Thanks guys,

rworangw: I realize it was last minute, but he didnt ask me to investigate for him til last night...if I was there and doing the planning, this post would have been up weeks ago.

Eat Nopal- As far as the comment about Rosa M and pompano- we actually have not been suckered into those- and we have pretty good taste in food. If you have suggestions for more authentic mexican in SF, by all means, share.

Union Sq, fisherman's wharf...i know, i know.

Hey guys,

NYC hound here. My boyfriend is in SF this weekend with his parents and needs some suggestions. Hes staying at the st francis in Union square and will be doing the tourist circuit tomorrow and sunday (incl. fisherman's wharf). He's looking for some good, not too expensive ( under 18$ entrees) restaurants near Union sq and the wharf. I know this question comes up a lot, but please help me out! I'm sure you all are aware of the awful search function on chow :) If you come to NY, i promise to help ya in return!!!!

thhhhaannnks!

Taste of the UWS?

Has anyone been before? Is it worth the money?

Thanks!

Tamarind juice on the UES?

Im around 70th and and 1st. The recipe i'm following calls for juice, but I can absolutely sub any tamarind product. I just dont have a lot of time to run around town tomorrow like i usually would :) Do you think grace's/gourmet garage/agatha&v would carry something?

Tamarind juice on the UES?

Tamarind juice on the UES?

I'm making (or attempting to make) Pad thai this weekend and I need tamarind juice. Ive already tried the asian market n 59th, the bridge market and both melange's.....to no avail. Has anyone seen tamarind juice in the area?

thanks!

Grape nut muffins?

Hey all,

Ive somehow acquired a box of grape nuts, which i dont particularly love. I do, however, love bran muffins and I know here have to be some good grape nut muffin recipes out there! Ive done an internet search so i do have some back ups, but id love a recipe hat comes with a recommendation. Anyone have one?

Thanks!

Easter Brunch, UES?

Hi all,

Im going to have family in town for easter this year and were looking for a nice brunch place. Problem is, all my favorite spots are downtown and for scheduling reasons, we'd like to stay on or near the UES (ie, midtown east or lower uws also ok, im at 66th and york). There will be 7 of us, and were looking for something upscale, yet not bust-the bank expensive (~65$pp or less?).

Thanks so much for the help!!

boring pork. helllp :)

Thanks Yall,

I ended up doing a fruit sauce like JonParker suggested- I swore i had frozen cherries in the freezer- turns out they were cranberries. Turned out lovely though :)

I like other cuts of pork, but my bf (whom im staying with right now) has an over-abundance of frozen chops that im trying to work through. Has anyone ever put boneless loin chops in a crockpot? I usually would use something fattier.... but i guess with enough liquid it might work?

OMIGOD - The Most Amazing Pork in the Crock-Pot!!!!

well, right... youd have to refrigerate it over-night, but remember, this will be cooking for 10 hours- theres no way any beasties would live through that.

boring pork. helllp :)

thank you all! great ideas!

boring pork. helllp :)

Heya, need help pleaaase :)

Im lazy with porkchops. Normally I just coat them with whatever seasoning im feeling like and pan fry them thil done. Its tasty, and easy.... but boring. So, Im looking for alternate suggestions! Something about the fact that theyre in the forms of chops is draining my creativity.... Does anyone have an interesting, delicious pork recipe? We eat anything- all flavors so lay it on me!

thanks!

In town for the weekend from NYC- need help pleeeaasse :)

Hey guys,

Im so sorry it took me so long to get back to you all! Here's what we ended up hitting:

Pizza paradiso- it had been recommended by several people we know and we needed something easy and low key. The pizza was fantastic but we made the mistake of ordering a lamb "panini." Why we would do that at a pizza place, im not sure.....but it wasnt very good and wasnt even a panini ( not pressed, or even warm). def. stick to the pizza!

science club for drinks- just wandered upon it, but really liked the vibe.

kramer and afterwords- drinks and books. We sat in the bar on the book side, not the restaurant side. I really liked it, but maybe that was because we were right beside the cookbooks and i could drunkenly ( it was our 4th stop, late at night) wax poetic about alice waters, lol. Good times.

