We are staying on Camano Island for a week in August. We will have a cottage and will cook some meals, but would like to eat out, too. Any recommendations for restaurants and/or groceries, farmers' markets? |

I ate at Gascogne for dinner a few months ago and was very disappointed. Really mediocre food. The ambience and service were good, though. |

72nd and Amsterdam- Just Moved In I second Hummus Place. They don't serve too much more than hummus, but it's ultra fresh, inexpensive, with friendly service. My husband, 6 year old daughter and I have been going there every week. It's kind of addictive! |

Where to Eat? -- Boreum Hill / Cobble Hill / Carroll Gardens We had a semi-disappointing meal at Fragole tonight. The rigatoni firenze was wonderful as was the lasagna. My husband ordered a special of risotto with clams, asparagus and peas. It was full of little and big pieces of clam shells- really inedible and potentially dangerous. The owner?/manager? offered to re-make it, and the 2nd portion was also full of little pieces of shells. They seemed somewhat sorry that the dish was bad, but the management's response was really lukewarm. They asked if he wanted to order something else, but by this time we were really ready to leave since my daughter and I had finished long ago. We would have expected more of an apology, maybe a gratis dessert, or even a "Merry Christmas." We suggested they might want to take the special off the menu because someone might break a tooth, but it was still there when we walked by a while later. Even though a couple of the dishes were very good, we won't go back because of the indifferent service. |

I think we were at King Eider's on the same night! We spent the week in the Damariscotta area and it was our only bad meal. The oysters, though tasty, were full of shells. The crab cakes were all breading, the chicken wings tasted off, the seafood dumplings were awful, and worst of all was the Caesar salad - brown, old lettuce that actually smelled bad. When we spoke to the manager, he was indifferent. Don't go, except maybe for drinks. On the other hand, we loved the Bristol Diner for really good breakfast and lunch with high quality ingredients. It's owned by a young couple and it's an old-fashioned place where the locals go. We also liked Pemaquid Co-op, Round Pond and Shaw's for lobsters. Paco's Tacos is a terrific Mexican place on Main St. in Damariscotta. Really good fish tacos. The whole Pemaquid peninsula is a fantastic place to spend a week. It seems less touristy than a lot of other parts of Maine and except for that one bad meal, the food was consistently excellent. We stopped at Red's Eats in Wiscasset for the famous lobster roll. It was good, but not worth the hour wait. Best lobster roll we've ever had was at Popponesset Country Club in Mashpee, MA. Unbelievably huge and delicious. |
