Naples Bummer Handsome Harry's

LilMsFoodie, from the looks of Handsome Harrys the week I stayed in Naples (Oct26), it looks like you've had no trouble getting into Campiello! I had the asian wings for appetizer-AMAZING! My Mojito was very good, too. I rhapsodized about the Lobster Bisque for days- it reminded me of my father's Avgolemono. I had the lamb- the likes of which I've never tasted. I usually only order rib chops or rack. These were so succulent and tender, I could use my fork alone. The lack of gaminess the next day when I ate my leftovers cold impressed me. As did the decor, the service (although I've heard some complaints from others) and just about everything else. My daughter-in-law had a pasta dish with steak and rappini. I ate quite a bit of that, as did my 3 year old grandaughter when we got home. Desert? To die for. We had the chocolate cake and carrot cake- gorgeous, but ridiculously HUGE. Like my friends told me, HANDSOME HARRYS THIRD STREET BISTRO IS DIVINE! I also read a couple of reviews- they gave Handsome Harry's lots of kudos. Maybe they needed some time to work out their kinks. As Julia Child would say,,, "Num, num ,num!"

Chris Kimball/America's Test Kitchen

Absolutely LOVE America's Test Kitchen! I TIVO all the cooking shows and have most of their books. I love Kimballs' style of writing(he's obviously multi-talented!). Iremember him from my youth when he put out was it "East-West Journal"? One of my heroes. PIXLPI

knife sharpening

Ernie is right! They have the scoop on this! If you use your Henckels regularly you would do well to get the chefs choice they recommend (I think its the 130). Godd Luck!

Claudia Fleming recipe

Dag, I started the recipe after I read your post. Since you said it was bland, I added an oz more white chocolate and will use some vanilla, and/or maybe some Kahlua. Hopefully, it will still "whip"! Thanks for taking the time to send the recipe - I'll let you know if my new version flopped. The filling sure does taste good at this stage- like coffee ice cream! Pixlpi

Best Web / mail-order sources for used cookbooks

I use Jessica's Biscuit (ecookbooks.com) for new cookbooks, but have excellent results at amazon.com for used. I have never had any problems, usually get my book in 2-5 days and at a fraction of the original cost! Also many out of print books and cookbooks. Try it!

Claudia Fleming recipe

Thanks Dag, It really sounds amazing. I know it's a pain to type out arecipe online. But, if you do I promise to follow thru....... Pixlpi

Finally: some good news Binghamton/Endicott

IEALOIC, Yes! I forgot Zazous! I've had many nice meals there. And Martini's. Kampai is always good. Again, Consuls is my fav Italian food. Cortese was definatly not good the 2 times I have been. New places? Try Lampy's in Endicott (remember not to drink the water or breathe) And did you ever eat at that Thai restaurant (not new) in Endicott on Watson Blvd? That's pretty good.

Finally: some good news Binghamton/Endicott

Jimmyg, We have walked past this place many times and it is always packed! We will try it on your recommendation!

Finally: some good news Binghamton/Endicott

Joe, My husband loves the gelato at Antonios. I'm not crazy about the food, but great cappucino and yes, it is nice to have a place that stays open late. Little Venice does have great manicotti, but honestly aside from that, their homeade pasta with sauce and their martini's, it is not great. Even meatballs and sausage are not good! How to you make a bad meatball? Or find taseless sausage? But! I must say, Lost Dog has some great food! Such as their coconut shrimp (amazing sauce), parm crusted chicken with asparagus and balsamic on a hard roll or croissant with sweet potato fries! Great crisp salads with fresh homeade dressings! Anyway, I usually enjoy my meal there.I will try the Korean place when the open back up. What about the Vietnamese place in Johnson City? And have you tried Lemongrass? I have heard nothing about this new place.

Finally: some good news Binghamton/Endicott

Kloomis, Little Venice is still here. And you are right- the Manicotti is great! Good coffee and sandwiches at The Lost Dog. (but I have the cookbook from Black Dog Cafe!) PS Restaurant in Vestal is very good. If you visit, try them. They are in the Giant Plaza on Vestal Pkwy- of all places!

Cool vegan cookbooks

The Candle Cafe Cookbook (pierson and potenza) is absolutly fabulous as well as Serene Cuisine (moona) and one other called The Three Bowls (can't remember author) just beautiful!
Good luck!

Not Oreo, Not Hydrox... Name this sandwich cookie!

My Aunt used to bring them to me! They were called Yum-Yums!! The girl scout cookies with coconut, caramel and choco are a close 2nd. But, Yum-Yums they were the best!

