German Restaurants in NJ

I'm the original poster. My 85-year-old mother does not want to travel so far to get good German food, so we haven' t been to any of your wonderful recommendatons. I doubt anything will open up in Middlesex/Monmouth County, so thank you all. Sigh...

I was born in Bavaria, so it would be beef rouladen, sauerbraten, pork anything, red cabbage, sauerkraut, dumplings of any kind PLUS strudels and other Bavarian/Austrian desserts.

German Restaurants in NJ

After watching an episode of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I watched a German chef prepare a fabulous traditional German Bavarian dinner. I checked for German restaurants here and found only two: Black Forest up north and Schnitzel-something down south. Is that IT??

Need Restaurant Recs Between Hamilton and Howell/Freehold

Taverna Ouzo is in my neighborhood. If you're going on a Friday night, they are beginning LIVE GREEK music this Friday. I plan to go, but will call in advance to be sure. It's a perfect "party-type" restaurant for a group of 10 or less. OPA!!

New GREEK Restaurant coming to Applegarth Road, Monroe

Today was Mom's birthday and she wanted Greek food, so off to Taverna Ouzo. Service was very friendly and welcoming, a plus and definitely better than Pithari in HP. Food portions were huge, easily serving two at lunch. Warm grilled pta slices were served with olive oil dip. Four olives in the oil were excellent. Our appetizer platter had stuffed grape leaves, zucchini balls, kiftedes, fava beans, tiropites and spanakopita. Mom ordered the Lamb Shanks with Orzo. It was a generous portion served in a copper pan. It looked like it came off the stove and onto the table!
I had the lunch special Gyro with three kinds of meat, including lamb. HUGE portion with a 1/2 cup of tsatziki sauce to keep it moist. The accompanying Greek salad was also enough for two. (For 9.95, that lunch was a bargain). I took half the Gyro home.

For dessert, we shared a Greek custard cake with some superb coffee. The cake was fresh, not too sweet, but moist and heavenly. There was plenty for the three of us to share. I have some Greek background and this place just rocked with flavor and atmosphere. Wished the music were louder, though. The owner came to check on tables often for satisfaction and he got a huge thumbs up from us. I wonder why the dining room wasn't full on a weekday lunch, but hopefully this will get the word out on an excellent addition to Monroe's restaurant choices.

I've driven by and the last few weekends, the lot has been packed. They seem to be very busy on weekend nights, but whether customers will return is the question. I haven't had the time to enjoy a leisurely meal there yet, but hope to do that very soon. They still haven't had a Grand Opening, so I may wait until then. I wasn't all that fond of Pithari in Highland Park, but am giving this location a try with an open mind.

Re-opening for O'Connor's/Stage House Tavern in Somerset?

I loved Ted's answer. What a coincidence to have "Ted" answer Ted's question! BTW, Luchento's on Route 33 took many, many, many months for renovations. It seemed endless, but finally they opened, so Stage House may actually open, too! I guess the Salad Bar is over. [sigh]

Nice pics, RGR. It's in my neighborhood and I definitely want to head over there based not only on the reviews of the above posters, but ON YOUR FABULOUS PHOTOS!! Thanks for making me hungry, although I just had dinner. LOL

Bagels in East Windsor

To Nursemegg...I stopped into this location today at 9 AM. They only had plain, salt and cinnamon bagels. The owner/manager did not care at all about our business. I asked if the sesame bagels will be ready soon and he said, "I don't know...maybe 10:00, I don't know." I decided to leave and go back to my local place, Bagel Bazaar, on Applegarth. The location in Hightstown was dirty, unorganized, run down and customer service was extinct. The bagel you got may have been a good one, but I needed more than just A good bagel. Have you tried many varieties? Was your experience different?

This is like Voltron ... Red Lobster and Olive Garden join forces!

In this area of NJ, we have Bonefish Grill and Carabbas sharing a kitchen with totally different menus. It seems to work. I've been to both and don't see an overlay of menu items. I believe the desserts were overlapping, but that's fine with me.

They have the beginnings of a website and this is interesting. Can anyone decipher the "code?"

