Where to buy quality Vanilla Beans in bulk?
I bake from time to time and use vanilla beans often enough but the average bean costs a lot. $5-$8 per bean.
Is there is a good place to buy quality Vanilla beans in bulk from somewhere. Or not in bulk but cheaper than that. Please note that I'm not running a restaurant so I don't want to buy dozens or hundreds of beans :)
Any place in Manhattan, Outer boroughs or Jersey would do.
Valrhona chocolate for baking
Hi
I'm looking for a store where I could buy different varieties (50%, 60%, 70%, etc.) of Valrhona chocolate for baking.
I know Whole Foods sells it in some stores but they sell it in very small quantities and high prices.
Is there some gourmet restaurant supply store where I could buy them in or near Manhattan?
Thanks for your help.

Best cakes in the city
Hi
I want to start a discussion on the best cakes that are available in the city. I didn't come across a discussion on this topic. It doesn't matter what flavor the cake is. No cupcakes please, we can start a seperate thread for that but I'm sure that exists already.
Some of my favorites are:
-Chocolate Malt Cake at Momofuku Milk bar
-Mango Mousse Cake at Bruno's (on La Guardia)
-Goat Cheese Cheescake w/ Rosemary Caramel at Dessert Truck (seasonal)

Pumpkin dessert suggestions
I am looking for pumpkin desserts in and around Manhattan. A couple of my favorite things are Pumpkin Pie icecream at Emack and Bolio on Houston and Pumpkin shaked Milk at Chelsea Market. Do you know of any other restaurants or bakeries where they have some pumpkin flavored dessert? I know the season is over :(
Thanks.
Looking for Invert Sugar
Hi PS,
I am trying to make a chocolate truffle and the recipe comes from a chocolatier. For that I have to use Invert Sugar. Will Lyle's Golden Syrup work for this purpose? Or do I need something more precise since it might change the recipe because of the caramel flavor you mentioned?
Thanks!
Looking for Invert Sugar
Hi,
I am trying to find Invert Sugar to make a dessert but can't find it in super markets (whole foods, etc.).
Does anyone know where I could find this item in Los Angeles or Orange County area?
Thanks.
Looking for Dried California Apricots
Hi,
I'm looking for dried California Apricots in Orange County or LA area. I went Whole Foods but they only had imported Turkish Apricots. Please guide me to a farmers market or some dry fruits store. Thanks in advance.
And besides that are there any specialty dry fruits store in the area?
Chocolate Cake suggestions near Manhattan Beach
Hi,
I recently moved to Manhattan Beach. I'm wondering where I can find a good chocolate cake in the area...whether it be Death by Chocolate, Devil's foodcake, or a simple Chocolate layer cake.
Thanks!

