I had this soup a couple of weeks ago and can attest to its deliciousness.

Authentic macarons?

Just got to try these yesterday, far and away the best macarons I've eaten in Chicago. Amazing texture, perfectly delicate, I can't wait to try her different flavors from month to month.

Authentic macarons?

I am constantly on the lookout for a great macaron in Chicago and now I have a new one to check out. I wish I could get my hands on them outside of the market as I work most Sundays.

Is sea urchin supposed to taste like poison?

It should taste briny and slightly sweet

Authentic macarons?

I've tried macarons from Vanille and Fritz Pastry, and I prefer the former. Frtiz's were pretty good (the chocolate one in particular) but the texture of the shells were a little inconsistent - i.e. some were crisp with a nice chew (ideal) but also some whose shells were too crunchy. I also like that Vanille's are smaller.

Well it does call for sweetened condensed milk, which contains a good amount of sugar.

Alinea - good, very good, but disappointing

Just wanted to add that I had dinner here tonight and there was no bread service. Can't say I missed it too much, seeing as there was plenty of food otherwise, but just thought I'd mention it.

L2O or Tru

I haven't been to Tru, but I did the 12 course menu at L20 for my birthday in September and it was outstanding in every way. Even my father, who generally avoids seafood, was blown away by the quality of the meal (though he did think it was quite a lot of food!). I will echo the sentiment that the bread service is also outstanding, I could have eaten a bucket of the little rosemary croissants.

Chocolate

My favorite straight chocolate bar is probably the Valrhona Le Noir Gastronomie. I think the name has changed, but it's the 61% bar. Love it.

L20 or Blackbird for birthday dinner?

I've made reservations at L20. Thanks to both of you for the comments.

L20 or Blackbird for birthday dinner?

As I was not able to get a reservation at Tru this coming monday, I've narrowed my options down to L20 and Blackbird. I'm completely struck with indecision, and was hoping some advice/comments from chowhounders would help me out. I've been to Blackbird for lunch, but I've heard it can get really crowded at dinner. L20 seems like a more upscale, special occasion place.

Thanks for your help.

I got one of the best steaks of my life at Ziers: dry-aged bone-in ribeye. Incredible.

Looking for a special place for birthday dinner next month

It's my birthday next month and I've been given the opportunity to pick out any restaurant in Chicago. I'm specifically looking at fine dining options. I had the privilege of doing the tasting at Alinea back in April and it was absolutely incredible, but unless the menu has changed by the end of next month, I don't want to go and have mostly the same dishes.

The two choices that are coming to mind for me are Tru and Charlie Trotter's. I've heard some mixed things about the latter lately, and wonder if the atmosphere there is really what I'm looking for.

I'd love to hear opinions about the aforementioned restaurants, and any suggestions would certainly be welcome. Thanks!

Foods you can't keep in the house because you can't stop yourself eating them

I do the same thing! In general, if it's crunchy and sweet, I can't stop myself.

Potentially silly question about o ya

I have a reservation here next week. I've never been too adept with chopsticks, and I'm a bit concerned I might embarrass myself trying to use them there. I know some argue for using your hands when eating sushi, would this be acceptable there? Also, it looks like there a lot of cooked dishes that would require a knife and fork, which makes me think that maybe they accommodate for this sort of thing.

Also, having read through threads on here, I'm incredibly excited to eat there!

Great Lake Pizza

I went there a month or so ago. We got there 20 minutes before opening and there was a significant line. We placed our order around 545 and our pizzas weren't ready until 715. We live about 15 minutes drive from there, so maybe it was due to the time between cooking and eating, but we didn't find them to be that special. Good, not great.

Chicago's Grande Dame? The Kitchen Table Menu at Charlie Trotter's

I actually had the opportunity to do the tasting menu at Alinea back in April and it was absolutely wonderful. Your pictures brought a lot of that experience, especially the rhubarb course, which has become one of my best taste memories. I look forward to trying Charlie Trotter's.

Chicago's Grande Dame? The Kitchen Table Menu at Charlie Trotter's

Hi Kevin,

Love your blog. Someday I hope to get to all the places you've been, but for now I'm content with just looking at the pictures.

I'll be in Chicago in the near future and will hopefully make it out to Charlie Trotter's. How would you compare it with the other fine dining establishments you've visited in Chicago (L20, Alinea, Tru, etc.)?
