Ft. Myers Trip Report -- 3/14

Anytime we are in Fort Myers or Naples, we always go to Randy's Fishmarket on the Tamiami Trail. Not fancy, but amazing fish and stone crabs (when in season.) The sauted tripletail sandwich is our favorite.

Kansas City recommendations please

Where are you staying? Have not been to Novel so cannot help you there. Have been to Rye (riff on Heartland food) for lunch and it was very good. If you like Extra Virgin, La Bodega is similar as it is small plates. Really like the ahi tuna and the shrimp wrapped in pancetta there - don't get the paella, it is consistently dry. If you like beef, we often take out of towners to Garozzos for bistecca modiga. All of these are in the Leawood - Overland Park area.

And if you are trying more barbecue - LC's is the best, hands-down. Burnt ends - heavenly.

Kansas City Food Itinerary

Appreciate the post - KC does have more than barbecue - even though ours is terrific. I agree with you about the chicken thighs at EV (from the longer post) but have had great meals there - KC can do "fancy."

Missouri

Sophia's and Murry's are my two favorites when I visit Columbia. I am not a fan of spicy, so I cannot help you there, but Sophia's has great small plates and Murry's is casual with good soups, sandwiches, salads, and desserts.

Girls weekend in Kansas City. HELP

Cafe Trio on the Plaza would be a good choice. They generally are decorated very festively at holiday time. Sit in the bar area and order small plates and fun drinks. Food is good and the people watching and atmosphere is great.

I-50 or I-70 area between Columbia and Kansas City

Glad that the Brick Front Grill is still open. I ate there years ago and was very impressed with my lunch and the desserts there. I tend to drive through Sedalia at odd times and it is always closed - happy that they are still in business.

I-50 or I-70 area between Columbia and Kansas City

Rocheport is about 15 miles west of Columbia - cute town with a few b&b's and antique shops. I like eating at Les Bourgeouis - very pretty views and good food.

Westport Bar and Cafe is a fun place - not terribly expensive.

Kansas City - Seeking a couple of restaurant recs for sightseeing trip

Dave is right - J Gilbert's and Bristol's are the best recs for steak and seafood near the OP Marriott. For some local ingredient places not too far away from Metcalf, check out Mission Farms. Room 39 is local ingredient, seasonal ingredients; Blanc's Burgers and Bottles specializes in fun twists on burgers and shakes. I have not eaten at Rye - nor will I due to a bad experience with the management - but others say that they have had good meals there - local ingredients and "heartland" food.

Any seafood Restaurant's near overland park?

I have never had a bad meal at the Bristol and they do list the origins of all of their fish.

Staub cocotte - dishwasher safe?

After reading comparisons, I just bought a Staub cocotte. Has anyone with one wash it frequently in the dishwasher? How has it held up? The instructions say that they can, but the non-stick may get damaged. Thanks for the help.

Kansas City BBQ & Other Restaurant Recommendations

I agree, have never had bbq to compare with the burnt ends at LC's - have been there in the past month and they are still great.

Jack Stack is more of a restaurant than a bbq place - if you go, get the beans.

I have not been terribly impressed by Spin, but we had a group from all of over the country staying in KC for the past three weeks, and they liked Spin so much, they went back three times.

Downtown KC business lunch choice

I really like Aixois but maybe Extra Virgin? Favorite with my lady-foodie friends.

Traveling 70W from Columbus to Denver, Where must we stop?

I seem to be constantly posting this on this board. Go to LC's!!! Get the burnt ends (I prefer the pork but the beef is great, too.) The ribs are also fantastic and the onion rings round out the experience. You will not be disappointed.

If you want to eat in Independence, Ophelia's food and atmosphere are lovely - service can be unprofessional, but trying hard. Only been there for dinner - I think they also have a Sunday brunch.

Red Door Grill, Leawood, KS

Went to Red Door Grill last week for lunch. The service was extremely accomodating and the food a mixed bag. I had the roasted tomato, mozzarella, and arugula salad. Great dressing and I loved the arugula, but the tomato did not seem roasted - instead it was almost like a large canned tomato had landed on my plate. Two people at the table had flatbreads - they both loved the crust and the person who ordered the one with sausage was very happy with the toppings. The person who ordered the artichoke flatbread wished that the artichoke was not chopped quite so fine as it lacked texture.

The chicken salad sandwich was pronounced bland but the house and the caesar salads were fresh and delicious.

No complaints from the one who ordered the steak sandwich and the teenager who ordered the chicken tenders from the child's menu said that they were great.

I would go back during happy hour and give it another try - there is an outside area for one of our nice weather evenings.

Eggs Benedict in KC

It is not the traditional benedict, but the steak benedict at Webster House in KC is really wonderful. It is a tenderloin on a potato pancake with spinach and hollandaise. Very rich but delicious when I had it there. I think brunch is only on Sunday.

Is there anything Chow-ish in Columbia, Missouri?

Going to Columbia this weekend and we will make our usual stop at Murry's - great catfish sandwich, wine list, and desserts. Very reasonably priced for the quality of food. We have had great meals at Sophia's - very nice atmosphere there, too.

About 15 miles west on I-70 is Les Bourgeouis. it is part of a winery - and the restaurant itself is upscale but not terribly fancy. Lovely views - I had great tuna there.Check the hours as they change seasonally. There is also an A-frame that is open seasonally. They serve wine, bread, and cheese and often have bands outside. Very fun. I have always enjoyed my trips to Columbia - nice town.

Actually - check out this link http://www.urbanspoon.com/cities/34/r... - the photo of the menu from urban spoon says that LC's is open on Sundays for Royals home games. Yay!

Recs for Tulsa and Oklahoma City?

Yes, Cool Greens is amazing. Very fresh and delicious. I wish I could remember the name, but when I was In OKC in the fall, I ate at an Italian restaurant that was in a buiding that had been a barbecue joint. It was run by a family that has restaurants in maybe the southern part of Oklahoma. Anyway, the food was really good - wish I knew the name so I could go back.

The barbecue and the onion rings are good at Jack Stacks - I really like the beans, too. If you have non-'cue eaters with you, the trout at Jack Stack's is really good, too.

On Main, near the Plaza is Glace which has amazing artisan ice cream. Salted pretzel is excellent.

Sounds great - thank you for posting. I am usually In Hermann for business during the daytime. Do you have any recommendations for weekday lunches there? I have eaten at Wings-a-Blazin and it was surprisingly good.

Saturday Night in St. Louis

Spend a night downtown this week and needed a place close for a business dinner. Chose Vin de Set because of its proximity to my hotel. All four of us were extremely pleased with the excellence of the food and the atmosphere. Our waiter was slow and indifferent, but we still had a memorable time, especially since between dinner and dessert, the tornado sirens went off and we were led downstairs to the basement wine cellar to wait out the storm.
I was told that the rooftop patio is amazing to be on when the weather is nice - great view of the city.

What's open late in Springfield (MO) on a Thursday night?

Try Kai Sushi in downtown Springfield. I believe the the kitchen is open until midnight. I have eaten there a couple of times and I really liked the sushi and enjoyed the atmosphere.

SPRINGFIELD, MO, just moved here...

Went to Bambu a couple of days ago and had the Pho with meatballs and rare beef. While the broth wasn't the best of the pho that I have ever had, it was flavorful and the meat, noodles, bean sprouts, and garnishes were very fresh. The staff was very friendly, as well. However, when I entered the restaurant, it smelled like stale smoke - I guess Springfield has not banned smoking in restaurants yet. I ordered the pho to go because of the odor. I will definitely go back and call ahead next time.
