Gulf Shores, Alabama: Non-Seafood Restaurants

Again, thanks for the putt putt recommendation. Our firstborn is now 3 1/2 and he's able to enjoy those sort of activities. And we driving around there and were thinking of doing it. We have a grill here, so buying our seafood is always an option, So, please let me know.

On another note, I just passed a new place called Hog Wild BBQ. Wondering if it's any good. Because I'm from NY, coming down south even the bad BBQ places are pretty good to me most likely.

Gulf Shores, Alabama: Non-Seafood Restaurants

Thanks! The family and I just got to the Gulf Shores today. I'm glad you suggested places in Foley and Summerdale. We've been to Tin Top (one of our favorites) and to Lamberts (exactly how you described it). I am thinking the pharmacy will be a great place to take my son. I've never tried Desotos, but maybe I should.

Gulf Shores, Alabama: Non-Seafood Restaurants

Ok, we go down to the Gulf Shores every year. I have my favorites. But because I only go once a year and with the economy improving, maybe there are new places that have opened and worth checking out? Plus, are there good places that are not seafood. After days of just eating seafood, it's nice to take a rest and eat something different. Like maybe Ribs, Mexican?? Any suggestions...

Here are some of my favorites:
1. Gulf Shores Steamers
2. Cobalt
3. Cosmo's

Visiting Gulf shores Alabama - Where to eat?

Grazie is probably the best Italian you'll get in the Gulf Shores. Super nice staff. I could not compare it with any place in NYC, but after tons of seafood, it's nice to get a decent pasta dish here.

Visiting Gulf shores Alabama - Where to eat?

Hey, the ORIGINAL Steamers moved from Gulf Shores to Orange Beach. Now the new Steamers ain't bad and it's closer to my place, BUT the original one is far superior. http://www.gulfshoressteamer.com

Eating in Gulf Shores AL

Sorry for the late reply. We did end up going to Lulu's. It was great for the kid. But, nothing too great about the food. A bit chain-esque. Similar to the Hangout. Here's is the Billy's information. I realize I'm writing this over half a year after your comment. Sorry

I need a good butcher in Queens

I second International Meat Market. Super clean and very nice. They carry D'Artagnan poultry, which is a plus. Unfortunately, I don't live in Astoria, but will travel.

I need a good butcher in Queens

By the way, don't go to Meat Hook. It's way expensive and not worth it. Like a fool, I went back and got screwed again. I have to say, I'm not cheap about my meat. If the quality is amazing, I don't mind paying for it.

I tried Mario's Meat Market in Middle Village. I liked it, but only got some ground beef for a BBQ, so I can't say too much about it. But it's clean and friendly.

Eating in Gulf Shores AL

This our 3rd trip to the Gulf Shore. Tokyo, really liked your reviews. Lambert's and Louisiana Lagniappe stirred my interest, but may skip it after reading your reviews. Cobalt is definitely one of the best down here.

One of our favorite restaurants down here is The Gulf Shore Steamers. Now it's under new ownership and is called The Steamers. They re-painted the whole place and changed the menu slightly. It has lost a little of its edge and the spices used in the steamers are a little light than usual. What makes this place stand out from the others is the simplicity. Nothing is covered with fried and batter.

But the best place in the Gulf Shore is Billy's Seafood. Get your own and cook it. Now we're gonna try Lulu's for lunch today.

I need a good butcher in Queens

I had this same question this weekend. Was thinking of going to Whole Foods in the city, but decided to try the Meat Hook in Williamsburg. For now, it seems SS Natural is the best option. Though Metro Meats is a good butcher for non-organic red meat (got a great rack of lamb a few weeks ago from them).

Anyone know where SS Natural gets their meat from?

HELP!! In Forest Hills

Just passed by this place today. Looks really good. Doesn't seem like the typical "red sauce" Italian restaurant. But this is just based on the menu and the look of the pace. Here's a link to some buzz so far.

New Greek Restaurant in Forest Hills?

Looks like the new restaurant is called Nick's Bistro. Anyone have any info?

Gulf Shores, AL (Trip #2)

We were at the Gulf Shores earlier this summer and well, we are going on our second trip there this weekend. I have my list of places I want to revisit as well as my list of places to go to.

But, am I missing anything???

Revisit:
Cobalt, Tin Top, Gulf Shore Steamers

Will Visit:
Cosmo's (cuz it's the same owners as Cobalt), Cotton's, maybe the Shed BBQ Joint

Whadya think? We are not interested in the common super-fried, tourist traps. No offense, we love super-fried stuff. Ok, let me rephrase, mostly trying to avoid the standards...

New Greek Restaurant in Forest Hills?

Has anyone heard a rumor that a new greek restaurant is opening in the Casa de Elian spot on Metropolitan. The woman at Wafa told me, but can't seem to find any info confirming this.

Looking for Caputo 00 flour

Supposedly there are slight differences. I have not used the the Chef's flour. I'm sure if I did a taste test, I might not even know the difference. Here is a quote from a Caputo resource on that forno site:

"Caputo makes a wide range of flours, but there are three basic pizza flours. The flour in the small 1 kg blue bag (Ideale per pizze e dolce) is the most general purpose and the lightest. The flour in large 25 kg blue bag is called Pizzeria, and is used "as is" by most pizzerias. It is a little stronger than the flour in the small bag, but as David says -- you really have to be a pro to tell the difference. I have switched back and forth between the two over the years (including in the same night), and they are very similar.

Then, there is Rosso (or Red), which is the strongest of the three. Some pizzerias use it straight and some mix it with a general purpose flour to get a slightly lighter mix. Pizza enthusiasts that have got their hands on Rosso think it's great. Think of the Rosso as a version of the blue Pizzeria flour with just a little more muscle -- a chewier crumb, and a crunchier crust, that still has the incredible extensibility."

