General question - Kansas City, MO
Do you know where you will be staying? KC is pretty spread out - so location helps. If you can stay in a hotel on the Plaza, that would put you near a lot of good restaurants.
Fine Dining in Kansas City
If you are staying on the Plaza, then you have a few choices. For fine dining, Starkers and Chaz on the Plaza (in the Hotel Raphael) have great menus and food. I do not think either has a tasting menu. I love Cafe Trio for the drinks and atmosphere on the deck and in the bar, but the last two times I have been there, the entrees have been mediocre. Definitely still a great place for dirnks and appetizers, though. Jack Stack Barbecue has a location on the Plaza and even though there are people who will disagree with me, I like the barbecue a lot. LC's is great, too, but the building itself is a little scary. However, you cannot come to KC and not have barbecue.

Where are you staying? I assume you will have a car but knowing the neighborhood will help narrow choices.
Council Bluffs Ia
When travel on business to Council Bluffs, I just stay in Omaha. Have never found decent food in CB.
Drunken Fish. - STL
Thanks for the review - I am in St Louis a great deal for business. Was this the one in the Westport Plaza?
Brunch at Webster House KC or Lidia's?
Thanks for the reply - I checked out the menu and it does look good - will definitely try it - even it is not for this occasion.
One night in Overland Park, KS
You might try Jack Stack. Gates may be closed because of Easter - Jack Stack is very good barbecue.
Brunch at Webster House KC or Lidia's?
I am going to a Sunday matinee at the Kauffman and cannot decide whether brunch at Lidia's or the Webster House is a better choice for food. The location of the Webster House is definitely more convenient but the menu is pretty simple. Has anyone had brunch there? What did you think?
Weigh in on Lidia's, too if you like.
Does anyone know of a good Cuban place in KC or Omaha?
I grew up in South Florida and love Cuba food. In Kansas City, I like El Porton - not a fancy place, but very good black beans and ride and roast pork. It is in Overland Park.
I have eaten at Gusto in the LaVista area of Omaha and was not impressed. Food was lackluster, as was the service even though the restaurant was pretty much empty.
Kansas City Restaurant Week
I am thinking of La Bodega and Tannin. Maybe Cafe Trio since it is one of my favorite places.
Missouri KC to Springfield
This is probably late but Koehn's bakery and sub shop in Butler is a great local place with great, fresh-tasting sandwiches.
2 Nights in Kansas City OCT 1-2.
Definitely do the American Royal BBQ contest - lots of fun and great barbecue. While some will disagree with me - I like Jack Stack's bbq a lot and there is a location on the Plaza. Are you talking about Plaza III? I am not such a fan - but I am not a guy, either. Have fun.
Review: La Bodega - Kansas City
I have been to both locations and prefer Leawood - I always feel hot in the KC location. The last time I was there we had the shrimp dish and the tuna dish mentioned above. I really enjoyed them both - the tuna was wonderful and the shrimp was very good. I prefer the scallops that are prepared similarly to the shrimp - to me that was a better flavor combination. I also love the house salad - so fresh and the greens and goat cheese are a nice contrast to most of the tapas. The filet with blue cheese is also delicious.
Glace open in Leawood!
Read in the Pitch today that Christopher Elbow opened a second Glace location in Leawood - it is in the plaza on 119th and Roe. Cannot wait to go!
KC Area - Fried Chicken
Yes, the Peachtree in Lee's Summit is closed.

Cafe Trio - KC
My SO and I went to Cafe Trio last night for the first time and were very impressed. We both ordered specials - they are doing a Tour de France inspired menu so the specials were French inspired. The house salad that came with my meal was wonderful - nut encrusted chevre on mixed greens with pistachios and a citrus vinaigrette. SO just wanted mixed greens and was cheerfully accomodated.
My entree was a grilled whole sea bass stuffed with lemon slices and rosemary. It was beautifully presented with a lemony sauce and yellow tomatoes. Delicious. SO's entree was grilled duck breast with a cherry sauce. The breast was a perfectly cooked medium rare. Both entrees were accompanied by artichoke hearts and haricots vertes.
We sat in the lounge so we had great people-watching of a bachelorette party next to us, the very animinated and hot crowd on their patio and the pedestrian traffic on the plaza. Very friendly and fun server. We will go back soon to try their regular menu.
Cedar Rapids
To me, this is more of a lunch place, but Aladdin is very good. I have been there twice ( I travel to CR on business a couple of times a year) - the first time was wonderful, the second time just good, but still nice to have Middle Eastern food as a choice.
KC: how much do you spend on food/ month?
The one near Leawood was originally a Wild Oats market. When Whole Foods bought WO, they kept the location. When I lived in temporary housing in Leawood, that store was the only place I bought groceries. Expensive, but fun.
Fave summertime treats--KC
Read in the Pitch that Jonathan Justus may open a restaurant downtown so you might just get your wish. Cannot get the hyperlink to work.

Top Chef Masters Season 3, Episode 5 (Spoilers)
I agree with all of the assessments of Restaurant Girl - she has so little credibility and her attitude makes me wonder each time if I am watching a"Housewives" show by mistake. Get her off and replace her with a respectable judge.
Duck in Kansas City
Any place in KC to buy fresh duck? Would like to try and grill it at home. Thanks.
Barbecue in the Vanderbilt area
I posted earlier about a casual place for dinner near the Wildhorse and got a couple of great suggestions. I also am looking for a barbecue place for lunch in the Vanderbilt area. I have read that there is a Hog Heaven and a scary place behind a pizza hut. Is Hog Heaven good? Are there other places in the Vanderbilt area that have great barbecue? I am bringing a group of people from all over the Midwest and Alabama to Nashville, but at least 4 of us are from KC, so we appreciate good 'q'. Any recs?

Nashville downtown near Wild Horse
I am having a meeting in Nashville and would like to find a fun, casual, non- chain restaurant near the Wild Horse Saloon. There will be about 15 in our group - any suggestions? We need a place that serves alcohol.
El Porton Cafe--Leawood KS (JoCo)
I got takeout last week from El Porton - had the lechon asada (roast pork) with black beans and rice. No plantains came with my order which was disappointing but the pork and the black beans were absolutely delicious. The pork was really flavorful and juicy - totally like the great Cuban food I had living in South Florida. I also got a cafe con leche - fantastic.
El Porton Cafe--Leawood KS (JoCo)
Thanks for the post! I am looking forward to trying it.
Aladdin in Cedar Rapids
I was in Cedar Rapids for business yesterday and had lunch at Aladdin Restaurant and was very impressed. The waitress brought us complimentary lentil soup that was delicious (and I generally do not like lentil soup.) I had the chicken schwarma combo - the chicken was seasoned extremely well and it came with a very fresh chopped salad.
My colleague who is not an adventurous eater but agreed to Aladdin to humor me, had the chicken gyro which he said was great and cleaned his plate.
Really delicious, homemade tasting food, and a very personable waitress made this a great experience. I am going back next time I go to CR.

Westport Cafe and Bar
We had a great time at West Cafe on Friday night. I enjoyed my champagne cocktail(s) and we shared arugula salad, grilled octopus, duck confit, and the chocolate ganache dessert. The salad dressing tasted like what I had in Paris, the grilled octopus was amazing (as were the the potatoes and sausage that came with it.) The duck confit terrine seemed dry at first, but with the accompaniments, especially the sauteed mushrooms, the flavor seemed to intensify. The chocolate ganache is really rich and intense which is my idea of a perfect chocolate dessert. The service was not polished, but it was very friendly. A great find.
