My Place - Canadian Pub in BWV

I went last night for dinner. If they stay this good, they'll be the best restaurant in Bloor West Village. I've lived here two years and we needed this. There's nothing like it in the area. The ribeye steak was cooked a perfect rare, thoroughly seasoned. Even the side veg of chard and red carrots were a pleasure. The apple pandowdy is insane, huge too. The portions are very generous.

The only disappointment was their take on the Caesar salad: "garlic bomb" or something like that. Cool idea but lacking in flavour. A better dressing would fix that right away.

This place is serious. I'll be back for pints and jazz night. I really hope people patronize and make it successful. It's either that or keep putting up with Sharkey's.

Has my pasta dough gone bad?

I made it Wednesday night, now it's Friday night. The dough's noticeably darker, with some faint black spots throughout, almost like black pepper (although I included none while making it). It doesn't smell bad, it just smells like raw dough typically does. But the shade and the spots have me wondering: should I eat this? It's only been two days.

The Painted Elephant (Indian in Oakville)

Man, get out to this place. Same folks who run Amaya and Bread Bar. A welcome alternative to some of the stale options on the Lakeshore strip. Strong examples everywhere: butter chicken, curried cauliflower, biryani, and of course the naan. Nice waitstaff too. Here's hoping they survive in such an underpatronized part of town.

A good selection of olives

When I say sketchy olive bar, I mean ones that look sloppy, unkept, or less than fresh. I find this covers a lot of them, and tend to think the whole concept needs to be reconsidered.

If anything, I'm just looking for more variety. There must be more than four olives out there. In fact I'm sure of it, since many of my cookbooks call for them. (Picholine, Ligurian, etc).

A good selection of olives

Most places I check have the same bland selection of green/black/kalamata, that or a sketchy olive bar with all sorts of seasonings I could do without.

Where's the place to go for a good selection of gourmet olives? I know of places like Cheese Boutique and The Olive Pit, but I'm also wondering if there's something a bit more mid-range to scope out.

Thanks.

Who's got the best pie?

I haven't been to Wanda's yet, but want to know who else in Toronto has a stellar pie of any sort. The variety of pie doesn't matter, but it does have to be sweet or fruit-based.

Thanks.

Big Ragu is out of business already?

Depressing. Maybe they're moving to a new location? Last time I was there, Carmen implied they were doing well. You never know, though.

Downtown Buffalo

I'm driving down from Toronto for a show at the Town Ballroom, which is apparently located right in Buffalo's downtown. Are there are any recommendations for where to eat within walking distance of the venue? It's at 681 Main St.

Looking for something on the cheap and casual side of things, nothing fancy.

Thanks in advance.

Yet another Caplansky's review

Love the place, but I'm a bit leery over this ambitious talk of expanding the menu. The worry is that juggling too many efforts will make the whole enterprise suffer, and that would be a shame. We've seen it before with other joints trying to do too much, eventually straying from what made them remarkable.

new deli at College & Clinton

It's in the Monach Tavern, which is on the southwest corner of Henderson and Clinton. You have to go up a flight of stairs to the 2nd floor, where the bar is located. There's a Caplansky's sign outside near the entrance. It's also right next door to San Francesco Foods, which is a little more noticeable.

Support this man! Downtown has no equal. Bolder than Pancer's, on par with Schwartz's, kills Katz's. The fries were a bit salty but whatever. He's nailed the sandwich and that's what matters. Get a pint from the bar and complete the experience.

Big pails of fresh berries

I figured it wouldn't be cheap, but hopefully it'd be a bit less than buying individual pints in the city. Thanks for the link.

No wooden baskets, disappointing. Maybe I'll bring one along to perpetuate the myth, like you said.

Big pails of fresh berries

Where can I find these? I know they exist, I saw them on television once. Those wooden Foodland Ontario baskets full of blueberries and raspberries, easily a few pounds or so.

I've only seen berries by the pint here in Toronto, so I'm assuming I'd have to travel somewhere rural? That's fine, just tell me where to go once the season gets started.

Thanks.

Best Indian in TO

Strange, I ate there last summer and found it underwhelming and overpriced. The naan was great, but also the best part of the meal.

Maybe they've improved?

What's the story on these guys? I've passed by a few times but never when they're open. I don't hear them cited alongside the more reputable names, so I'm a bit suspicious.

Any experiences, good or bad, all appreciated.

Ramps?? Am I too late?

Found some at Whole Foods (Hazelton Lanes) for 2.99 a bunch.

Also saw some at Organics on Bloor.

Least terrible dish at Spring Rolls?

I find it more sweet and syrupy than greasy, hence the Manchu reference. I can't really explain its appeal. Candy coated meat bites? I don't know.

And to echo what others have said, I've found nothing wrong with the spring rolls themselves.

It may seem borrowed from Manchu Wok, but I've enjoyed the Tango Mango Chicken in the past.

Basque Cuisine

Pain Perdu on St Clair has a lot of Basque emphasis, including a big Basque flag draped above the cash.

In terms of food, I know they sell gateaux Basque, not sure what else. Here's the full menu: http://www.painperdu.com/menu.html

Gordon Ramsay to open in Toronto?

"While Ramsay has said the property is unlikely to be a hotel, he raved about a certain view in Toronto."

With Scaramouche moving, it's the first place I thought of.

Fish and Chips in Miss/Oakville

There was a place in Streetsville I loved, can't remember what it's called. Someone help me out.

Mache greens (aka 'corn salad', 'lamb's lettuce', etc)

Earthbound Farms sells mache in two ways: alone or in a mix with raddichio and frisee (what redearth mentioned). I recently bought the latter, since Sobey's weren't selling the solo version. Thankfully it's mostly mache.

How about that. Found a bin of the mixed mache at a nearby Sobeys. Thanks to everyone for being far nicer than I deserved.

Longo's is less of a surprise. I've found all sorts of creative produce there, like puntarelle of all things.

Who carries this? I've checked Whole Foods and Harvest Wagon in past seasons without any luck. A less expensive grocer would be great.

Thanks.

Ace Bakery sold for presumable millions (Toronto/GTA)

http://www.thestar.com/living/article...

Interesting, although it makes sense considering their enthusiastic expansion in the past few years. I've always defended them as the best "major label" bakery in the GTA, but admit I fear for the future if they're giving up control. With those two at the helm, the quality didn't really suffer, save some crisping issues easily solved with a home oven. They always insisted on using the same grade of flours, the same hand-held approach whenever possible. I think they understood this because they understood good bread.

It's the boogeyman of any successful business: maintaining quality on an expanding scale. One could argue that in selling the company, they are no longer targeting the artisan bread buyer, but rather the less choosy supermarket mom. As a member of the former group, it's disappointing, but thankfully there are other options...

Thoughts?

Good casual dining in Southwest Mississauga?

Looking for something reliable in Clarkson, Port Credit, even up near Dundas and Erin Mills is fine. Basically the area somewhat adjacent to Oakville. Any cuisine is fine, though European/Continental is the preference. Kinda sick of Oakville's scene, looking for something different.

Thanks in advance.

mississauga....quick and tasty

Souvlaki Hut on Lakeshore in Clarkson. On a pita or as part of a broader dinner, it's all worth it. I wouldn't recommend the dinner if you're still on the job, though. It's a ton of food and can be paralyzing if you finish it all.