Not Oreo, Not Hydrox... Name this sandwich cookie!

I remember raisin biscuits! So perfect...I think they came in apple too, which I didn't care for as much. I also loved Chipsies which were horribly sweet! White creamy center between 2 choco chip "cookies". Grasshoppers were also popular at the same time.

How have your tastebuds changed?

When I was a child I was absolutely appalled by the smell of baked potatos! Of all things! I couldn't understand how anyone could possibly go near them! So strange....now I can't think of anything I wouldn't eat.

Kitchen Renovation

I read an article that someone wrote about using Marble instead of granite as it wasn't as shiny. She said some warned her that it stained more easily, but that she hadn't (at the time) had any problems. Please let me know about the steam injection oven. I plan to renovate in a yr or 2 and am curious.I got a lot of info (pics and advice) about appliances, etc on my new fav spot gardenweb.com .It's not just gardening has everything about home going on. And they don't "moderate" your posts so closely.

Finally: some good news Binghamton/Endicott

Joe, By now you know they closed the Curry &Grill. I'm sorry to say that I never had the opportunity to try it as my husband is not fond of Indian food. Consul's is one of our fav's, though. At least once a week. Coffee at L'Aveggio is very good. I have stopped going there, however, as I think the "Barrista" has an attitude problem. His wife is an angel, I think.

Moving to Ithaca from LA--any eats out here?

Where is Pangea, Joe? And how come I can't click on your name and peek at your profile? Just wondering. I live in Binghamton, too.

Moving to Ithaca from LA--any eats out here?

I agree- it's sad, but true. The food at Moosewood is no longer great. Farmers Market is great, though. The Thai restaurant in the commons (name?) is wonderful! I also heard that Gimme Coffee is excellent!

Dinasaur BBQ in Syracuse - Amazing

Any updates on the new restaurant? Anyone? The Dinosaur BBQ Cookbook is one of my fav top 5. MMM MMM Good!!!

Cooking Clubs

Thanks, Diva! I go to Wegman's at least twice a week. They don't have any food events in the Binghamton store. Maybe in one of the larger stores. But that was a good tip! Guess I have to travel 3+ hours to the CIA for a course!

Is there a great place for pizza in Endwell or vicinity

Tony, It's been a while since you posted this, but if you happen to check...here's my 2 cents! My husband and I love the "hot pies" at Consuls Family Kitchen located on Oak Hill in Endicott. We also love Joey's Pizza (and Italian Ices) up the street (and hill) from Consul's. Good Luck!

Can you name 3 things you like about Starbucks?

I agree! The iced lattes are better- but I prefer them made with 2%. They do usually have excellent employees. Is it from all the caffeine? Or what? They are soooo friendly and happy. Sometimes my barista sings to me! I also love the music they play and have available.

Best food around Courtland Manor NY

Seems I ate at a great little cafe once...in an old depot perhaps? The Flying Pig. Anyone remember what stop it is?

inexpensive, but good, olive oil? [Moved from Home Cooking]

I like Goya Extra Virgin Olive oil. Cooks illustrated gave it high taste ratings at one time and I have always stuck with it.Currently they rec DaVinci, Colavita and Filippo Berio for supermarket extra virgin olive oils. Good luck!

'dry' cake

With you on that PBSF! I thought Red Velvet cake was a southern treat. I live in NY (albeit upstate, but was born in NYC) I make Ebingers Choco cake for many special occasions! Well, I don't know if it's the same recipe but it is GOOD!

What Did/Does Your Dad Cook Best?

My Dad used to make his famous (-to us his 5 children)Avgolemono Soup it is a beautiful Greek soup made with lemon and eggs. Delicious and made "when the kids came home" MMM, mmm.

French Door, Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - New Owners, Please Post

I am also looking to buy a new frig. Can't decide wether or not to go with French Door (I like the looks of the Jenn-Air and Kitchen Aid) or pay the extra (a lot extra) for a sub-zero.
I bought one about 8 yrs ago and had a lot of problems with it. I moved and heard they always did. Ice maker problems that caused ice to build up in freezer. No prob if you didn't use ice maker, but a prob if you wanted ice! I will be renovating so size isn't very important. Thanks!

Steam ovens

Thanks for the input, all. I think that the steam ovens I saw were made for small kitchens. Some have a reservoir so you can add water and don't need a special hookup. I will already have a convection oven, just not sure what brand yet. Any recommendations for that anyone?
