Best BBQ on 281?
I went to Inman's in Marble Falls twice this weekend. I think their brisket stands up to the places in Lockhart with no problem. Great tasting brisket and excellent Turkey sausage.
Their sauce, which personally I think if you need sauce for BBQ you've done something wrong in the smoker, is excellent, and an accompaniment to their BBQ and not a cover for bad Q.
All they smoke is beef brisket and turkey sausage, they do it quite well, and it won't cost you and arm and a leg.
Best BBQ on 281?
Thanks for the reply. Your geography is spot on, but I'd like to keep as close to 281 as possible on this trip due to time limits.
Best BBQ on 281?
I'm traveling on 281 this Friday between Dallas and Johnson City. Looking for a BBQ place to stop and have lunch. What's the best BBQ you've had on this route?
Best Dallas Texas Steak House Non-Fine Dining?
Avila's on Maple for Tex-Mex.
B-b-b-but I do like the pepper crusted mesquite smoked sirloin at Texas Land and Cattle (a chain).
Tex Mex Slop I Have Known and Loved
The best cheese enchiladas I've ever had were at Galvin's el Unico / Rolandos (R.I.P.) off of Denton Drive Cut Off and Maple. Something about the sweet onions they used made them phenomenal. They had a fire and never reopened. I still pine away for those enchiladas after years...
Creamed Chipped Beef in DFW?
From hubbuzz.com:
Barbec’s restaurant:
They have classic diner/truck stop favorites like Corned Beef Hash, Creamed Chipped Beef with Gravy (over those heavenly biscuits)

Dallas catfish: Hook, Line and Sinker review
I love HLS, it's my go to place for grilled Rainbow trout and fried cat. They also have one of the best burgers in the city.IMHO
[DFW] - where can I find Green (raw) peanuts?
They have the bags of in the shell raw and cooked at the Wal-Mart on 75 and Haskel.
State Fair
I'm going to the State Fair tonight. Anything worth seeking out this year food wise?
Best Fajitas in Dallas?
Don't laugh, but Uncle Julio's on Lemmon had some excellent fajitas the last time I was there on a friends dime. We all raved about them.
Babe's Chicken Dinner House in Carrollton
Bubba's on Hillcrest in Dallas is a sister diner of Babe's. It's not family style, but it has good fried chicken (huge pieces!) and sides.
How to show a Foodie a good time in Dallas
I agree with pizzaQTpie about showing them Tex-Mex and BBQ, neither of which is done very well in NY. My fav Tex-Mex is Avila's on Maple.
I wouldn't bother taking them to a steak place since NY knows how to do that.
Mike Anderson's BBQ- Dallas
Anderson's gets talked down a lot, but for Dallas it's not bad. It's not Central Texas nirvana, but it gets the job done and their sides are pretty good. I work across the street from them so I used to go pretty often. Not a bad area for BBQ: there's Anderson's, Sonny Bryan's and Big Al's all within about a mile of each other.
Got to give him credit for opening up his place right around the corner from the original Sonny Bryan's (when he was considered the go to place in Dallas).
[DFW] Good Inexpensive Seafood
Top Cat on Lemmon east of Inwood is pretty good for fried catfish baskets with good fries and hush puppies, fried shrimp, and po'boys. I agree about Hook Line and Sinker, it's my default place for my seafood fix. I hear they have good burgers there too.
Wichita Falls - dinner and breakfast recs?
I had a pretty good and cheap rib eye at Pioneer Restaurant #3 in Wichita Falls last summer. There are 3 in the city. Here's a map: (scroll down) Think I ate at the one right off the highway.
http://www.wichitafalls.org/attractions/index.php?label=Steaks
Here's how I described it in a travel blog:
We stopped in Wichita Falls to have an excellent Rib Eye steak dinner at a local diner. It’s the kind of place where you learn the life story of the waitress between the iced tea and dessert. Our young waitress was aided in her telling of her tale with tattoos of the names of the father of her child and the name of her deceased baby on the top of her right and left wrists, respectively. There’s got to be the makings of a county song there.
Pappy's Old Fashion Hamburgers (DAL)
Went there for lunch today. It has about 20-25 small tables, green vinyl covered checkerboard table cloths and green vinyl and chrome cushioned diner chairs.
I arrived at 11:50 and there was a line half way out the door. By noon the line was gone. I suppose much of their business comes from nearby Taylor publishing, so maybe that shift has an early lunch. So if you go, go at noon-12:30. They are open until 3 pm.
Counter service, and the extensive menu is one of those old back lit signs with plastic letters which reminds one of an old fashion burger joint. The ordering was efficient. I opted for the cheeseburger with cheddar, though american, swiss and pepper jack are offered. The standard burger is 1/2 pound. Along with the burger I had an order of hand cut fries. You can see into the grill area when at the counter and I spied that the grill was open flame, always a good sign in my opinion.
After just a few minutes wait, my order was ready. The burger was large I thought for a half pounder. The cheese looked to be grated cheddar and piled on. Quite a bit of cheese though I believe it was 50 cents extra. The patty was well done and dry, though I suppose it's possible to order it medium or even rare. I wanted to see how a "standard" order came out with out any special instructions on my part.
The fries were lightly dusted with seasoning and very good, not greasy and were skin on. Some of the best fries I've had in a while. The burger was over flowing with mustard and lettuce and onions, so be fore warned. I liked it but it is heavy handed. I almost had a small side salad of lettuce and onions (and mustard) left over from what spilled out of my burger.
Many other lunch entries were available, CFS (seemed a popular choice, though I couldn't tell if it was hand battered on location), tuna sandwiches, smothered chopped steak, etc. along with onion rings and tater tots. I usually order tater tots when available over fries, but since these were hand cut fries, I thought that warranted sampling and I'm glad I did. Most of the lunch entries were under $7 and I believe they came with fries and a drink.
This place seems popular with the near by business employees, and I wouldn't hesitate to go back and sample other menu items.
Pappy's Old Fashion Hamburgers (DAL)
I have to go visit a vendor today so I'm going to try and swing by there for lunch.
I remember years ago there used to be a place nearby called "Phone Booth Char burger " that were great. There were phones at the booths to place yor order and they were char-broiled pattys.
BTY, have you seen the tee shirts that say "I'm kind of a big deal"? I've seen them advertised at fark.com
Pappy's Old Fashion Hamburgers (DAL)
Anyone been there? I drove by it the other day. Just curious if anyone had an opinion. It's located at
1475 W Mockingbird Ln.
Might have to try it myself since it had a "high dive" quality about it.

