Lamb shanks with caramelized onions, from NY Times

Thanks! I ended up pouring the onions & liquid through a strainer then into a gravy separator. I put the onions back into the pot, got them a little darker, then poured the liquid-sans-some-fat back into the pot to reduce. Then added the lamb back in. Also ended up adding more than a cup (maybe 1 1/2 - 2 c) of the fruit mixture at the end.

Lamb shanks with caramelized onions, from NY Times

Mine is in the oven now - smells delicious, looks delicious... meat is tender and everything. But there is a ton of liquid in the pot with the onions, I presume from the fat rendered. And the onions are not caramelized - they're soft and sauteed and everything but not caramel-y like I imagined.

Any suggestions? Should I remove the lamb and cook down the onions on the stovetop more?

Online Video Chat with Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi

I'm planning to watch it - not sure how useful the comments from other participants will be, but Ottolenghi & Tamimi should be interesting! I saw a documentary featuring Ottolenghi that was fabulous.

Farm Burger

I like Farm Burger but agreed it's nothing outstanding compared to other farm-to-table places. Had an amazing meal at Cakes & Ale, and I'm trying Empire State South next month, but Farm Burger is good for the price point & focus - i.e., burgers.

Alcohol at Antico or Hankook?

I'm having dinner with a friend, and drinks will be needed! I'm thinking about Antico Pizza Napoletana or Hankook Taquería - do either serve alcohol? (Beer & wine is fine with us.)

Thanks!

Small & narrow martini glasses

Actually this 5-oz martini might be good - I've seen some martini glasses up to 10 oz!

Small & narrow martini glasses

Thanks - great links - I was hoping to find something like the 1st but no curve - just a small (i.e., not enormous) martini glass with the same straight edges.

Small & narrow martini glasses

The usual martini glass - these days - is a large-capacity wide-angled martini glass. I'm looking for a smaller glass with less of a wide angle - more of a narrower opening at the top.

Is this still a martini glass? Any thoughts on where to find? Seems like the rage is huge martini glasses that could hold a TON of martini & is bedazzled - I'm looking for small & simple.

Thanks!
Lauren

Coffee in SOMA/Downtown area

Post-trip update - I went to Sightglass on Sunday, which was excellent. I loved the space, although I didn't have time to stay. I got a latte there, which was very good, although I regretted not getting a macchiato. Their pistachio & blackberry croissant was also good.

Tuesday I went to Blue Bottle, which was even more excellent. I got a macchiato there which was outstanding. Their poached eggs were also amazing! The line was slow, but I really really enjoyed both the coffee & the breakfast there.

Thanks for the suggestions!

dinner near SCAD

R. Thomas, Sufi's, La Pietra Cucina are all quite close. LPC used to be GREAT but not sure now that they've switched things up. I suspect it's still good but just haven't heard yet. The other 2 are also solid choices.

Coffee in SOMA/Downtown area

Thanks for the correction on Peet's - I knew that but must have mistyped.
And thanks for the recommendations! I might have time 1 morning to venture into the Mission but the other days I will likely want solid coffee but closer to the hotel.

Coffee in SOMA/Downtown area

I'm a bit of a picky coffee drinker. One of those "Starbucks only under duress" kind of people who grinds coffee every morning before making coffee in a bialetti maker and who doesn't drink the drip at work.

So near my hotel in San Francisco next week at a business meeting, I'd really like to drink non-Starbucks. Google tells me I have a few choices close to the Westin on 3rd between Market Street & Mission Street - what do you think? Which should I prioritize and which should I avoid?

Café Gratitude
Pete's
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
Blue Bottle Coffee Bar
Boulange de Market
Cafe Madeleine

If you're ever in Atlanta, I'd be happy to give coffee shop tips!
Thanks!

Good ice cream (in maker) recipes?

Agree wholeheartedly!

You might consider one that's not egg-based, it would be easier to make especially in bulk. I have made a tiramisu flavor with mascarpone cheese & coffee liqueur that is out of this world.

atlanta penzeys

I loved it! It is a huge space for the amount f product they have, but generally it's fantastic. They have open containers of everything, so you can smell before you buy. And recipe cards too.
A note on cost - if you buy in plastic containers or bags, it's much more reasonable than buying the glass jars.

Where to buy dried mushrooms in Atlanta area?

Try Buford Highway Farmer's Market, Dekalb Farmer's Market, or something like that. I noticed that at BHFM there were a ton of dried peppers so perhaps there's a mushroom section too.

Need help locating the best Chinese food in Atlanta!

I will give a nod to Chef Liu's as well - delicious! I like the juicy pork buns, the pork w/ fennel dumplings, and the eggplant w/ spicy garlic sauce. Enjoy!!

Atlanta-area Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

The 2 different CSA's I've gotten have both been through local synagogues. The latest one is through Jewish Food Alliance and the pick-up is at Shearith Israel in Morningside.

I have enjoyed them, but be forewarned - it was hard for me to go through all of that produce, and I split it with 2 others! It was hard to get through so much of any one product, also - like the oodles of collard greens or pink-eyed peas. And once you get through it, a whole new batch comes the next week! You have to be creative and diligent.

Where do you buy your coffee beans in Atlanta?

Once I break the vacuum seal, though, is it still ok to have at room temp? I cannot re-seal after I open the package. I cannot go through an entire package in 2 weeks - 1 person @ 1 cup/day = more than 2 weeks.

BBQ catering

I'm thinking about getting BBQ takeout/catering for my birthday dinner this year - get a bunch of meat, sides, etc. to my house, and my friends & I can enjoy at our leisure.
Has anyone done catering with a local BBQ place? Any thoughts?

Where do you buy your coffee beans in Atlanta?

I have Dancing Goats beans in my freezer right now. I've also tried Bare Nekked Espresso and one other brand... name escaping me... but all purchased at Whole Foods midtown. They have the local brands highlighted. Aurora also great, though!

I had really mediocre/poor service there, but the food was decent. I might give it another shot. Now that it's on ScoutMob, they're packed.