Bar Pilar- we LOVED it. Good food, cozy atmosphere. You walk in and it looks like a cozy little irish-like bar at which you might grab a burger, but the menu was so interesting! We had rabbit rillette, pork confit with polenta, anchovies on toast, roasted artichokes, and sardines. The food was just delicious and simple and the prices were good. HIGHLY recommend it!

Tabard for drinks- Sat in front of the fire with a bottle of wine. LOVED it too. Whomever said it was just like being in vermont was totally right. Kitchy little inn....will definitely go back for brunch.

Those are the only places of note that we made it to. Im bummed that ethiopian didnt happen, but im definitely going back, so there will be another chance. Thank you all sooo much for your help, we had a wonderful time!

Heating empty Le Creuset?

I have a massive Le Creuset- I cant remember how many qts it is..... its just VERY big, maybe 12"+ in diameter (im gonna measure when i go home). Anyways, I know this is "too large" for the no knead bread, but its all ive got. Will it work?

In town for the weekend from NYC- need help pleeeaasse :)

thanks so much so far! keep em comin!

In town for the weekend from NYC- need help pleeeaasse :)

My BF is in town for a couple weeks and I will be meeting himthis weekend (Fri-Sun). We need some recs! Ive grabbed some great upscale suggestions off of other threads (Corduroy, Tosca, Restaurant Eve etc), but im looking for some great hole-in-the-wall, distinctly DC type restaurants. Were staying very near Dupont Circle, but are willing to travel for food. We love cozy restaurants with vibrant food. Price isnt tooooo important, but since i have lots of pricier suggestions already, Id love some slightly cheaper options. We eat ANYthing, so dont hold back!

thanks SO much and i promise ill reciprocate next time you need help from the NYC board! :)

need a west village "fun" dinner place

agreed

Steak Tartare?

Hey, My bf is craving steak tartare. Where could we find some ( reasonably priced) good tartare in the city(any neighborhood)? thanks!

Kefi's new $16 prixe fixe?

Are youo sure? I cant find that info anywhere....

When is Kefi moving?

Question about the 17$ Prix fixe- Is it offered every night? Or just certain nights?

I'd like to hear how people think the food compares to the taht at the old space- i hope it hasnt changed....

Low-key Sat night dinner in Nolita--entrees under $20

How about cafe gitane?

Date on the Upper East Side

mia dona is on 58th.... It is great, but its not on the UES. Spigolo would work, as would UVA. Ive heard great things about etats-uns but i havent been there

UES Tonight-Fun but Casual

May be too late, but id suggest Canyon road (75th/1st)- upscale (sort of) mexican- great margaritas. Mole duck burrito or casuela are great.

If youre really feeling italian, i like Uva (76th/2nd). interesting italian fare and a good place for girlfriends :)

Help!!! 30th Birthday party(it's getting critical)

ditto Inoteca and Alta, Ive been to both wih groups and had a great time. The group prixe fixe at 'inoteca is fantastic. Everything's delicious at Alta.

Ive heard Essex has a great deal for groups, but i cant comment on the quality of the food.....

havana alma de cuba has a prixe fixe for large groups (unlimited sangria i think) thats fantastic. It may be a little above price range, but hey, it includes drinks :)

The Glorious Foods of Greece: Sweets

Are these anything like the ones they sell at omonia in astoria? Kinda big, chewy, dense amaretti? cuz theyre delicious... and im searching for a recipe :)

Top five for $25

Just wanted to revive this thread! Any new places?

mine would be ( in no order)

1.Inoteca
2.Tartine
3.caracas arepa bar
4. cafe orlin
5. cafe cortadito

I have good honey; inspire me with good ideas!

I think it was last months food and wine that had a section about cooking with honey. They focused on bringing out the flavors of specific honeys. I made a moroccan honey chicken with apricots and olives. Omg it was fantastic- id take a look.
