Anyone been to Hot & Hot lately?

How was it? It's been a while since my wife and I took some friends. Little embarrasing because they were out of town guests and we didn't have a very good experience. Some other friends want to go and I'd like to get some current reviews/feedback. I know about the recent James Beard recogniton. However, a recurring comment in the past was that Hastings spent too much time out of Hot & Hot. I suspect that may have been the problem when I went before. Willing to give it another shot. Any comments would be appreciated.

Steak & Italian recs near Fairmont Hotel

Will be in town for three nights next week. Looking for Italian and Steakhouse recommendations in the Fairmont Hotel vicinity. Researched threads and they seem a little dated. One night I plan to get pizza at either Bacino's or Pizano's. Trying to fill in the other two. I realize steak in Chicago is like pizza, many opinions. Some additional info to help with recs. Looking for "red sauce" Italian. Good food, nice atmosphere, unpretentious is fine. Trying to find something within a reasonable cab ride from hotel. Prefer that the steak house has a track record with the poster. Hoping the rec will be based on several visits. Not concerned with atmosphere so much as food quality. Any assistance is appreciated on what I know can be an opinionated topic. Hoping that the limited radius from hotel helps(?).

Frozen Pizza Dough Balls. Tips?

Noticed in my local Sam's you can buy these by the case. Anyone out there that has tried these or something similar. What were the results? Any tricks or tips in using them?

Savannah chowhounds--send me to your faves

Sorry to hear about Elizabeth's. Have been several times when in town. Have not been in a few years. What happened?

Recommendations in Tucson

Will be entertaining clients in early May. Not looking for high-end, upscale. Something that you can dress casually for and has good food, decent wine list, etc. Open to all types of food.

One night in Birmingham

Have to second pinotboy's slipping comment on Hot and Hot. We took some out of town visitors last Friday. Not a good night. Heavy salt for most dishes. Quail appetizer and pork trio dried out. My shrimp dish (not with grits) was bland. Pasta dish was rated good. Overall, food was average that night. A shame, because we wanted to show it off to our guests. Service was stellar and atmosphere was great though.

Christmas Dinner in Savannah?

My two cents: Elizabeth on 37th fits the bill. Located in an old home. Excellent food and attentive service. Creative menu with local influences. Scroll through menu, etc. on link to see if it interests you. Have been several times and never been disappointed. Other members of family have been and love it too.

ATL - Seasons 52 Review?

Have been to the one in Buckhead three times and the one in Perimeter once. The funny thing is that I don't live in ATL. A local in Buckhead turned me on to it. Every time was very good. Great, fresh ingredients that were well prepared in a very comfortable atmosphere. Sat in the bar area twice. Booths are very cozy. Went with a big group once and everyone loved it. Good drinks, decent wine list and you leave satisfied and not stuffed. Desserts were good too. I recommend it highly. Worth a try in my opinion. Give it a shot and let us know.

Absolute Best Risotto You Will EVER Eat: Toasted Pistachio Gorgonzola Dolce

I made this yesterday and duplicated the recipe list EXACTLY as Joe H describes. It was absolutely the richest, most decadent dish. Everyone loved it. Kudos to you Joe. There were only six of us, so there are plenty of leftovers. We are already looking forward to round two. And yes, the recipe sounds obsessive-compulsive, but the results are well worth it.

Other real good choices are Cosmo's and Tin Top if you're in the area. Locals and those "in the know" go.

Best Steak in Birmingham?

Have been to Ruth's Chris 6 times. Either business meals, gift cards or my dime. Have to say;they are not good. It may just be this one as I have heard people rave about others. Sub-par steaks, bland sides and distracted service.
Have been to Flemings several times. Have always been pleased. Good meat, cooked to order. Good all-around experience. Have been to Shula's several times also. Good steak, but not spectacular. In fairness to Shula's, two times were wine dinners with steak as one of the courses. That probably was not showing their best.

Sorry to hear about Plaza III. Copper Grill had a decent steak, although three of the 5 times I went I ordered the "Tomahawk" which was not on the menu. Large end of the prime rib, frenched to resemble a tomahawk. Aged 6 weeks. An odd item that came from their meat purveyor on a semi regular basis.

I have to agree with you about a steak at home. I do a great one too.

Charleston & Savannah Restaurant recommendations

Second the rec for Elizabeth's on 37th. Have eaten there numerous times. Great food and excellent service. Celebrated my Mom's birthday one year. Ate upstairs in the old living area that Elizabeth and her family occupied at one time. It was a special reservation. Had it to ourselves. Great time.

Funky Salad Recipe??

I've been meaning to send you a note about this recipe. Gave it a whirl and it was a big hit. Unfortunately, I had to use canned serrano. Added two since they weren't as hot as fresh. Very good though. Thanks.

Wow! I was just describing Eastern Shore Kiwanis BBQ Chicken to my wife who is from Alabama. One of my favorite childhood memories/tastes. We are headed to Bethany Beach for a week in August. Hope to get some. Anyone know the recipe for their baste?

My schedule only allowed one "free" night. Several of us escaped the Marriott and went the low key route. Ate at Westmont Brat House. Food was great and ate out on the patio. Beer and brats!!! Thanks for the tip.

Moving to Birmingham, AL and need lots of advice (long)

Trust me, reports are good. Although I have lived here for some time; my work travel doesn't allow me the time to explore the area. Having someone with fresh eyes (and tastebuds!) is great. Keep them coming!

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)? [old]

SVP with a International Real Estate firm. Love to cook and eat. Not into food snobbery; however do appreciate good food and wine. Worked in food service in HS and college. Can appreciate regional and ethnic cuisines. Willing to try anything. Have been a CH'er for 6 months now. Love it. CH has expanded my tastes and experiences dramatically. Great resource when I travel, which is frequnetly.
