Best Oyster Bar in Biloxi..............

Is this a question or a statement? Do you agree? I have not had oysters at the fillingstation, shoot, I didnt even know they served food, I thought it was just a bar...most people I know go there late to drink and see local bands.

Who Has Best BBQ In South MS..............

No one that I have found...it's all just blah so far!

The Shed is OK, but not "the best" - The best Q I have had since moving back to the Coast from the land of Q (Bham) was homemade.

I hope someone else has a more uplifting suggestion, b/c I would love to try some proper Q.

Looking for a Good Dinner in Biloxi

Yeah not so much anymore huh :-) I think the list has shortened a lot!

You can always go to Jazzeppi's in Biloxi, it is very close. I havent heard anything recently, but in the past I have heard only good things.

The places in OS are pretty close, and Phoenicia comes highly recomended from what I have read.

Who has the Best Po-Boys in South Mississippi?

I think the one on Pass is no longer Fayards, I think someone bought it, I know the name changed...I ate at the one on Deadux Rd a ton of times years back...

I eat at the one on Popps Ferry all the time and get the goods :-)...usually the same 2 ladies every day, and the same younger lady at the register. I mean it's no MaryMahoney's Cafe (weep...) but I think they are suprisingly great for a gas station poboy!

Who has the Best Po-Boys in South Mississippi?

I really like the poboys at Fayards BP, there are several locations. I eat at the one on Popps Ferry Rd regularly. They can press or not. The Shrimp and Oyster are good, but the special ones IMO are the crabmeat (I like mine with cheese...and hotsauce of course!) and the roast beef and gravy. I prefer them pressed btw, but either way they are good.

Birmingham, AL - Breakfast / Brunch Options (in downtown area) ??

Original Pancake House is very good IMO. But my standard go to breakfast spot in Bham is VRichards...Nueske's bacon mmmmm!!! And for just coffee and a pastry O'Kafes in PepperPlace.

Birmingham Getting a FLIP BURGER

I have been to the one in Atlante (in late June) and it was awesome. We sat at the chefs bar...the window to the kitchen with a bar...and it was really cool to watch him add the liquid nitrogen to the gazpacho. The food was great, and really an experience. I promise FLIP in NOTHING like anything in Bham.

Galatoire's - First time...Hazlehurst, you listening?

I live in Gulfport MS and came into NO this weekend mainly to have a few great meals. August was booked for Saturday night, so we went with Galatoire's as a back up. We were not dissapointed. The meal and service were both great! We sat upstairs and had a great meal and experience. I really enjoyed the Pomano! I just wanted to report back to the thread that is largely responsible for my decision to go with Galatoire's! Thanks CHers! Special thanks to Monch and Hazelhurst!

We went to eat at Back Bay on Friday. It was really good. The only negative was that I thought the breading on the fried food did have a bit of a heavy hand.

We had the green tomatoes w/ shrimp and crawfish and a creamy sauce for an appetizer, and my wife had grilled shrimp and seafood cakes for her entree and I had the fried seafood platter, that also included a seafood cake that had beed breaded and fried.

I think the sauce from the appetizer and the seafood cakes were the stars, but overall a very good meal.

Gulfport Ms: Blowfly Inn

Yes, it is a great casual dining spot. The food is really good, and the view is even better now. It is no longer BYOB, and it gets very crowded on the weekends! But I still love it!

And I 2nd the Blow Fly...I ate there this week and everything was great except the soup/gumbo, I didn't have them personally, but others at the table said they were just ok.

I hate that they didn't reopen the Cafe! I found that out the hard way...in person standing on the empty patio scratching my head. But I will need to go back when I am dressed for the dining room :-)

RE: Authentic Tacos
I have noticed in the past few days that there is an explosion of Taquerias since I moved away...I think I will have no problem finding good carnitas and al pastor. I will report back as I try them out, or maybe just start a new thread if this one gets busy.

Birmingham Cheesehounds

I recently picked up a soft goat's milk cheese from V Richards. I cant remember the name...Li Capprini or something like that, but I am SURE I butchered that....it was on the Left side in the front, and comes portioned from the cheese maker in about 8oz portions. It has a 1/2 slice of black truffle in the middle. Creamy, smooth, garlicky, earthy, and delicious!

