute that Minnesotans have booyah. If you want the real deal though, you have to drive over to the Brown/Door/Kewaunee county area of Wisconsin, where it originated. Made with chicken, not beef.

The end of civilization is upon us ... Domino's Makes Oreo Cookie Pizza.

I'm none of the above, but it's probably not all that bad.

Madison area supper clubs?

My wife wants steak for her birthday this week and frankly I find the prices at Madison area Steak Houses to be ridiculous. We both enjoy supper clubs for steak, where the steak usually seems to be pretty good and much more reasonably priced.

With us both being relatively new to the area, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good supper club in the Madison area. We were thinking of trying the Pine Knoll in Lake Mills, but if anyone has a favorite they could suggest, I'm open to trying something.
Thanks.

Milwaukee 1st Visit Help

If you're going to the fair then you have to get a cream puff. As for Miller Park, I usually suggest a brat with secret stadium sauce. Nothing mind blowing, but it's the local flavor. The best thing to do at Miller Park (other than the game) is walk around and take in the tailgating scene pre-game.

Milwaukee, WI. Any feedback on Sobelman's for Lunch Please

Skip the Bloody Mary and get a burger. They're great. My brother-in-law is from Queens and all he does is complain about how nothing in the midwest is as good as what's in New York. Took him to Sobelman's and he loved it. It's a darn good burger.

North Dakota help

If you have a car the burgers at the Totten Trail on Highway 83 between Minot and Bismarck are great. My best friend grew up in Cole Harbor, so when we'd head out there for a visit we'd live on Totten Trail burgers for the entirety of the trip. Well, that and cheap beer.

lakefront's new grist, gluten free?

I love Lakefront beer, but I really didn't care for this. If you can't have gluten, I suppose it's better than nothing, but I wouldn't go out of your way to seek it out otherwise.

Crivitz WI

Shaffers is where everyone seems to swear by in Crivitz. Specialty is chicken, I'm not sure if it's fried or broasted, but a lot of people make the drive from Green Bay just for the chicken.

Port Washington, Wis

Looking to take my wife out for a romantic dinner in Port Washington on a Saturday night. Any suggestions? Looking for something well prepared but not stuffy.

Best Brats and ???? in Green Bay

I grew up in GB. People don't "go out" for brats. Yeah, some places serve brats, but people only really go out for brats at picnics and the such. To get a great brat, you go buy some from a good butcher and grill them yourself. We have great sausages in Wisconsin, but not a lot of places specialize in serving them.

Maybe you can have some luck finding some brats at a tailgate party near Lambeau.

Anyway, the cheese curds are where it's at.

Moe's Southwest

It doesn't.

Moe's doesn't have the choices like Chipotle does. They have different burritos you can order, unlike at chipotle where you build your own. The "Homewrecker" was OK, but everything was bland. I like my burritos spicy and I couldn't really get it at Moe's. I'd pass.

Just moved to Green Bay. What's good?

Depends on what you like, I'm a former resident but get back there a lot for visiting family.

For mexican food, I'm partial to El Sarrape on East Mason, near where it intersects with Main St. Most residents suggest Los Banditos, which is good, but not really authentic mexican.

For pizza, Jakes on Main St. is my favorite by far. Kind of a different crust, not really thick or thin, but really good pizza.

A lot of people suggest Krolls for burgers, but Basils II, on some rural road somewhere near Denmark, (look in a phone directory for exact address) serves the exact same burgers at better prices and better portions. I believe the owner of Basils used to work at or was an owner of Krolls or something to that extent. Culvers doesn't make a butter burger. Krolls or Basils do. Huge pats of butter on top of the burger, with butter dripping out when you take a bite. Delicious.

For a Friday fish fry, I like the Settlement on Bay Settlement road. Huge crowds on Fridays, so belly up to the bar for an old fashioned. Just watch it, they really fill 'em up with brandy/whiskey.

Rossi'sItialian Deli on Velp has good authentic italian food stuffs. Great sandwiches.

Black and Tann Grille in DePere and Hinterland Brewery are the places to go for upscale eats. I've never heard a bad word uttered about Hinterland.

Also, if you a sign at a church or whatnot advertising Chicken booyah. Get a bowl. Better yet, bring an ice cream pail and have them fill it up. Local delicacy. Other places do it, but Green Bay does it best. By far. It's basically a chicken stew, cooked over a wood fire. Community groups and churches sell it for fund raisers mostly. Or various people make up a batch get a keg or two and invite their friends and family over for a good time. It's Green Bay culture at its finest and I miss it a lot.

A lot of food snobs decry Green Bay as a bad eating city. It's not Minneapolis or Madison by any stretch. Ethnic food is scarce and quality is below average in most instances. But if you just get out and look, or find someone like minded there are a lot of places in town deserving of your money that you'll enjoy.

Good luck