Sushi in Forest Hills/Rego Park

I agree with you. Sushi Oh was good at one time. But, it was on a strong decline, but sometimes you could get a decent meal depending on who was behind the sushi counter. Anyway, Sushi Time took over and improved everything. Super fresh fish and the rolls are crafted very well. I mean it's sushi and the details are very important. You want fresh rice with your fresh fish, not too much to ask for. The special rolls are huge and priced cheap. And everyone was super nice.

I got delivery tonight for the first time. It was the final test and they passed. Vegetable gyozas appeared to be handmade (not positive) but didn't look like that generic dumpling you get in the freezer section along with a crunchy spicy roll and a tamago sushi. All very good. I hope they keep up the good work.

Looking for Caputo 00 flour

There are a couple of Caputo 00 flours. The most popular one that people are using in pizzas are only sold in 55 lb. bags. I buy mine online, where they repackage the 55 lbs into 5 lb. bags.

Yeah not cheap, especially when you add on shipping. The price you pay for good pizza...

Italian Specialty Market near Forest Hills

I'm looking for a really good Italian specialty market. Somewhere they make their own mozzarella, maybe imported some buffalo mozz, homemade pastas, and imported other goods such as pasta, flour, etc.

2 of my favorite places in Manhattan are Russo's (East Village) and Buon Italia (Chelsea Market). I've never been to Sapori D'Ischia during the day. Still it's not the closest place to go to. It's easier to almost go to the places in the city.

Best pizza in Forest Hills?

I agree 100%! I've been rocking A&J's this whole time, when I just want a pizza-by-the-slice. But, my wife and I were walking around that area of FH last summer and ate there for the first time. Not sure why people don't know much about it, besides Ray Romano...

feeling a little cranky about delivery via TakeOut Connection in Forest Hills

We stopped ordering through Take Out Connection. It's just too expensive and it takes way too long to get the food. We try to stick to the places that have free delivery.

Review - Casa de Elian (Forest Hills)

I agree with you, but it's also good to have some quality food in Forest Hills. I would rather support a restaurant with good food than go to the other mexican options in Forest Hills. Plus, because we know they are struggling, it shows that they are not just overcharging for the sake of overcharging.

Best Coffee in Chelsea

So, I went into the Chelsea Market yesterday to get a cup of Stumptown. And, Ninth St stopped selling Stumptown. I forget the name of the coffee they are selling now, but the guy told me it's a blend that the roaster (in Chicago) is making specifically for them. Anyway, I had an Americano and it was delicious. But at the same time, I am bummed they are not selling Stumptown. I guess I'll be headed to the Ace Hotel...

Best Pizza in Queens ??

Nick's is hands down my favorite. But if you want a great pizza-by-the-slice, the place is Lillian Pizzeria. Besides being featured in Everybody Loves Raymond ;) it is honestly a good slice. I think it is underrated. Original owner still makes the pizza, it's location is off the beaten path and there is no delivery. So, it's not very accessible...

Best Coffee in Chelsea

The guy at Ninth Street did say Stumptown is opening a roaster (and probably it's own store? ) in NYC soon.

Il Poeta on Metropolitan (Forest Hills)

My wife and I went this past weekend. We were in the mood for Italian. I started my search in the city and she said we should try Il Poeta. We only know it because our favorite wine store, The Wine Room, recommended it highly. And because we really like their wine, we decided to try it. We were not disappointed. We had the special appetizer, burrata. It has a little truffle oil on top. Can't go wrong with burrata. We split 2 main dishes, gnocchi and a red snapper special. The Gnocchi was amazing, but the red snapper was just ok. We also had a great Nero Di Avola wine. We ended up talking to a partner/owner, I think. He was very nice. Anyway, we loved it. I have to say we were there on a Saturday night around 10:30 and the place was still packed. In this economy, this is a great sign. I would hate to be in a place that I really like and find it empty.
Anyway, Metropolitan Ave is really restaurant row in Forest Hills. You would think Austin would be it, but it's not.

Best Coffee in Chelsea

Ok, I've tried 2 in the neighborhood and here's my initial reactions. Joe The Art of Coffee and Ninth Street Espresso. I tried Ninth first. I loved it. At first, I felt their dark roast, Hair Bender, tasted lighter than most dark roasts. It was still amazing. Next, I tried Joe. I love that they offer coffee classes and everyone there was really nice. I had the espresso while I was there. It was great. There was a great bittersweet flavor. But, I wasn't as impressed with the beans I brought home. I have to agree, Ninth is expensive, but it is worth it.

Next I'l try Cafe Grumpy...

Piccola Venezia, L'Incontro, Manducatis, or Manetta?

What about Sapori d'Ischia? I always love it there. Can't go wrong when you know all the ingredients are good, imported food. Though I know people are very mixed with it. Either love it or hate it.

(I'm aware I strayed from the original topic, sorry. But in the same vein, right?)

Best Coffee in Chelsea

Even though I have lived in 4 out of the 5 boroughs, I have almost always worked in Midtown. Well, the gods like me and I'm finally out of midtown and am in Chelsea. Work is 20x better. I walk the streets and I'm not rushing to work or to the subway.

Anyway, I digress. I'm looking for some good coffee beans in Chelsea. Preferably, somewhere where they roast their own, so I know the beans haven't been sitting around for weeks OR to think that it's been shipped from South America to Seattle to New York. Though, I'm open. I just want some kick-@ss coffee.

Review - Casa de Elian (Forest Hills)

I have to say, finally some decent Mexican in Forest Hills.