Grimaldi's - Dallas
I thought the house salad I had last week was way over dressed. I'm going tonight and trying the Caesar-along with a pie of course!
Is Herrera's still around (and other Mex questions)?
Good to know, I sometimes go there after a night at Dada ;^)
Is Herrera's still around (and other Mex questions)?
I think Omega's is closed. I believe there's a diner in that location now next to the Chop Shop.
Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory
I've had pretty good luck at La Popular, brought them into work and peeps seem to love them. I also did have a problem ordering one time from La Popular. I used their e-mail ordering system and when I arrived to pick up my order they stated that the person that filled the e-mail orders hadn't been there for a couple of days...

Ethnic cooking classes in Dallas/FW?
You might try the cooking classes at Central Market. Looks like a one evening class each. No experience, affiliation, etc. Looks like in January they have a Greek, Mediterranean, and "Dinner in Provence" classes.

Come on dal foodies, step up to the plate!
Ricardo has a hand in both places, but I believe there are two other partners involved with Tradicion that have no affiliation with Avila's
Come on dal foodies, step up to the plate!
I just came back from lunch at Tradicion on Lemmon ave. I was worried because I had seen an entry on another thread that this little gem was closed. It is not! But there was only a 5 top and another 1 top at high noon today. Now folks, I went a little out of my way to check out and eat there today. As true foodies it would be a crime to let this little treasure go under from lack of customers.
I mean a brisket taco lunch for $5.95 with attentive service you don't normally see at this price point.
Lets keep this place that is in the wasteland that is Lemmon avenue alive and thriving!
No affiliation, etc.
