Green Plantains in South Bay or Peninsula?

Does anyone know where to find green plantains in the South Bay or on the Peninsula? Almost any grocery store has ripe plantains, but I need green ones!

Hole in the Wall in Sebastopol!

Managed to stop here last week both for breakfast on Saturday, and lunch on Sunday. So glad this place exists... we've been looking for good places to eat as we pass through Sebastopol, and Hole in the Wall is so much better than anything else we have found.

For breakfast we had one order of biscuits with mushroom gravy, and one with sausage gravy, and a side of the fried potatoes. They were both sublime in their own different ways, I had a slight preference for the mushroom gravy, just because it was less common. The potatoes were also amazing, especially with some gravy on them. While the biscuits were lovely, and had clearly included just a tiny bit of butter :-) I almost might go for potatoes and gravy next time.

Actually, next time we are going to try a Dutch baby!

For lunch the next day, we arrived mid-afternoon, so it was fairly quiet, and we got to have a nice talk with Adam, who is very friendly as well as being an amazing chef.
I had a Caesar salad to start, and my husband a Caesar salad with chicken. It was great to hear the whisking coming from the kitchen, and then to have Adam apologize that it took a while for the salads to come out because he was making the dressing. It was totally worth the wait! That was one of the best Caesar salads I have ever had!

Then my husband had the curried carrot soup and I had the mac and cheese --- the soup was excellent, but I think I won with the mac and cheese, especially the crunchy cheese crust on top.

We will be back...so many other things I want to try...

Acme Bread--where to buy?

Acme has a stand at several of the farmer's markets in the South Bay. Dunno if they go to any of the markets in the East Bay, but might be worth checking.

Best Ethnic Markets on Peninsula

Does anyone know of a market that does Vietnamese groceries in particular? Could be on the Peninsula or South Bay.
I'm itching to try making my own Bahn Mi...

Lunch in downtown Sacramento

Sorry for the lack of clarity... by "in the vicinity" I mean that driving is just fine, it is just that I don't want to drive all the way across town. Anything within a 10-15 minute drive from the museum is completely acceptable.

Thanks for the recommendations so far!

Lunch in downtown Sacramento

We are passing through Sacramento in a couple of weeks, and stopping at the Crocker
Art Museum, which seems to be on O Street in downtown.

Any recommendations for a good place for lunch in the vicinity? Don't care about the price range, or the cuisine, just looking for something good! We'll be there on a Friday, if that matters.

Thanks!

Gourmet or Bon Appetit?

This morning I got an email from Amazon saying that because of my recent purchase in Home and Garden, I am eligible to receive a free one-year subscription to Bon Appetit or Gourmet (or Domino, but that isn't about food, so that one was easy to eliminate).

I've never really looked at either of these magazines ... I went to their sites online, but they look pretty much the same to me (and in fact, I believe they come from the same publisher).

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how they differ, and which one is "better"?

Tamale Lady in Guerneville ?

A long time ago someone told me about a lady with a tamale stand on the River Road just outside of Guerneville. Does anyone know if she is still there? (and if so, exactly where she would be?)

Loose/Bulk Spices in Santa Clara co. / Sunnyvale area?

I think Whole Foods has bulk spices, at least they used to.

Lunch on a *weekday* in Marin County

We are heading up highway 101 on a Thursday, and I'm looking for somewhere good to have lunch.

Preferably not too far off 101, although we're willing to detour a bit for good chow.

Sadly, Pizzeria Picco is not open for lunch during the week, only on weekdays.

Would rather have something fairly casual, which lets out many of the places I have seen on this board (and anyway, most of them aren't open for lunch). Any kind of cuisine would be fine, could be as simple as burrito, pizza, burger, or whatever.

The key idea is that it has to be open for *lunch* on a *Thursday*.

Many thanks.

Fresh Tortillas in the South Bay?

I'm looking for a source for fresh tortillas in the South Bay. To buy and take home, not to eat at a restaurant. Hand-made would be preferable, but I'll settle for anything better than the packages I can buy at Albertsons...

Anyone preserving, canning or putting food up these days?

You can get pectin for making jam that does not require sugar -- it is usually right next to the regular pectin at the grocery store. There is also a brand called "Pomona's", found at more "health food' like stores, that seems to work even better than the normal Ball's or Sure-Jell brand. I have made jam successfully this way with minimal amounts of sugar (to taste, but usually around 1/2 cup per batch of jam) and also with Splenda.

The jam does come out a bit softer than a traditional with-sugar batch, but perfectly acceptable, and after trying it without so much sugar, I can't eat regular jam anymore, it is way too sweet.

Slow Food Guide

Can one order it online anywhere? Or do you have to go to Italy to get it?
(I am going to Italy (yeah!) but it would be cool to get hold of it ahead of time.
