Blood orange juice in the Scottsdale/Tempe/Chandler area?

They were sampling blood orange juice last weekend at AJ's in Scottsdale. I'd call them and make sure the one closest to you is carrying it.

Oreganos closed?

I never go to that location; however, I passed by and saw the closing soon sign. However, they're actually moving just a bit south into the old SugarDaddy's location (which they are currently remodeling).

Panuchos in the Phx Area?

Hi,

A friend of mine is doing research in Mexico for a couple months. He's really been enjoying panuchos in the Yucatan area. Anyone know if any place offers these turkey and tortilla appetizers in the Phoenix area? Many thanks!

Zankou Chicken in Phoenix?

Morning,

Just back from CA and passed a Zankou place. Years ago I always had chicken from Cafe Istanbul, and it came with a great garlic sauce (and those pickled turnips). I'd contact them first, however, to see if they still serve it. Cafe Istanbul is located on Apache Blvd between Rural and McClintock (on Dorsey, I believe) in Tempe. Good eating!

New Scottsdale Tottie's Asian Fusion (near Lincoln/Scottsdale Road???)

Hi,

Read an article about a redo of the Lincoln Village (southwestish corner of Lincoln and Scottsdale Road) in Scottsdale. They mentioned the Trader Joe's and the Fogo de Chao, as well as the redo they're planning on doing to the complex. They also mentioned that the area includes El Torito, Rancho Pinot and Tottie's Asian Fusion. Does anyone know if a Tottie's opened in this area recently. If so, same menu as their location on Thomas and Hayden?

Many thanks,
Brian

Has anyone been to Luci's Healthy Marketplace (Phx) yet?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone's been to the new Luci's Healthy marketplace at 16th Street and Bethany Home yet.

Thanks,
Brian

Drinks before Pasta Bar(PHX)?

Just an FYI, but I'm fairly certain that the main downtown transit station (Central/Van Buren -- across from ASU) is closer to the Pasta Bar than the Central/Roosevelt station.

Anyone been to ZamZam World Foods Market (Phx)?

Just saw an ad for Zam Zam World Market (located at 40th & McDowell). I believe it's relatively new. Says it also has a restaurant in it (called Z-Grill).

Has anyone been there yet? How does it compare to Lee Lee or Mekong -- in size, amount of product, etc.? I'll check it out this upcoming weekend, but I'd be interested if anyone has been there yet.

North Scottsdale Ice Tango closed!

Too bad, but business definitely dropped with the economy. And so many yogurt places have opened all over the place. I hear their Hilton Village location is doing really well, and they are opening a new place in downtown Scottsdale as well.

Marketsides in Phoenix

I was really unimpressed. Very nice and tidy, but their prepared meal selection was really unimpressive, especially in comparison to F&E and TJs. It's really just a very tidy mini grocery store, albeit they have quite a few items. They do offer homemade pizzas, and they have a small deli. Great idea in the bottom of a high-rise or huge apartment complex, but I think they'll have to tweak their concept to really expand.

Bakery (PHX)

DrewB -- New York West Bakery in Sun City is the closest Back East-style bakery I've come across (it's around 100th Avenue and Grand (I know--far!). But they have 3 or 4 levels of everything in a 20+=foot bakery case. I haven't been there in a while, but they even wrap your selections in pink boxes with string from the ceiling.

Korean food in Phoenix? Hawaiian style groceries?

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name, but there's a Korean restaurant that I've heard good things about across from ASU West (Thunderbird and 43rd Avenue area). Also, a good Vietnamese place there that I have eaten at as well.

It should be interested what types of restaurants, businesses, etc. Mekong Plaza attracts when they open later this year as well.

Where to find Vosges Chocolate in the Valley?

I finally tried the bacon bar a few months ago. . . and was extremely unimpressed. Tasted like beef jerky. But I do like some of their other varieties. You can also find them at Whole Foods. In fact, just last week, I saw the mini bars (including the bacon bar) at the Whole Foods on Tatum and Shea. At least you can try one without spending the $7+ for the larger bar.

Any comments on Red Pearl in San Diego (downtown)?

Hi,

Any comments on Red Pearl in downtown San Diego (Gaslamp)? Good flavors? Or is it more of a PF Changs-type place?

Thanks,
Brian

Any suggestions near the Hyatt Embarcadero

Hi,

Staying at the Hyatt Embarcadero in a few weeks. Can anyone suggest any not-to-miss, San-Francisco-type places nearby.

Also, we'll be arriving late in the evening, so any suggestions for late-night dining in the area as well?

