Sripraphai overrated
Thanks for the recommendations! I've tried Chao Thai and liked it. Not the best Crispy pork w/ Chinese broccoli, but great noodle dishes. Will try the others.

Chao Thai
85-03 Whitney Ave, Queens, NY 11373
Sripraphai overrated
I've eaten there a few times and have never felt wowed. Between me and my friend, we had masaman curry with chicken, yellow curry with also chicken, saute Chinese broccoli with crispy pork, and drunken noodles with beef. I didn't care for the masaman at all, sweet and watery, tasted like curry, rubbery chicken, no subtle flavor at all. Broccoli with pork was OK but not outstanding. The other two dishes were spicy but mediocre as well. Everything was just blah. Can someone recommend some real Thai restaurants?!! Thanks!
Yummy chinese takeout near MSG
38th St. bet. 7th & 8th aves. I forget the name but all the Chinese people who work in the factories nearby go there.
New Wine Bar in Sunnyside
Anyone been yet? I'm surprised that there are no posts here yet on Claret. Went there last night to ring in the new year with a friend and had a pleasant time. I ordered the prosecco, my friend a Riesling, and some Serrano ham and Italian Fontina cheese (both $3 each.) The prosecco was pricey at $11 but very good, and we were happy with the platter of ham & cheese which came with bread, almonds and some sweet fruit paste. All in all, we enjoyed everything and the place itself, a welcome addition to the otherwise drab dining/drinking scene in the nabe, except for Quaint and Bliss.
over ripe bananas
Hmm, I wondered that myself one time. Probably a bad idea though. Better yet, make a half loaf of banana bread. I use Fannie Farmer's recipe and everyone in my family loves it! Just halve the recipe though if you've only one banana. I usually use a little less sugar especially if the banana's really ripe. I think FF tends to be heavyhanded with sugar.
Tout Va Bien?
DON'T GO THERE! Bad food and depressing ambience. Yes, the people who work there are French but the food is not the French food I know. The steak I had was a weird cut of beef, kinda tough, and the fries were clearly industrially pre-frozen and tasteless. The prix fixe was by-the-number fare, nothing stellar at all. Even the bread was lousy. Tourist trap!
Zabb Thai - first time visit
Can someone tell me the exact address for the "original" Zabb on Roosevelt? Thanks! I'm dying to try their crispy pork w/Chinese broccoli. The version at Sri is so-so.
Malay Cafe -- Not worth it
Just had a takeout meal from Malay Cafe in Woodside. Should have saved my $$. Had the Chinese broccoli with crispy pork, curry noodle soup with beef and the roti. The only thing decent was the beef which was quite tender. My suspicions seemed correct: The people running the place are Chinese people pretending to cook Thai/Malay. They're probably the same folks who closed the Chinese joint at the exact same address a while back. They've no idea what they're doing. The pork was just plain roast pork, not at all deep fried and crispy like that at Sripraphai. And the dish was dry, not a hint of any sauce at all, bland, bland, bland. Both the curry soup and the curry dip that came with the roti was the exact same thing, which would have been OK if there was any complicity in the broth. Ugh, was hoping this place would at least give Sri a run for their money, alas, no such luck.
2nd Ave Deli--what am I missing?
Thanks for all your replies. I'll definitely give Sarge a try and go back to Katz for a long overdue revisit.
13 Mott Street - Noodle Village
I like the wonton noodle soup at Wonton Garden on Mott, across from Big Wong. Haven't tried NY Noodletown but liked their congee there a while back.
Yvonne Yvonne - Jamaican truck
Thanks for the goat report. For some reason, a lot of Carib places make their curried goat sort of salty and perhaps with MSG in it. Nothing like down on the islands... There is a place on 34th St. bet. 7th & 8th Ave in this arcade that makes it OK but still not the best. I'll actually be going to Trinidad/Tobago this Nov. Mmmm, can't wait!!!
