Italian NYC with teens

Lupa can be a joke, their sides are miniscule and their waitstaff pretentious. The kitchen is also very inflexible. The pastas are good and their wine list is very fair, but there are a lot more comfortable Italian restaurants in NY that make you feel that they are doing you a favor serving you.

Torrisi Italian Specialties

Agree on all counts, but want to add that the lasagna ia light as a feather and has a noodle that Michael Romano would envy. The prochutto, mozzerela & peppers on the Parisi roll was woofed down.

Papaya King or Gray's Papaya...

In the old days, pre-Poulos being bought out, Papaya King was the best. Snappy dog, great bun & they had the store on 86th & a block or so up Third Ave on the other side of the street. Since the buyout, the dogs have lost a lot of their snap & the buns are not as frsh. Gray's have had a little more continuity and still remain the same and what was a bit below Papaya King is now a bit better.

Bill's Bar & Burger: OMG I Agree with Alan Richman (Sort Of)

The Burger at Bill's is very good. It was moist & dripping. We asked for it to be made a little less than done & it was pink and delicious. hated the fries, loved the fried veggis & the shake was tasty. the hotdog was too salty & tasted like Hebrew National ( Hatfield Farms I think they said), but the bun was good until it disintergrated under the weight of the saurkraut & relish.

Pizza in Little Italy and other food questions

Van Leeuwen is on Greene between Prince & Spring and is most definitely worth it. Pass on Papa Beards, try any Momofuku (David Chang's) Zabar's is great too, but not for eating there. Great appliances too! Go to Sullivan Street for bread & room temperature pizza unbelievable. Taim on 22 Waverly for the best falafel in NYC. Dinosaur BBQ, just voted best BBQ in USA last weekend by Good Morning America viewers.

Hundred Acres, Delicatessen, or neither?

Skip both & go to Shorty's, Schillers, or FivePoints. Hundred Acres isn't there yet (maybe soon) and Delicatessen is amateur night in Dixie. Everything looks & sounds better from the Food (sounds nice, but no execution and poor preparation), Ambiance (looks good, but uncomfortable), & service (clueless the movie). The three recommendations do it right.

From Maine to New York--dinner?

We are leaving Bridgton, Maine about 5 PM & driving South to NY. We should be going through MA & be in N. CT around 7:30 or 8:00 PM. So if there is any suggestions because it is on a Sunday night and we are looking for a good, but quick bite off a major highway, either 95, 84, 90, 91, etc. Please share. The idea is quic &,good so we can get back to NYC before 11:00 PM.

BLT Burger is really good & has good onion rings too. Both Blue Smoke & Dinosaur BBQ have very good burgers too. The Dinosaur also has some of the best sliders around. They also have brisket & pork slders, yum....

Insomnia Cookies- Mini Review

We bought 6 cookies last week at the store and with the exception of the Macadamia cookie, the rest were dry, stale & flavorless. The Macadamia was fresh at least, but with little flavor. Stop & Shop has better cookies...this francise is for the 4 AM pot-smoker.

I bought The Farm on Adderley, Ditmas Park

We ate last night at The Farm & the food was delicious. The pork chop was dense, tender & delicious. It came with sweet potato gnocchi, kale & a parmesan sauce that was great. My wife had the sea bass, topped with roasted red peppers, raisins & something else. She could not rave enough on how tasty it was. The hanger steak with spinach, smashed potatoes was very tasty, but the spinach was a bit bitter. The home made focaccia with seasoned olive oil was first rate. The owner Gary brought over a few french fries after I told him that I was told that they were supposed to be great & they do live up to their reputation. Seved with a curry mayo, they are salty & very flavorful. I know they are french fries & not truffles, but they do sing. The upside-down chocolate banana cake with coconut sorbet is very good too. A nice list of beers.

First visit to Katz's

GO TO ARTIE'S ON THE UPPER WESTSIDE! SERIOUSLY, I WENT TO KAT'S TWO WEEKS AGO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS & THERE WAS MORE SALT IN THE PASTRAMI & CORNED BEEF THAN THE BONNIVILE SALT FLATS! THE CB WAS SO GRAINY THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS FROM NEBRASKA. HAND CUT CRAP! GO TO ARTIE"S THE STUFF IS AS TENDER AS A BABY"S BOTTOM & I AM NOT A SCHILL, I DON"T LIKE THE CARNIGIE OR STAGE EITHER.

Has anybody been to FIORINI yet?

Thanks for the feedback. The menu didn't look overly pricey. The veal parm says $24? A lot of other blogs say the portions are VERY tiny.

Best Grocery Stores in Manhattan

We shop at Zabar's, Fairway, Whole Foods, Chelsea Market, and the Greenmarket. All have their strong points & all have their minuses...
Zabar's has great cheese selection at a fraction of Fairway or Murray's. They also have a far superior deli counter. Zabar's onion rolls, croisaints are terrific. Fairway's veggies can be subpar and borderline fresh, Chelsea Market's veggis & fruits are very good & is the next best to the Greenmarket. Fairway cannot be beat for prime meats as far as prices are concerned, Citerella's quality is equal or better, but the prices are higher, no Lobel's, but what is that high. The olive oil'sd at Fairway is a hair cheaper for regular EVO, but they have some higher priced specialty oils that are pretty good buys. The Italian foods store in Chelsea Market is a bit of a rip, Teitel Brothers on Arthur Ave. in the Bronx is as good as it gets for Reggiano Parm & Prochut de Parma. & they have an oil that is really good too with a price to match. If you need an appliance for the kitchen or house Zabar's prices can't be beat.
