Hokkaido Seafood on Rte 7 at Bailey's Crossroads is open!
A lot of the entries on dim sum in the DC area seem to be dated. I live in Annapolis and like Asian Court in Ellicott City. I used to love Lucky 3 during my forays into NOVA. Any thoughts? I need me some har gow.
Hokkaido Seafood on Rte 7 at Bailey's Crossroads is open!
While cruising the Bailey's Crossroads area for some dim sum, and still lamenting the closing of Lucky 3, I stumbled upon Hokkaido. What the hell, says I, I'll give it a shot.
They definitely get points for nice decor and a huge variety of offerings. Despite a lot of familiar food at the various buffet tables (did someone say "General Tso's Chicken?"), it was all definitely fresh and reasonably tasty. As noted above, not a lot in the way of dim sum, which is what I was really craving that day, so perhaps my review is tainted by that.
I suspect I'll head back there in a couple months and see how things evolve. Decent food, good service, good price ... but give me more dumplings, dammit!

Beer-Brined Deep-Fried Turkey
so I got an e-mail from Harpoon Brewery, and they're putting on a charity benefit barbecue in Boston. One of the featured dishes is deep-fried turkey brined in Harpoon beer.
Boston is a bit of a hike for me,, but the idea sounds good. Does anyone have any recipes for such a bird?
Afghan Kebab on Old Keene Mill in Springfield, VA
While you're praising Springfield eateries, don't forget Osaka Japanese, on that remote strip-mall section of Springfield Mall, behind Firestone. Good sushi, very attentive staff, and they remember you if you eat there more than once or twice. I'm always made to feel right at home.
The Thai place in that same strip mall isn't bad either. Not great (Thai Pilin in Tyson's Corner is my favorite), but it's not bad at all.
Back to the original post, I really enjoy the Kabul Kabob's lunch buffet. They do amazing things with vegetables there, especially eggplant.

BTW ... what's your favorite dim sum place in the DC area?

Amazing how I find myself agreeing with all sides in this thread. Yeah, it's got all the negatives of buffet-style food, and yeah, you'll walk out feeling heavy and bloated if you gorge yourself. But it was tough to beat the price ... as one poster said, for a few bucks extra, it sure beats McDonalds. I never had problems with rude staff there, they were always as attentive as the customer load allowed.
That said ... I tried going there for lunch last week, and saw that it's closed. Anyone know what happened?
