Dog friendly outdoor dining

The Lobster Shanty in Salem is very dog-friendly and even has a doggie menu. Fun place, great people watching and very low key.

Teresa's of Middleton

I don't think anyone said you weren't entitled to your opinion. Go to Teresa's and enjoy. But while you're there, ask to speak to the manager and ask about the situation and why he/she couldn't be bothered to take 3 minutes and send an earnest response to a disgrunteld customer who had a bad experience and took the time to inform them of the same.

Teresa's of Middleton

Good for you Marilu---I have enjoyed the place a couple of times, but after your posts I will not go in there again. And I will help you by telling people about your experience.

January Openings and Closings

Heard on pretty good authority that Dandelion Green in Burlington is closing soon.

Best / Favorite 5 restaurants on North Shore??

Had some awesome pizza at Soma in Beverly and it was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. Hand-tossed sourdough crust and fresh toppings. My wife wanted the "Greek Pizza" with olives, feta, spinach etc, It was terrific. I want to go back and get a simple cheese or pepperoni pizza. Great beer selection and interesting menu.

Good options in Beverly?

Second tha motion for Super Chicken. PLEASE don't let the name fool you. It's as close to home cooking around. They have fabulous special every day (roast lamb on Tuesday is my favorite), like meatloaf, roast pork. baked haddock etc. Go hungry and like it was grammy's house on a Sunday afternoon. A few tables, not much atmosphere, but get it to go and eat al fresco this summer somewhere near the water (across the street from Cummings Center is a nice little path with benches, etc. just next the the Macdonalds. Welcome to the Garden City!!!!

Best / Favorite 5 restaurants on North Shore??

Had brunch at Tryst on Sunday. All I can say is you have never had corned beef hash and eggs unless you have had it at Tryst. And (I know it's hard to believe, and I fought it for at least 6 months) the pancakes are the BEST I have ever had. The hash was large chunks of corned beef with potatoes and roasted red peppers and onions. Whole grain toast and orange quarters finished the dish. Warning, cash only, so go to the ATM before you sit down. It's worth it.

The Clam Box, Woodman's or Farnham's - which one to choose?

Can't say enough about Dube's in Salem. Best fried food around, great prices, chowder is awesome and the local vibe is the best. They do a phenomenal baked schrod too!!

April openings and closings

What???? Eddy's closed?? When and what happened???

Cocktails that taste like food?

I've always thought that the creamy limoncello tasted like my grandmother's lemon chiffon pie!!

Who still serves Baked Alaska???

My wife has never tried it and I couldn't quite describe it to her since it's been so long since I've had it. Is it available anywhere (preferably north of Boston)? Thanks in advance.

Coming from Barbara Lynch - Menton

Right on MC S JB!

Just Curious - Turkey Prices Paid

20 pound Shady Brook frozen turkey from Stop & Shop for $.47/pound and it came out just perfectly with plenty of moisture and plenty of flavor. Right with you MeffaBabe, cheese and cracker plate cost more than the turkey!!!!!!!

Seven days in Boston and Salem

In Salem, don't miss The Grapevine and 62 on Wharf for upscale, and the Old Spot, Witch's Brew and In a Pig's Eye for more casual/pub style food.

Prezza or Mama Maria

Prezza--try the baked stuffed figs.

9/15/09 Tryst, Beverly; NOW You’re Talkin’ the Best !

In the same vein, Celito Lindo on Cabot is the best / most authentic Mexican food around; What;s Brewin' (also on Cabot) for coffee and real breakfast sandwiches; and believe it or not, Super Chicken on Rantoul Street has some of the best comfort food I've had in years (meatloaf / roast lamb / roast pork/ rotisserie chicken / ribs / etc.) Don't be put off by the name. And Harry's 240 on Rantoul is a nice local bar-restaurant with a comfy atmosphere and great specials.

They also have a great craft cocktail menu. Some terrific old and new creations. The food is all you say and more. Chef Peter Capalbo is probably the most talented chef north of Boston.

Cielito Lindo?

Yes, yes, yes. Go to Celito Lindo. Nice place, great food. They only have a beer and wine license, so the margaritas are compromised. But a great selection of Mexican beer.

Where can I find garlic scapes ?

I bought some at the farmer's market in Gloucester back in early August. I had no idea what they were. I asked the girl at the stand about them and she said "just grill 'em with some olive oil." They were 8 for $1. she stuffed about 30 in my bag and charged me $1. She said "We just want to get rid of them." I took them home brushed them with EVOO and put them on the grill for a minute or two. Salt and pepper. And WOW. They were awesome. Like fresh, healthy onion rings without the grease and breading.

Any suggestions for Pancakes?

Depot Diner in Beverly

Tomato based clam soup (aka Manhattan Clam Chowder)

I'll second Halibut Point. They run a great lunch special with a cup of chowder (white or red) with a sandwich and a draft beer for something like $10-12. But that Manhattan version of chowder is a superior product (this is from a die-hard New England-style chowder guy).

Salem MA Area

Too bad---almost went on Friday, but plans changed. Now re-thinking. Menu looks good. Still have an old $50 gift card from the last incarnation of that spot "T's" Wonder if they'll take it?!!?

Summer 2009 openings and closings

Gavein's, high-end prime steakhouse in Middleton closed a few weeks ago.

Seafood Place on Cape Ann?

I've said it before and I'll say it again---the haddock chowder at Lobsta Land is one of the world's best soups.

Chop Suey Sandwich - Salem Willows

3dogs--you MUST get a CSS with noodles!!! (and popcorn, of course!!)

Girls Night on the North Shore?

Steve, the hell with the girls-------- let's do a Beverly Hound crawl!!! It sounds great. Add Mandrake and guacamole with chips at Celito Lindo and it's all good. The Driver is still a good idea!!

Salem-Tavern on the Square

Will be a great addition to Salem and probably help the smaller places who will benefit from the overflow crowds that will saunter around to other places when Tavern is full. They did a great job on the building. We stopped by after lunch at the Lobster Shanty a week ago Sunday and the place was jumping at 1:30 in the afternoon. The open-air aspect is nice and they're hoping to put quite a few outside tables in the not-too-distant future. That "common denominator" description feels pretty accurate.

Chop Suey Sandwich - Salem Willows

Just thought I'd bring up this old post because I just had a CCS with noodles for lunch, and as tacky as it can be Salem Willows is a hoot. Best lunch for under $2. Best popcorn on the planet and breathtaking vistas. Happy Summer everyone.

Craft Cocktails on the North Shore?

Tryst in Beverly has an outstanding drink list dedicated to some REAL old-school cocktails. Kudos to Sean the bartender for putting that list together. Nice job, man.
