Y & Y Vietnamese Deli on Clement

Yes, I live a couple of blocks away and go there often. The sandwiches are very good (although I've only had the bbq pork because I love that one) and you can't beat the price. And, yes, the bread is delicious and is probably local Bakers of Paris. A few months ago I drove over to Saigon in the Tenderloin because I heard their banh mi was the best, but I think Y & Y is equally as good.

Best Veal (Picatta, Marsala, Parmagina, etc) in San Francisco/North Marin

Try Marcello's on Taraval in the Parkside/Sunset District. Really good veal dishes there.

Millbrae Furniture in Millbrae has good service and very good prices, especially on GE brands.

Almond croissant taste test

I went to Boulangerie this morning to treat myself to an almond croissant, which I think is the best. But when I got there their cheese danish looked stunning. I'd never had theirs and got one of those instead. Wow. Yum. Nicely baked, almost crunchy, and not too sweet, custardy filling.

In search of pizza dough on a Monday in San Francisco. Ideas?

I understand lots of pizzerias will sell some of their dough. I know that Giorgio's in the inner Richmond (on Clement) does.

Sushi in the Avenues?

The little neighborhood spot that I adore is Tanuki at 6th and California. Traditional, good prices, warm service.

Shopping at Ferry Plaza on $3 a day … and other observations – bombolini?

Boy, I love the Ferry Building but seeing those prices made me happy I went to the Western Addition Farmer's Market this morning. It's small and not all the vendors are organic, but there's plenty of parking and what a nice vibe, with good music and no pretense. Big bag of squash blossoms for $1.

best (lower cost) vietnamese in/around SF?

I second Le Vie on Geary. Everything I've had there has been delicious.

Three Tres Leches Cakes

Last night I had the Tres Leches at Lo Cubano In Laurel Village and it was moist but, yes, very sweet. They said they get it from Sweet Things in Cal-Mart down the block.

Who makes great Italian Sausage?

My vote is for Molinari's (much better than TJs) although I haven't tried a lot of the other ones listed above. Andronico's in the inner Sunset carries Molinari's if you can't get to North Beach.

Non-touristy restaurants in Monterey?

Monterey Fish House on Del Monte Ave. It's well-known and popular, but full of locals. Excellent fish and seafood.

John Campbell's Irish Bakery

The brown bread is delicious! It's a little pricey at $5 but it's worth it. What a nice addition to the Richmond.

Victoria Pastry

The Victoria Pastry shop owners recently took over the ownership of Stella Pastry on Columbus and are promising to continue baking Stella's traditional Sacrapantina, which is by far my favorite cake.

Waffles for brunch in SF?

That funky old diner It's Tops at Market and Octavia uses a waffle iron from the 1950s and their waffles are good. It's a fun place, too.

Fresh English peas?

Iacopi's at the Ferry Plaza farmer's market or Andreotti farms (at CSM, I believe)...the HMB English sweet peas are the best!

where to buy the best prosciutto?

Does anyone know anyplace that sells Tuscan prosciutto, less sweet and more salty than San Daniele and Parma? I'd love to find some around here. I've looked in all the obvious places, AG Ferrari, Lucca, etc.

Best Italian Resturants in SF

Haven't heard much about Capannina until now and they don't have much on their Web site. Could someone provide some information about the place and the menu/style of food? thanks.

fyi, I think out-of-towners enjoy Antica Trattoria in particular because of its location on lower Russian Hill and that's the place I often recommend to people coming from afar for Italian.

ordering strategy at Perbacco?

My suggestion is to do as you're planning, ie split appetizers, pasta and, also, desserts. For example, order two servings of the agnolotti for four people. Everyone orders their own main course. The portions aren't huge there.

It's St Joseph's Day (3/19) - get your Italian donuts

Anyone have frittelle di riso for St. Joseph's Day? That's what my mom would make on March 19. She was from the Lucca area. They are deep fried rice fritters, really delicious when hot.

St. Joseph's Day - March 19

Anybody make rice fritters for March 19? My mother was from the Lucca area and she made rice fritters (frittelle) for St. Joseph's day. The rice was cooked in milk and little grated orange and liqueur was added. Then it drained for several hours before being shaped in little fritters and deep fried. Sprinkled with powdered sugar, it was a once-a-year treat.

What's in the old Cala at Geary & 27th Ave?

Anyone know what's happening with the closed-down Albertson's near that old Cala in the outer Richmond? There was a rumor about a Mollie Stone's.

I'd like to second Antica Trattoria. I think it's the best Italian here for the quality of food, service and price.

The Village Market's original location is in the inner Richmond and it still is doing well, at 8th and California. Same items, but organic veggies and fruit, too.

Best $3.50 Chinese lunch on Clement

I like the $3.50 (or is it $3.75) lunch at Taiwan because it is a sit-down lunch with table service in a little nicer atmosphere than most of the places on Clement. Not only do you get the main dish (about a dozen choices) but you also get a cup of hot and sour soup and some slices of oranges for dessert.

Your Favorite Korean places in SF?

There's a relatively new Korean place on Geary between 22nd and 23rd (about four doors west of Le Vie) that was wonderful when I ate there several months ago. I can't remember the name, though.