Cleveland late night dinner tonight
Hi there
I'm making a stopover in Cleveland tonight ....coming from NYC. Want to find trendy place to eat around 10pm...maybe something near the water (if there is such a place). Cousine and price doesn't matter. Thanks in advance.
Lunch around Grand Central
Hello
I recently started work on Park Avenue near Grand Central and am not familiar with good eats in the area. I want to find out what places are good for lunch and reasonably priced. Some things that I'd like to consider are:
-Timely service
-Price under $30
-Walking distance
-Delivery sometimes
-Don't want to wait too long
It doesn't really matter what type of cousine it is.
Thanks for your help.
Downtown/Tribeca low key tonight
Hello
I want to go out tonight in the downtown/tribeca area for a low key dinner. It'll be two of us. Last month I went to Max's in Tribeca, which I enjoyed, to give you an idea of want I want to do. Cousine doesn't matter but I want to keep the check under $80 (excluding drinks and tip). Thanks for your help!
Best Creme Brulee
I recently had a very good chocolate creme brulee at Ritz Carlton Battery park. Although it was delicious I'm quite certain that that is not the best that the city has to offer. Could you please suggest where could I find an exceptional creme brulee (traditional or chocolate)?
Thanks.
Pomegranates desserts/chocolates??
I wanted to get a dessert or some kind of chocolates with pomegranates for valentine's day. Is there such a dessert? If so, where can I find it? Thanks in advance.
Visiting CA hound (ethnic food)
For Authentic German food go to Zum Schneider on 7th St and Ave B.
Visiting CA hound (ethnic food)
For a great gyro to go the stand on 53rd St and 6th Ave. There are two stand on either side of 6th Ave, both are owned by the same guy and have the same food. For $6 you'll get an exceptional gyro platter. Go for the lamb with rice.
Cevabdzinica Sarajevo is a very good place for Bosnian food. Go for the Cevapi (lamb/beef sausages in a thick homemmade bread). I doubt you'll find many places like this out West. This place is located in Astoria. Take the Subway to Steinway St in Queens.
If you like meat then I would suggest Pakistani instead of Indian restaurants. For that Kabab King in Jackson Heights is very authentic. Go for the Bihari Kabab (thinly sliced spicy steaks). Subway to Roosevelt Ave/Jackson Heights Station.
Upscale Moroccan/French Restaurant?
Hello
I'm looking for an upscale Moroccan restaurant in Manhattan. Any suggestion? I wouldn't mind French/North African combination either.
Thanks in advance.
Sushi for date
Hi
I want to go to a sushi place for a date. Can you please recommend a place which would cover dinner for both of us around $150 (drinks not included)? Nothing over the top because it's the first date, but some place which has a good ambiance and good sushi. Any part of Manhattan would do. Thanks.
Restaurants everyone loves--except you
Although it's not a proper restaurant but Mamoun's is famous for its falafels. I've given it a try 3 times and each time been disappointed. Maybe it's an acquired taste, but I have definitely had better falafels elsewhere. And the gyro wrap is absolutely aweful there.
Dessert/Sweets suggestion for Lactose intolerant.
Hello
I am going to a friend's place after a long time and want to take a sweet dessert for her new apartment. She is lactose intolerant. I would like to take a cake but considering she is very sensitive to dairy that's going to be hard. Could you please suggest a place where I could find a pie or a cake which is 100% dairy free? Price doesn't matter.
Thanks.
Something fun? Something Cheap? Something unique? Tonight.
Any cuisine. But nothing from the street carts.
Something fun? Something Cheap? Something unique? Tonight.
Hello
I have a small group of friends going out for dinner tonight in Manhattan. 3-4 people in total. Most of the times we go to upscale places. But tonight we want to try some place that's cheap, unique and fun. We will limit ourselves to $30 or less per person. Can you reccommend a good place for us tonight? Oh! We do like our food and rate it, so this place should live up to certain standards. Location doesn't matter; anywhere in Manhattan.
Thanks.
Baloch Sajji in Metro Area
Is there a place where a proper Sajji is made in NYC metro area?
Kabab King -- the delightful chaos of Ramadan
Kabab King is one of the most authentic Pakistani restaurants in the US. Having said that, I would only stick with the kababs here. The currys and veges do not live up to the expectations.
Few reccommendations:
-Bihari Kabab (thinly sliced spicy beef steaks) - that's their best seller
-Gola Kabab (beef kabab similar to turkish kafta, but spicy)
-Haleem is great
-Chicken Boti (This is Pakistani bbq chicken)
Always try the Raita (yogurt sauce) with any kabab to simmer down the spices.
Best Brownies in America
I have searched for quality brownies (without nuts) for some time now. In my quest for best brownie I have found a few that have become my favorites; Recchiuti confections in San Francisco, Fat Witch in New York City etc. But my search is not over yet.
Where do you think I can find a brownie that will make me want to visit the actual shop? A fudge brownie?
Thanks.
Best Grocery Stores in Manhattan
Looking for the best grocery store in Manhattan for gourmet foods. I'm looking for something unique where you can get ingredients etc. from around the world. Please don't mention Whole Foods, Pathmark, etc. Thank you!
