Bubble Tea in Brooklyn
The best I've found is at Hanco's on Bergen Street near Smith Street. It's all about the tapioca they use--Boba.
Anything new in DUMBO?
Check out Cafe Baco on Jay St, just off Front.
Unfortunately Dumbo just lost Hecho en Dumbo last month--they are moving to the old Marion's location on Bowery.
Brooklyn Italian food
Definately Ferdinandos. More Sicilian style. Tripe and Pan e Panelli.
Coffee: Best beans in Brooklyn?
BGRose:
I second your Stumptown recommendation. I get my beans at the Brooklyn Flea underneath the bridge. However for the past 2 weeks, the Stumptown stand has been absent.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 BEST DISHES AT BROOKLYN RESTAURANTS?
1) Duck Meatloaf at Buttermilk Channel.
2) Tacos at Hecho en Dumbo
3) Burger at Diner
4) Steak at Lugars
5) Shepherd salad at Sahara
For dinner instead of Vinegar Hill, Buttermilk?
Buttermilk Channel is quite good. Vinegar Hill House is disappointing.
Chestnut (Smith St.) is similar to Buttermilk Channel.
One of my favorites is Moto in Williamsburg.
Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!
I concur. Cubana Cafe is mediocre (one standout is excellent chicken soup). Cafe Habana on Prince is amazing (though very crowded). Unfortunately Habana Outpost in Ft. Greene doesn't hold a candle to it's Manhattan sister (though the frozen Mojitos are great and the outdoor area is dog friendly.
Bubby's Brooklyn Need Recs
Slightly less than mediocre. And to add insult to injury, they raised their prices about a year ago at least 40%.
Still draws a crowd at weekend brunch because it's very kid friendly. Last time I was there, I had stereo screaming kids at either side of my table.
One redeeming feature: they make a nice margarita with fresh lime juice, OJ and decent taquila in a pint glass for $7 (last I checked)
BAM-----we need a restaurant for after theater
Thomas Beisl is decent. I love their smoked trout/horseraddish sauce crepe. Also servicable goulash, and Austrian pork dishes. Excellent espresso and good deserts.
what's your favorite byob in brooklyn (preferably on the f line)
The thing about Lucali: Don't go when they first open in the evening. The oven isn't yet hot enough and the slices are soggy. Still tastes good, but the pizza drops from 5 starts to 3.5. Late in the evening they bang out the real thing.
Help plan our trip to NYC more inside
Avoid RUB at all costs unless you like less than mediocre 'cue served in a frathouse environment. In Manhattan, I'd suggest Blue Smoke. Kind of upscale BBQ, but quite good.
Brooklyn Borough Hall Area
Do yourself a favor and check out Jack the Horse. One of the best restaurants around. Henry's End is also quite good, as is Le Petite Marche. I'm not partial to Noodle Pudding and find it highly overrated. A few blocks over in DUMBO, Five Front is also good, as is Hecho en Dumbo for authentic Oaxacan. Also near the Marriot is the remarkable restaurant row of Smith Street. Chestnut, Paninoteca, Chance, Grocery, and Clover Room are all recommended. Enjoy.
What shouldn't I miss at Bklyn Fairway?
Worst lobster roll I've ever had. Also the cheapest, and that includes Maine. However, the low price doesn't justify it. It's fairly tasteless lobster meat smothered in celery. Bleh.
Dining in Phoenicia/Margaretville Area
Here's a few winners:
Brios in Phonecia - Great pizza, some innovative entrees
Catskill Seasons in Shandaken - great country French cuisine
Slow Down Cafe in Andes - highly recommended for breakfast or lunch
Griffins Corners Cafe in Fleishmans
Binnekill Square in Maragaretville--good schnitzel
Inn Between - Arkville
Peekamoose is good and the atmosphere is lovely, but expect NYC prices.
who makes the best mexican corn?
I'll second or third Cafe Habana or Habana Outpost in Bklyn for Mexican corn. Transcendent.
Late Lunch in Brooklyn - Where to go?
Ferdinandos on Union Street, right off Hicks. Been in business since 1907, so they've clearly doing something right. This is authentic Bklyn/Sicilian fare, in a true neighborhood location. Highly recommended.
dinner after a performance at BAM
Thomas Beisl across the street is quite serviceable Austrian food.
kolaches & other czech food
Koliba is the real deal. Great Svickova, dumplings, roasted park with sweet cabbage, beef soup, good beer. Nice setting, and you'll occasionally see some NY Rangers.
TOP 5 RESTAURANTS WITHIN TEN BLOCKS
An alternative rating of 5 N. Heights restaurants:
1. Henry's End -5
2. Noodle Pudding -4
3. Grimaldi's Pizza -9 (take out only, don't bother battling the tourists)
4. Five Front -8
5. River Cafe -10
Best Cannoli????
The best cannoli is to be found in Bklyn at Ferdinando's on Union Street.
Old School Red Clam Sauce - Chopped and Whole Fresh Clams
Ferdinando's on Union Street in Bklyn.
Almond Croissants
Tisserie on 16th Street and Broadway has a great almond croissant. So does Almondine on Water Street in Bklyn.
I've done DiFara's but who is #2
I know Totonnos has its fans, but I have to score one for the very disappointed. I found the pizza lacking in flavor compared to others like DiFara, Lucali, Johns, Grimaldis. Sorry, because the spot is old school and fun.
Lobster Rolls ?
The Fairway lobster roll is the worst I've ever had, but also the cheapest. Utterly tasteless.
IMHO, outside of Maine, the only place that makes a decent lobster roll in NYC is Brooklyn Fish Camp, but you'll pay dearly for it. You can get two better rolls in Maine for the price of one at BFC.
Brooklyn Heights Brunch
JtH has a fine brunch. They have a shrimp salad sandwich that's good. Very nice fresh baked scones.
The vibe is very different between JtH and Superfine. The age of the clientele skews about 25-35 years older at JtH, probably reflecting the general demographic of Bklyn Heights vs. DUMBO.
Superfine has a fine brunch, but IMHO, not Superfine. The service is usually quite poor, and the food is only decent. Though if you like live bluegrass music, Superfine delivers that.
Better cocktails at JtH too (just have to wait until after noon on Sunday).