Finally, the former EUROPA restaurant is being renovated and the new restaurant name:

TAVERNA OUZO (sounds Greek to me)

I can't wait until it opens. The location is off the main drag for most people, but not for the thousands of residents in the adult communities here. Hopefully they will be as good as the Greek restaurant in Hazlet (forgot the name). I am wishing them much luck here as I could walk there and love Greek/Mediterranean foods.

Lobster Shanty in Hightstown closing and reopening as....

... Jack Baker's American Bar and Grill Restaurant

<http://www.hightstownlobstershanty.com/>

Hope the new one is good or better than the 'ol Lobster Shanty. Website says to check back in July 2010. That makes two new restaurants on Route 33.

Do you have a favorite cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory?

I like the very simple Vanilla Bean Cheesecake. All the other flavors sort of cover up the original flavor.

Good eats in Bensalem, PA??

Now that the casino is open, what would be a good restaurant? (Italian preferred, but Chinese would work, too). I'm talking about the "Street" Street area.

New Brunswick (Rutgers vicinity) must eats for visitors

steakrules, what is "black and blue?" I like Arthur's signature steak, too. The changes at the restaurant include a different recipe for their former "signature Onion Soup." Don't like as much as their original.

New Year's Eve

We're heading over to the Crowne Plaza in Monroe on Applegarth (Rt 32). They have a buffet with items we enjoy: Grilled Salmon, Prime Rib, Mushroom Ravioli, and the standards. Live music, open bar and dancing!

Who has the best convenience store coffee/hot chocolate/food selection?

I agreee that Wawa has a really good selection of coffees, including Peruvian and Columbian blends. They also offer Light Cream, which is a step up from the half-and-half. Coffees in my area of NJ are always fresh and good...VERY reasonable, too.

IHOP: Swedish pancakes fantastic

Absolutely my favorite at IHOP. My German Mom makes Pfannkuchen that taste like the crepes at IHOP. The lingonberry sauce and butter make it Swedish and they are oh so good, especially when served hot with a good cup of coffee.

I'm craving them right now.

Cheesecake Factory..I am being forced to go

I went yesterday. Their organic field greens salad with house dressing is so delicious. I had it with a chicken salad sandwich, also good. What I no longer like at CF is that the whipped cream they serve along with their desserts is no longer REAL cream. It tastes like a bad version of Reddiwip with chemicals and more air. I LOVE real fresh whipped cream and they had it two months ago. Actually, I only eat the cream and save the cheesecake for my daughter! Now I won't bother ordering it. I also don't understand why they serve milk with their coffee. It only turns the coffee gray and cools it. No flavor there. I've written them about both these items. If they don't use an authentic whipped cream and either half and half or light cream for coffee, then it's not somewhere to go for "coffee and dessert," which we've done often.

Friends of ours want to meet for dinner at this restaurant in the mountains. I can't find any information on this board. Has anyone been? What would be good to order that is not seafood?

Have you ever successfully recreated a fast food or chain food item at home?

Yes, it is. I must admit it is a lot of waiting, roasting the garlic and all, but soooo.... worth it! ( I did once make it with fresh unroasted garlic and it was still very good, but not quite the same. If you have the time, make the original recipe. )

Have you ever successfully recreated a fast food or chain food item at home?

I've made the TGI Friday's Jack Daniels glaze/sauce and it is delicious, although it has a lengthy ingedient list and takes hours to simmer down. I got the recipe from Top Secret Recipes.

I also made the KFC Coleslaw with low-fat mayo and it tasted like I remembered it. Got to chop the cabbage, not slice it.

Hunterdon/Somerset/Mercer Source for cream that is not ultra pasteurized?

I purchase half and half at Wawa that is only pasteurized, not ultra. It tastes way better than ultras. I believe their heavy cream is also NOT ultra-pasteurized, just pasteurized. I'll have to look again.

Shore in Delray Beach

I have not been to this restaurant, but I read that the jazz/Latin guitarist who played at Caffe Luna Rosa next door is moving over to the Shore Restaurant. That should make the ambiance even nicer. Next visit to Delray, I'm trying out the Shore.

Fun meal for a college student in New Brunswick?

I second Old Man Rafferty's (all-American), then recommend Harvest Moon, a brewery across the street from OMR. Both reasonably priced.

If you want to get into $25 plus pp, you can do Soho (American Fusion cuisine) on George St, kind of elegant but still mainstream.
