Any new cheap eats discoveries around DC?
wow - great to know. will have to try that soon as there are SO few good delivery options on the hill!
MA/Boston food wedding favor idea?
Getting married in Boston this fall and trying to think of a clever favor idea. Necco waffers have been considered but with the pastels they are almost too traditional! Has anyone seen small jars of fluff? any other ideas???
any good rehersal dinner spots near the waterfront?
We are getting married near Post Office Square and need a rehersal dinner spot. Its been a while since I have lived in Boston and with all the new spots (no longer just Anthony's Pier 4!) I am lost. Does anyone have any recommendations for places that do private events?
Best Mac and Cheese in DC?
Amazing classic mac and cheese at Lincoln. That and a punch bowl and I am in heaven
Favorite cold soups, please
I love this spicy yellow pepper soup from fine cooking - basically you roast yellow peppers, cook with onion, a little rosemary, jalapeno and chicken stock, puree and then serve chilled. so good (except roasting them on a hot day!)
Restaurant Suggestion in a Fun Area
If you really want to get out of your comfort zone you can take the metro to Union Station and then a cab to H Street. Ethopic is great and it is definitely a fun area! A little bit still transitioning but there are a series of great bars, H Street Country Club, Little Miss Whiskeys, Smith Commons etc and its unlike anything outside of DC

Weight Watchers Foodies: What are you Cooking? Part 3 [old]
I make a smoothie with the Fiber One vanilla yogurt, a frozen banana and a 1/2 cup of skim milk. The frozen banana makes it nice and thick and its only 2 points! Add a slice of whole wheat toast with some PB and you are only up to 4 points.
food vaccum sealer recommendations?
I finally have enough freezer space to really go to town so want to buy some sort of vaccum sealer system to store leftovers and cuts of meat etc. Anyone have one they love? they hate? Thanks!
any experience with mini loaf pans??
this is SO helpful thank you! I was thinking the exact same thing with the cello bags and pretty ribbon.
kumquats? in DC/NOVA area?
Has anyone seen kumquats around?? I need a whole bunch and Whole Foods in Arlington and both Balcucchis dont have them. Thanks!
any experience with mini loaf pans??
Has anyone ever used those mini paper loaf pans you can find at Sur La Table etc? I wanted to do mini tea breads for a favor for a shower. I have a recipe that would make 2 regular size breads in loaf pans. Obviously I would need to decrease the time but wondering if anyone has done anything similar and if you have any thoughts. Thanks!
Friday night late reservation rec?
So I grew up in Boston but haven't been into the "scene" for a long time now, living in DC. Going to be meeting up with friends around 830 on a Friday and want to get dinner somewhere great, with the option of going out for drinks in the area later. Really wanted to hit Coppa but sounds like the wait will just be too long at that point. Any other suggestions? Only restriction is it cant be seafood (BF is allergic - tragic!). Thanks so much - cant wait to explore "my city" again

lunch on Christmas day?
I think we may end up at Petit Robert - wanted to try and break out of the hotel mold since they all seem to be doing buffet brunches that day! thanks everyone
lunch on Christmas day?
DC chowhound going home for Christmas. Instead of cooking we have decided to go out again this year - last year was Market and it was great. Would love something luxurious and fun - price not really an object. Doesnt seem like much is open and I am so out of the Boston dining scene. Any ideas?? thanks so much
need help with brunch for a bunch
Thank you all so much for the input. I finally asked my boyfriend what he wanted to serve (oops) and he had a major vote for scones so we are doing 2 types of those, the baked french toast, a couple banana breads, a fruit and a green salad per suggestions and the fritattas. And of course because enough is never enough, sea salt and pecan chocolate bark as favors! Happy holidays to all
using fresh instead of dried cranberries in baking
perfect sense! thank you so much - I am always so wary to change anything when baking
using fresh instead of dried cranberries in baking
I was going to make scones and I would rather use fresh cranberries instead of dried. Anything I need to change you think? I am going to dust them with flour per usual but perhaps cut back on the liquid a tad? If it matters I am using the Barefoot Contessa's recipe. Thanks!
need help with brunch for a bunch
ooooooh! I didnt even think about pre making the fritattas! You all are geniuses. Just like a spanish tortilla, cant think of why that didnt occur to me. And I love the idea of a slow cooker with grits. I would love to have a salad to lighten it up. I was worried about finding (or affording) enough fruit for a fruit salad so was thinking a green one. Last year I did endive spears with walnuts and blue cheese but thats too precious for so many people. Does anyone have a good green salad that will hold up with dressing. Maybe something with escarole....
need help with brunch for a bunch
So our holiday brunch went from about 14 people last year to at last count 37! I want to try and make it as painless as possible while also serving great food. So far I have baked french toast, banana bread, muffins and some salads on tap. Booze and other drinks are already handled. I have always done a fritatta but worry that I would have to make several and thats tough to do with only 1 non stick skillet! Does anyone have any other for a crowd egg recipes? Or anything else that I can add to make in advance? The beauty of the french toast is you make it the day before and then just bake off and its easy to multiply - any others like those! I dont want to have to resort to bagels! Thanks all and happy holidays!
Fresh marshmallows in DC?
I think I have seen them at AKAC on 14th street - but they are REALLY easy to make yourself!
Gifts from your kitchen -- what are you giving this year?
I am going to make vanilla extract for my baking friends and The Barefoot Contessa's carmels with sea salt for those who just enjoy sweets!
your best zucchini fritter/zucchini rosti/zucchini patty/zucchini latke/zucchini pancake recipes- what herbs & spices do you like to use?
I like to use a little zatar in my mix - really adds something and people never seem to quite be able to place it
New Trader Joe's in Clarendon?
any more intel on this? this would serious make my week - I hate having to go to the one on Leesburg Pike
Really Good Deal: Trummer's on Main
so good to hear! We were thinking about making the treck out there soon, hit up a vineyard, check out the town and maybe grab a bite at the bar but maybe we will do it on a Sunday instead. Thanks for the report!
uses for speck?
thanks all - its interesting, i was thinking asparagus too. I think I will do an asaparagus, speck, cream sauce for some pasta. hopefully my guniea pig approves!
uses for speck?
My wine club gave out speck this month with our wines. I have only ever had it in a chartucherie plate and wonder if anyone has any interesting thoughts about cooking with it. I suppose I could sub it for bacon or pancetta but does anyone have any better ideas or flavors it would pair nicely with? thanks!
