Mr. Fish and chips or Chef John's fish and chips?

Chef John's for me, although I haven't been in awhile. Chef John works the deep fryer with precision of a surgeon...seriously. You can watch him from the counter, he's very meticulous!

Greetings San Diego chowhound!

Great post!

"Casa Sol y Mar is in Del Mar and is probably every tourists idealic vision of Mexico and Mexican food"

That's why I suggested it to someone who hated Topolobampo! Not my cup of tea but others love it.

Greetings San Diego chowhound!

For a "niiice" mexican place, maybe Casa Sol y Mar in Del Mar Highlands shopping center, which is very close to the Grand. For breakfast, Snooze or French Champagne Bakery in the same shopping center. It's hard to recommend someone staying at the Grand Del Mar to go to a shopping plaza for a meal but it's close by and for what you say she's looking for, it would work.

San Diego's most under appreciated cuisine type imo

I tend to recommend as well as take first-timers of filipino food to Manila Sunset (National City and Mira Mesa). Where it's not a sit down restaurant per se (you order at the counter and they call you when the order is ready, the presentation of the food is much "nicer" than your typical San Diego cafeteria style restaurant (called point-point or in tagalog, turo-turo...as in point what you want) and the food tends to be "safer". They are known for their pancit malabon, a rice noodle dish with a shrimp-based sauce topped with sliced eggs, chicharrones and green onions, as well as their bibingka, a dessert baked rice cake, cooked to order that is really good. I tend to get these two items as well as daing na bangus and eggs, my favorite filipino breakfast. It is a vinegar/garlic marinated fish, fried and served with rice and fried eggs.

I haven't tried everything there but one thing I do not care for is their fried lumpia. Totally forgettable.

San Diego's most under appreciated cuisine type imo

I wholeheartedly agree....but I am a bit biased being Filipino! Andrew Zimmern said a year or two back that filipino food would be the next big thing in food. I'm hoping that he's right. There is so much to be appreciated.

A number of years ago I went to a restaurant in NYC called Cendrillon that was very nice. It was an actual, nice, sit-down restaurant. I do know that it closed years ago but opened in a new location and a new name called Purple Yam. I have not been there so can't comment on the food but the website looks interesting ;)

Tacos El Panson - Carnitas Torta!

Just had a really, really good carnitas torta from Tacos El Panson in City Heights. I don't see this place mentioned much but it's my go-to taco shop right now. The bread was nicely griddled so it was soft and crunchy at the same time. The crunchy, tender, rich and flavorful carnitas was dressed with chopped lettuce, a little avocado, a little tomato, refried beans with some of the beans still whole, all then topped with one of their salsas...yum! Just thought I'd share....

San Diego Best/Worst Neighborhoods for Restaurants

I have once but only for a beer and a small bite but will definitely go again to try the menu. It definitely has potential. It's nice having an "american" restaurant in the hood too. I mean, there is only so much ethnic food one can take! ;)

Summer fun places..

Love this post and all your places are on my list too. One or two times a summer while cruising on my bike on the board walk I will hit Lahaina's for the pure craziness of it all.

Oysters in San Diego

Oceanaire was my go to for oysters after work. That's great to know about $1 oysters on Sunday! I'm not a huge fan of the room, dark and no windows but I will definitely go on Sunday.

Oysters in San Diego

I love going to the bar at the Fish Market. Actually I love eating at any bar, oyster or not.

Last Thursday we went to PB Fish shop for their $1 oyster happy hour. Sat outside and enjoyed the 6 or 7 varieties of oysters. Totally different vibe but fun nonetheless.

Oysters in San Diego

I've been on an oyster binge lately and with what seems like a number of new oyster bars popping up, I was wondering if I am missing any places to go. Any suggestions? Last week we went to Fish Public and tried a sampling of items including oysters. The Fanny Bay's were nice but at $3/oyster, way too pricey.

Best fish tacos and cheap oysters?

Pacific Beach Fish Shop has $1 oyster night on Thursdays but that doesn't help you out next weekend.

January 2013 Dish of the Month - SOUP

Last night after returning from a week of skiing in Mammoth, we were needing some hearty asian goodness and visited Convoy Tofu House. I ordered my usual kimchee and tuna stew. The side dishes were passable, kim chee, boiled bean sprouts, boiled spinach, sweet pickled cucumber, sweet soy potatoes, and one more which I don't remember. Then came what we were waiting for, the fiery red, bubbling caldron of tofu stew and a side of rice. It was spicy, hearty and everything that I was craving. I usually eat this by scooping up a little rice with my spoon and then dipping it in the stew the get a little bit of rice and tofu in one bite....you definitely can't get this in Mammoth!

Best SD doughnut / donut ?

Panaderia su pan on El Cajon Blvd. The simple glazed donuts and donut holes are fantastic! My son gets the chocolate bars but I can't get passed the glazed. We discovered the donuts here upon trying all the panaderias in the 'hood. It's great for panaderia items too

Ahi Source?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I buy my grilling salmon from Costco and it didn't occur to me to get ahi there!
As for poke recipes, it depends on my mood. A few weeks ago I bought fresh ogo from the Carlsbad Aquafarm stand at the Little Italy Farmer's Market so that day it was only ahi, ogo, hawaiian red salt and a touch of sesame oil. Super simple but so good when everything is fresh!

Ahi Source?

I am planning on making a large serving of ahi poke this coming weekend for a party and was wondering if anyone had a source where it was good quality but will not break the bank. I understand you get what you pay for and should not skimp on raw fish...I just wanted to know if anyone had something new.
Thanks

Best Philippine restaurants?

I would add Conchings to this list along side Tita's and Manila Sunset for their nice presentation (relative to the other "point-point" places) but smaller portions.