Many thanks,
Brian

Ethnic Gems in Downtown San Diego

Hi,

I'm heading out to San Diego in a couple weeks. Staying downtown for the weekend. Can anyone recommend any inexpensive, ethnic spots in the downtown area. No car, but don't mind walking from Horton Plaza to Seaport Village to the PetCo Field areas--in other words, don't mind walking anywhere in the downtown San Diego area (the aforementioned places are just points of reference for me, not places at which I want--or need--to eat)!

Thanks everyone!
Brian

Egg Foo Young? - Phoenix Area

I think both Best Hong Kong Dining (NW Southern/Dobson) and Totties Shaghai (SW Hayden/Thomas) both have pretty great egg foo yung!

Ice Tango-Scottsdale

I'm a big fan of this place as well. I usually stop by at least once a week. I also really like the twangy (plain) with pomegranate seeds. I'm heading out to California this week and read that there's a Pinkberry about a mile away from where we're staying on Wednesday. I'm definitely going to have to check it out--just for a comparison. Can't imagine it being much better, and it only comes in plain and green tea flavors (ok, so green tea sounds pretty good, too). I'll let everyone know my verdict!!

Javinos Wine Bar Restaurant, Scottsdale

I stopped in on Saturday to grab a menu. They do list a "You Choose Lunch Special" for $7.95 where you pick 2 of 3 items: choose either soup, caesar salad, mixed green salad, or a personal size pizza. The two pizzas I'd try would be the fig & prosciutto and the shrimp serrano. Report back if you give it a try!

Vosges ice cream at Whole Foods in Chandler (AZ)

It's quite good, especially after letting it "warm up" a bit. Strangely, the flavor has licorice characteristics to it (to me anyway).

By the way, they also carry another brand from California that sounds interesting. Flavors included lavender, saffron, etc.

Whole Food Chandler - now open

Hi Ziggylu,

I got chai rice pudding and thai rice pudding with mango. But they also had plain, vanilla, and chocolate. They also had plain and chocolate tapioca as well (which I thought looked a bit dry). Both my rice puddings are pretty tasty, however.

Enjoy!

Vosges ice cream at Whole Foods in Chandler (AZ)

I must be on a frozen dessert kick lately. But since so many people mention Vosges chocolates, and the ever-elusive bacon bar, I thought I'd just bring it to locals' attention that the new Whole Foods in Chandler, AZ carries pints of Vosges' ice cream.

They had the wattleseed, ancho, pandan, and curry/young coconut (which I bought). Pricey, oh yeah!!! But I guess the sale price of $5.99 (regularly $6.99) is cheaper than flying to a Vosges store in LA, Vegas, or Chicago.

Great frozen yogurt in N. Scottsdale!

Hey gang,

I've heard enough from friends in California about Pinkberry that I wanted to add my two cents about a place I just checked out on Friday night called Ice Tango. It just opened in North Scottsdale (Target/Albertson's shopping plaza on Frank Lloyd Wright and the 101).

They have a couple of fruit flavors, but the best is the basic (called "twangy")--very sour yogurt flavor. The guy said it was pretty much the same as the Pinkberry and Red Mango frozen yogurt places. I tried it with pomegranate seeds. Really addictive (guess that's why they call Pinkberry, Crackberry!). The place also serves crepes and is about to serve frozen custard as well.

It will be interesting to hear a comparison from anyone who visits and has had the infamous Pinkberry in LA.

Whole Food Chandler - now open

Stopped in today.

Definitely a nice store. Things that stood out to me--besides the sheer size of the place--are the smoked fish/seafood section, the tapioca/rice pudding bar, and the international foods hot table. As previously mentioned, there are three dining areas: a burger/beer place near the meat areas, a tapas/wine bar, and a sushi/Asian food area. The prepared foods areas are more like the PV store, although obviously much, much larger.
Friendly staff, but clearly new.

Sprouts will most likely not suffer much due to Whole Foods' AJ's-like prices. Definitely worth a visit, however.

Two great Thai curries at Shanghai Palace!!

Thanks for the list of many of the Thai places in town (I know Seth [and his dad] has/have probably hit up most of these places as well.)

As an FYI: I haven't heard anyone mention the new Thai place Tipps 81 yet (and I haven't been there yet myself). I think it opened a month ago on University, halfway between Rural and McClintock. Give us a review if you check it out!

Any Guatemalan food in Phx area?

Hi all,

Anyone know of any places that serve Guatemalan food (or at least a few dishes [i.e., Latin American restaurant]) in the Phoenix metro area?

Thanks!
