Looking for good take out in Etobicoke
I would manage your expectations around this one, craigger. I found the ambience, service and presentation to be pretty good, but the food itself to be lacking. The springrolls were small and not very vietnamese (my faves are at Saigon Palace, to give you a sense of what i think of as good). I had a "spicy chicken curry" which was not spicy, and had very little flavour (nice white dishes though, which you won't be enjoying because we're talking take-out). My spouse had the vermicelli and it was just ok. Overall, not nearly as good as some of the Vietnamese places downtown, but a passable change of pace for those of us in the west end.
Looking for good take out in Etobicoke
A couple of my faves:
New Toronto Fish and Chips (on 5th Street, north of lakeshore); Old school fabulous. everything made fresh to order, homemade fries, tender fish, and crispy well seasoned batter. Sometimes a tad greasy, but that's the nature of the beast...
Thyme 4 Pasta (on Queensway between Islington and Royal York); pretty decent italian food. We love the Penne Arrabiata, and even the take-out orders come with a square of house made foccacia bread, wrapped in wax paper.
Astoria (Dundas W of the 427- technically in Mississagua, but very close to me in the south west end of etobicoke); large pieces of freshly grilled chicken souvlaki, flavourfullt seasoned rice and potatoes, good quality feta on the salads and super garlicky tatziki
Foodstuffs in South Etobicoke
Though it certainly doesn't fit all your criteria, my new favorite is the store opened by the Shasha Bread Co (on Plastic Ave; Queensway east of Islington. turn south at the Baskin Robbins).
They have their amazing organic whole grain breads fresh from where it's baked (3 doors north), as well as spelt pizza crusts and 5 flavours of their little heart shaped snap cookies (ginger snaps, cocoa snaps, lemon poppy seed snaps...). They also sell bags of the specialty flours they use in the baking of their breads. They also have an expanding selection of organic/natural grocery products, and a cold case with some really good dips and pestos. No fresh produce, but lots of good stuff.
Melitta Coffee Cone
I got one of those plastic Melitta drip cone thingys that sits on a regular cup/mug at Canadian Tire.
New Thai Restaurant
Yes, it's called Ivory Thailand...
Has anyone else eaten there? I walked by last thursday night and there were only about 15 diners in the whole (big) place. Furniture and decor looks nice...
Cheese Blintzes
I live in south Etobicoke and got really good cheese bintzes at that European Deli/ Sausage Factory on the Queensway. I think it's called Czecowski or something like that (hope i'm not mixing the name up with the uber-trendy Queen West resto). It's on the south side of Queensway, just east of Islington, past the new row of townhouses.
They also had some other take-out food that looked good (schnitzels, pierogies and i think even cabbage rolls).
The perfect Foodie Wedding--what would you do?
I'm getting ready to make my food choices for our wedding in September, which is going to be at White Oaks in NOTL. The catering is certainly not as good as their very good restaurant, Liv, but there's lots of good choices. My only concern is about making choices that most folks will enjoy. Seafood is too risky and in fact lots of folks don't even eat fish. Steak or beef tenderloin might be nice, but my partner only likes those things done well (destroy a perfectly good piece of meat why don't you?). Anyways, it's hard to pick based on what most people like, because then i'm sure we will end up with the proverbial rubber chicken dinner (although at their prices it better not be rubbery), but i also think picking something really special may not be well received.
My friend did his wedding with a 10 course tasting menu, featuring incredible things like spring pea soup with creme fraiche and foie gras, and then got the pleasure of seeing peoples' $200 meals sit untouched. Two of his ruder guests even went next door for chinese take-away and brought it back. That would have enraged me....
Old School in Mississagua
Thanks for the suggestion Stephen and pancake.
I don't think Le Castille is ideal because they don't eat seafood or steak I know they have roast beef on the menu, but i'd like a place where they might enjoy more than one choice.
I had a date try to impress me once by taking me to Le Castille. I thought the meal was just ok, but the prices were very high for what we got... I found the decor horrid and the old school service attentive but sexist.
Old School in Mississagua
My newly retired father-in-law just got engaged, and my partner and I would like to take him and his fiancee out for a meal to celebrate.
They're both British, non-epicurian or gastronomically adventurous, so we're looking for something that serves basic comfort foods like roast beef, meatloaf, pork chops, etc. This will be such a boring meal for me...
The restaurant should be wheelchair accessible, and able to take reservations- neither of the newly betrothed will be able to stand in a line.
I'm stumped! Please help...
Thanks!
Dessert Trends on Harbord
Has anyone actually ordered one of their wedding cakes? They look spectacular, but i'm curious as to the taste?
Banana Dishes
I second the fried bananas in rum butter caramel sauce. Unbelievably good...
Fish and Chips
I was there a couple of months ago and it was terrible. We were the only ones there and the fish was terribly overcooked (beyond dried out) and the fries were flavourless.
My fave in south etobicoke is New Toronto Fish and Chips which is a very old/run down looking place but serves great stuff. The batter is great, and is tasty and a little salted. Fries are perfect size and not overcooked (a little crispy a little soft- my ideal combination). It can tend towards being a little greasy, but i always press my fish down between napkins anyways to get out any extra oil...
Seeking a Great Chocolate Cake
Follow-up:
Well the party was a great success. We ended up getting the cake from the Hot Oven, in Cloverdale Mall. It was good. Old School (as desired) 3 layer chocolate cake with fudge icing. It was very chocolatey, but just on the edge of being too sweet (icing, not the cake...).
Will try the french bakery asap...sounds divine.
Thanks everyone for the input.
Seeking a Great Chocolate Cake
I'm looking for a delicious chocolate birthday cake for a birthday party i'm throwing on saturday night.
I want something classic (old school rather than mousse cake, flourless or lava chocolate cake).
I'm in South Etobicoke but will travel for greatness...
Thanks, Chowhounds!