On a sad note, I have moved away from the Ham, and now live in So MS, and my cheese selection has been reduced to Kraft American and Cheddar. Tear ;-(

MS Gulf Coast

Here are a few thoughts on some places that I have been to in the last few month or so:

Harbor View Café, now in Long Beach, was excellent for brunch last week.

Steve's Marina, Gulfport, meh... it was ok both times I went, but a little over priced IMO and some diners with me had poor experiences.

Lil Ray's, Gulfport, always a winner in my book!

High Cotton, Gulfport, I can't really put my finger on it, but I am not overly impressed. Good, but not great.

Bop's in D'Iberville, frozen custard, YUMMY!

Which Which? in D'Iberville as well, pretty tasty, lots of options for your sandwich.

Chef Scott's in Ocean Springs, had a great time, very good modernized sushi options, as well as standard choices, will go back for sure.

I've had poboys from Ben's Deli and Fayard's, both very good, Fayard's gets the edge from me.

Well I moved to Bham after Katrina, and became a real chowhound eating my way through the city...what a great few years it was, and in no way could I say that I exhausted everything there, but I put a significant dent for sure.

Now I'm back to the Gulfport/Biloxi area and want to get a thread going with some suggestions from coastal hounds.

A few things to get us started…any new/great restaurants on the coast?

Best authentic tacos (carnitas, al pastor, carne asada, etc) on the coast? I noticed that Los Tres Amigos has them.

Best locally owned pizza? (Currently Brooklyn’s is leading the category)

Good authentic ethnic food…Thai, Indian, Authentic Chinese, etc? (Not expecting much here, but thought I would ask)

BBQ? The Shed is good, but what else is out there?

Fine dining outside of the Casinos, Jazzeppi's and Vrazels? I have heard good things about the Half Shell Oyster House in Gulfport?

Sushi?

Seafood? (Fried, Griled, Poboys, Pasta Dishes etc)

Any other thoughts/suggestions?

I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions!

White Cap, Biloxi, MS

White Cap, I'm pretty sure it was in the Gulfport Harbor before Katrina, re-opened a few weeks back on 90 in Gulfport near Courthouse Rd.

Birmingham Chocolate

Re - SoHo Sweets - I would guess they make their own, but I am not sure. I am pretty sure they make their IceCream or Gelato and Cheesecake, so I would guess they make the truffles.

I know VRichards has a good selection of bars at the front, but I am not sure on the other places.

I would check out WF and that other place BigDaddy suggested since they are next to eachother, and not TOO far from SoHo Sweets either.

Birmingham Chocolate

Lots of places really. A few that come to mind - VRichards, Whole Foods, and The Fresh Market.

One place that is great is SoHo Sweets...great truffles IMO.

Is there anything in particular you are looking for?

Birmingham Cheesehounds

My only experience with local cheese is what I pick up at Pepper Place market. They have had local goat cheese since I started going about 4 years ago. It is tangy and good. I like a bit on some toasted crusty bread with some honey for desert. I have also used it as part of a stuffing (squash blossoms).

This year a new cheese has arrived as well. It is from Wright Dairy in Alexandria (Anniston Al area)...I have some in the fridge. They have had quite a few different types of cheese so far, maybe 5 or 6 selections. All raw cow's milk cheese :-) They have a web site too. http://www.wrightdairy.com/

I consider myself a bit of a cheesehound, and I will greatly miss the cheese counter at Tria. I usually go to VRichards for cheese now, and feel satisfied by the quality, service, and selection. (I have an aversion to Whole Foods, and I have not been there enough to say anything about there cheese, but I am sure it would be fine

)

This is clearly just going to be a collection of my thoughts on the cheese scene in the Ham...sorry for the ramble ;-)

Atlanta Bday Dinner Recs

I went to H&F for my BDay dinner a few weeks back 6/20 and had an amazing experience! I hear the menu is similar to Abattoir, and since you are going there, that would be the only downside. And I would think that for a late dinner the whole no reservations issue wouldnt be much of an issue at all. At about 930 on Saturday we waited maybe 10 minutes. And I think it will be plenty casual, lots of folks wearing jeans there when I went. (mostly with nice shirts and dress shoes, but jeans non the less)

Have fun!

Searching for decent wings in Birmingham

I don't really do flavored wings, but when I have a hankerin for hotwings I go to On Tap. They have flavored ones, but I always get Scorcher. The wings are of good size and cooked properly, they have a pretty good beer slection, and they are served with your choice of ranch or blue cheese. Check em out.