2nd Ave Deli--what am I missing?
I had a pastrami sandwich and a kasha knish to take out yesterday. Extremely disappointing, expensive and mediocre fare. I'd ordered the pastrami fatty and still it wasn't anything outstanding, the meat was not as tender as it should have been, it tasted just like something I'd get at any deli. And the knish was hard and crusty and sort of dry. All that for $20. Never again!
Yvonne Yvonne - Jamaican truck
Is the truck there all day? I'd love to try their curried goat, my fav Carib grub. And do they have rotis?
stuffed lotus leaves
You mean those Chinese things that weigh a ton, stuffed with sticky rice and meats? You could try that grocery store on Roosevelt Av @ 57th St or any of the supermarkets in Elmhurst.
Bliss Bistro in Sunnyside - consistently mediocre
Bliss used to have the best roast chicken but other entrees never wowed me. Fried calamari was always greasy and floppy. Last few times I went the roasted fish (sole) was good though a bit over-salted. Cassoulet was lousy; they shouldn't try French cuisine if they couldn't get that right. Since the chef from the original management had moved to Quaint, Bliss has gone downhill. While the steak, roast chicken, and burger at Quaint are much better, their specials are never anything to write home about, and they can't do calamari right either. We desperately need a good bistro in Sunnyside!
Pam Real Thai
Pam's Fake Thai should be the real name for that place. I'd eaten there 3 times and was utterly disappointed each time.
Kellari Parea
Nice report. I've eaten twice at their 44th St. location and enjoyed the food and atmosphere there very much too.
Sunnyside's least-discussed serious chow option
I didn't know either that they serve meals, though they had snacks up front when I was buying yogurt. Thanks for the tip!
Is La Flor in Woodside still good?
I must be an anomaly: I ate there twice and was disappointed both times. Granted, I never had their pastries or breakfast, but I just didn't think there was anything special about their dinner entrees.
Quaint vs Bliss in Sunnyside
Where are de Mole & BCD? Please enlighten me! I tend to stay close to home. As for Aubergine, kick-ass coffee, I've only had lunch there, didn't think much of the food, especially the quiche. Is Book Chang Dong the one on Qns Blvd & 40th? It's OK, considering that the cooks are Mexican!
I think Quaint & Bliss both have great burgers, roast chicken & steaks. Fish at Bliss is better though.
Quaint vs Bliss in Sunnyside
Which do you think is better? I've had good food and some so-so at both. Sunnyside can certainly use more restaurants like these but with more choices on their menus. But for now, these two joints and Ariyoshi seem to fill a culinary void. Has anyone tried the new Sidetracks on Queens Blvd? Any restaurants strike your fancy in Sunnyside? All input greatly appreciated!
Is Hop Kee the best cheap Chinese in NY?
I grew up in Chinatown but have never gone to Winnie's. What's the draw? Is Winnie still alive and kicking? She's the owner, right? What kind of crowd—aging pensionsers and the like? Are there other Chinatown bars worth visiting?
Does a Chinese restaurant exist in Manhattan that doesn't drown its dishes with brown sauce, black bean sauce or other jarred glop?
I grew up in Chinatown and had never tried Hop Lee. Did try Hop Kee next door and found a respectable beef chow fun. I always thought those 2 places were strictly tourist traps but they seem to be around for ages. Which place is better?

Where's Cantoon Gardens? On Eliz.?

I'll second Brian S's recommendation of Amazing 66, pretty authentic food.
queens sushi
Some friends told me about a place with no name. Is this it? Also, to the original post writer, people have been raving about Ran in Forest Hills which I haven't tried myself.
Chow close to Hilton NY
For casual & tasty French, Le Bonne Soupe on 55th bet. 5th & 6th Av.
Any decent Chinese buffet lunch in midtown?
The only decent one I know is not in midtown but on E. 25 off 3rd Av. I get rice with 4 toppings; most offerings are decent. Anyone? Thanks!
