Best non-steakhouse steak? Where?

What do you think of Bastas?

Best non-steakhouse steak? Where?

Any recommendations for the best non-steakhouse steak in Portland? I hate El Gaucho--they put gravy on a steak. Yuk! Ruth's Chris, Morton's they are CHAINS! Yeah, I like The Ringside but c'mon, they have no idea how to cook a vegetable.

I'm looking for a real restaurant that knows how to cook a steak--and has integrity.

Give me you nominations please!

Mac and Cheese

What's your favorite Mac & Cheese recipe? I've got a hankerin' for something good, cheesy and easy. Thanks!

What's your favorite "impressive but easy" recipe?

This is a great recipe! And definitely use Tillamook cheese. They don't use added enzymes like all the other branded cheeses do. No rbst either. Yes, I'm from Oregon. LOL!

Here's a great recipe for mac and cheese. No boiling required! from the NYT.

Creamy Macaroni and Cheese
Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

2 tablespoons butter
1 cup cottage cheese (not lowfat)
2 cups milk (not skim)
1 teaspoon dry mustard
Pinch cayenne
Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 pound sharp or extra-sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 pound elbow pasta, uncooked.

1. Heat oven to 375 degrees and position an oven rack in upper third of oven. Use 1 tablespoon butter to butter a 9-inch round or square baking pan.

2. In a blender, purée cottage cheese, milk, mustard, cayenne, nutmeg and salt and pepper together. Reserve 1/4 cup grated cheese for topping. In a large bowl, combine remaining grated cheese, milk mixture and uncooked pasta. Pour into prepared pan, cover tightly with foil and bake 30 minutes.

3. Uncover pan, stir gently, sprinkle with reserved cheese and dot with remaining tablespoon butter. Bake, uncovered, 30 minutes more, until browned. Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

What do you like about Valentines? And why Navarre #1?

Ultimate Restaurants: Portland

The winners are:

1. Le Pigeon
2. Apizza Scholls
3. Murata
4. Carlyle's
5. Park Kitchen

The people have spoken.

It's a good mix although I have to say that Carlyle's is completely out of its league here. It simply doesn't measure up. Next in line is Alba Osteria and I have to say I think that establishment has the goombas to compete on this list. I find it curious that there were very few white table establishments in the nominations. Where is Hurleys? What about Higgins? How come Nuestra Cocina was overlooked? I'll chalk it up to Chowhound's lack of penetration in the Portland Foodie market. I expected there to be plenty more opinions on here. Let's try in again in the spring. Cheers! J.

Oh come on, dude, wing it.

Ultimate Restaurants: Portland

Since I haven't voted myself, I'll weigh in.

1. Park Kitchen
2. Noble Rot
3. Nostrana
4. Le Pigeon
5. Paley's Place

The voting is now closed. I'll tabulate a little later.

le pigeon or simpatica?

Go for le Pigeon. It's more creative. Simpatica's charm is the experience of the long communal table but the food varies based on the chef and there are often guest chefs. But when you are in town, do not miss Park Kitchen.

Ultimate Restaurants: Portland

The Annual Chowhound Survey of Restaurants is expanding to Portland.

And Portland does needs to do a poll like this. We have a rich community of chef. How it Works: rate your top five, and only five restaurants in the Portland area that you would recommend to a friend visiting Portland, looking for a memorable dining experience. The scoring will go 5 points for a first place vote, 4 for a second place vote, 3 for a third place vote, 2 for a fourth place vote and one for a fifth place vote. The deadline for voting to be Dec. 20th. After that we will publish the results. If you’re confused, here is a link to the L.A. board’s version http://www.chowhound.com/topics/350619.

The Best Restaurant in Dallas?

By the way, what's wrong with brains, cheeks and tongues anyway?

The Best Restaurant in Dallas?

Being from a foodie city like Portland, we have pretty high standards but we loved York Street. I'll try some of these others another time. Thank you all!

The Best Restaurant in Dallas?

I'm planning a business trip to Dallas tomorrow. I have 5 managers I want to take out. Where should I take them? Aurora? York Street? Nana Grill? The lists I have found are confusing. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Where is the best butcher in PDX?

Lately I've been hankering for some pork belly. I might want to cure it myself. Where should I go? Phils? Viande? Anyone done any special orders in town? Know where to get a whole pig? Let me know. Thanks!
