Must Eats in Doha?

Anyone traveling to Doha can look up Time Out Doha for local listings and reviews. PS. Don't go looking for "Qatari" food because the locals don't go out to eat their food; the best cooks are found at home. You can find good Arab (Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi, etc.) and Persian food around town, as well as Western chains (both upmarket and fastfood can be found easily). http://www.timeoutdoha.com/restaurants

There's a Kosher-Vegeterian Dim Sum place in Chinatown in New York, but the food was hideously awful. It dripped of grease and tasted like nothing.

Saudi Arabia cuisine

I really doubt you're going to find an authentic Saudi restaurant anywhere in the States, much less LA. I lived in the Gulf too and I miss the food. Your best bet might be to find a book that's a collection of recipes from Saudi and hope that your pizza thing is in there.

One way to avoid DEAD COW might be to check prepackaged foods for the OU (kosher) symbol. OU-P means there's no DEAD COW or DAIRY matter in there, while OU-D means there's dairy but no DEAD COW. A K symbol works the same way.

Menupages can be a little annoying, because everyone gives gushing reviews to every restaurant (unless the waiter did something egregious.) That makes it hard to decide if the place is actually worth going to.

Baking books

What about the Fannie Farmer baking book? My friend's mom uses it and always makes fantastic desserts. I guess it is a little old school, but it works. You can probably find a really cheap paperback copy somewhere.

Beyond Uncle Ben's

Two comments. The first is that Uncle Ben's is lousy rice, and is really, really different from other long grain rice like basmati or jasmine. The second is that many people traditionally "wash" long grain rice before its cooked. Soaking it in water, rinsing and resoaking gets rid of a lot of the starch. That keeps the grains from sticking to each other.

Pasta e Fagioli

I was worried it would turn out a bit bland for my taste, so I added a few more cloves of garlic, a 1/4 of a teaspon of harissa or chilli paste in with the tomato, celery (because it was taking up room in my fridge), and used broth instead of water. It's a nice basic recipe and really warmed up my guests.

Is it just me or has Weia Teia's cooking gone downhill? The last few times I ate there the fish was either overdone or old (so old it gives off that gross fishy smell/taste even when cooked.)

Oddly enough the best hot dog I've ever tried is Emborg's Spicy kind (they're Danish I believe.) If someone can tell me where to find them in the States, they'll be my hero.
