Pathetic state of burgers in Winston and Greensboro
I'm still pretty new to the area and was in total agreement with you until I tried the burger at West End Cafe a few days ago. I ordered it blackened (not usually my style) and it came out nicely charred and still juicy in the middle. Fries were nothing special...
Help remembering the name of an "old timey" restaurant in the Piedmont area
Hillbilly Hideaway! Wow, thank you so much. I thought this would be a longshot. I will plan to check out Old Place as well.

Help remembering the name of an "old timey" restaurant in the Piedmont area
I am trying to remember the name of a certain restaurant in the Winston Salem/Greensboro/Charlotte area that serves traditional southern food in an old fashioned setting. I remember that the place was written about in a travel article. The place has no menu, and you basically get whatever they decided to make on that particular day. It is a very old family run restaurant that is located in a rural area. I understand that this is not much info to go on, but I would also be interested to hear about any similar places.
Help please: Celebration dinner for 4 people
Thanks for the recs. I will be looking into all of them.
The menu at Animal looks awesome! I'll save it for another night though.
Help please: Celebration dinner for 4 people
I am heading to L.A. next week and would like to take my family out for a celebratory dinner. We are a group of 4 and I want to spend ~$50-$60 per person total (not big drinkers).
Interested in: Tasting menus, French techniques, unique eats, great service.
Not interested in: Asian (although I am Asian and love Asian food), buffets, chains.
Thank you very much
Sukiyaki or okonomiyaki in Boston?
Huge portion and very good. Be prepared to share.
Viva Mi Arepa- Recs?
The arepas are indeed very good. However, my favorite item on the menu is the Mondongo. When they have it, you will see a bowl on just about every table.
ISO Macapuno coconut strings in heavy syrup
That is completely unlike any bibingka I have ever seen... That said, it does look good. However, the best thing about bibingka is the salted egg that is usually embedded in the cake. Cooking it in banana leaves also imparts lots of flavor.
Second Adam's recs for places to buy macapuno. Sure Pinoy surely has it as well as Kam Man.
where is there good pad thai?
I consider myseelf a Pad Thai purist. That means nothing crispy or bright orange. The most authentic, home style, rendition I have found is from Smile Thai in the food court at Hong Kong Market in Allston.
Street Food/"Grub"/Food Trucks along the Freedom Trail
Definitely Galleria Umberto when you get to the North End. Fits the bill perfectly.
Prime Rib at KO Prime
I'll try to answer although it's been more than half a year since my visit.
The prime rib was very good. Nice crust, tender, good beefy flavor. The $29.95 is for the meat only, no sides. Sides are large enough to share The service was very good. They start you off with a nice thick slice and I suppose that this will be plenty for most people. I have a pretty big appetite and asked for a small second piece (it is AYCE after all) and could not finish it...
Taking into account the cool vibe, location, and attentive service, $29.95 is a good deal.
Kobe or simply wagyu?
Can you share your protocol for 18 day home dry aging? Thanks.
Restaurants on the Cape? (No seafood shacks)
Chappaquoit Grill would be an excellent option in Falmouth
Best Prime Rib deal?
I think this is the best deal when you consider quality and ambiance. I tried it a few months ago and really enjoyed my meal.
Best Clam/Lobster Bake for a wedding in North Truro area?
Second for Bob Starck and the Old Fashioned Crew. They do a true "clam bake" rather than the "lobster boil" that some of the other companies have. The cooking method makes huge difference in flavor.
Great people to work with too.
Sports bar in Fort Lauderdale?
Hi,
I am in town for a conference and am looking for a sports bar that has good food and will be showing the Pacquiao/Hatton fight this Saturday. I am staying at the Ocean Sky resort. I won't have a car but may have a scooter and am willing to take a taxi.
Thank You
Coast cafe - service issue
I've never been to Coast Cafe but Southern style pan fried chicken takes quite a while to cook (~20min per side when the oil is at the right temp). Unless you're using a KFC style pressure fryer.
Where to find beef ribs?
Best beef ribs I've found in Boston are at Pit Stop BBQ in Dorchester. Prices are low and although I'm usually a pork rib fan, I actually prefer beef when ordering from here.
Downtown:3/22-28 daily Tasteful for brunch, ethiopian dnr etc?
Lots of ?'s here... I can try to hit a few.
Addis Red Sea is quite good, though not as good as what I've had in DC.
You should plan an evening in the North End, probably nothing like it in FL. My favorite place there is Neptune Oyster (although it is not Italian). Pizzeria Regina is also yummy and would be a hit with your teen.
There are many more than just 2 Legals. There are 2 in the Prudential alone. Not a chow favorite, but would fit the bill if you just wanted steamed lobster.
Local wine anyone?
I second Sakonnet. Went for a tasting a few years ago and thought it was just okay (we purchased 1 bottle). Went again last month and found the whites to be very nice (ended up with 8 bottles). The reds still left much to be desired...
Still in search of Som-Tum (Green Papaya Salad )
Xinh Xinh has a very nice Vietnamese version of green papaya salad.
Mondongo
I had a fantastic mondongo (tripe stew) at a Venezuelan restaurant today and would like to try to make it at home. Searching online, there are so many vastly different versions that come from various regions. I would appreciate a good recipe to start with. Every family seems to have their own variation. Any pointers? For example, some recipes use the tripe cooking liquid in the stew and others do not. Thank You.
sous vide
All I see on their menu now is a braised version. Can anyone confirm if they still prepare it sous vide?
Where to find fresh juice in Boston
I haven't been in a while, but is the Juice Cart in the Harvard Square T-station still open? That place would certainly fit the bill.
JP - Royal Fried Chicken? new Chinese?
Thank you. Sounds good enough for us to give it a try- considering we live within a pleasant stroll.
JP - Royal Fried Chicken? new Chinese?
Has anyone tried the Fried Chicken place mentioned by the OP?
Looking for great eggs in Boston
Just curious because of the emphasis on "all winter". I thought the Farmers market was only through November.
Regarding eggs, we buy Chip-in or from farmstands, and have noticed that the yolks have a more intense orange color and eggy flavor. The yolks also seem to stand up taller (i.e. are more spherical) when the egg of broken into a frying pan. When we are baking, we buy less expensive supermarket eggs.
Looking for a fun restaurant/bar for a long dinner
Tangierino in Charlestown might fit the bill. They have some tables (under tents) with couch seating and the drinks and entertainment will keep a smile on your face through the evening
How much food to order at Shabu Zen?
My wife and I usually get 1 "main course" and supplement with lots of different veggies and an a la carte item or two. This is usually plenty of food for us, and I'm a huge eater.
As far as a la carte items, I would recommend the fish cake. Is it a paste that comes in a bamboo scoop. Small portions of this are plopped into the broth.
