Who has the best fish boil in Door County?

I'm a fan of The White Gull Inn. We've been going there for many years and enjoy the hokey explanation of fish boils, the delicious food, the accordion music...the whole package there.

Top cheap eats in Chicago

Earlier this year we spent a weekend in Chicago and enjoyed Jibek Jolu on N. Lincoln Ave. The cuisine is Central Asian about which I knew nothing before going there. We enjoyed trying something unique and the price tag was quite reasonable. The food was really good, too. No wine, but you can bring your own. There is a Walgreens just up the street or a liquor store down the street where you can pick up a bottle. We took the L there from our Loop hotel.

Your ulitmate Vanilla dessert?

Warm rice pudding made with a vanilla bean, milk, and cream.

St. Louis Recommendations - Washington Univ

My daughter is a student at wustl. She and her friends like Gokul. It's a vegetarian Indian buffet, and now they have a location in the Loop, not far from the Danforth campus. We also really like Guido's on the Hill. It's an interesting place, Spanish and Italian food. I really like the Spanish food there, and they have a good version of St. Louis-style pizza.

Booyah in the Green Bay area?

You will find booyah in Door County at Belgian Days in Brussels July 9-10. Also, Marchant's, the grocery store in Brussels, has excellent booyah. Marchant's also has a meat market in Sturgeon Bay where booyah is also available. I'm a fan of Marchant's version which is a vegetable and chicken soup.

super lemony cookies or bar recipes?

+1 for Dorie Greenspan's Lemon Cream Tart. It's fantastic.

Clove-Heavy Recipes?

I add about 3 or 4 whole cloves to lentil soup and when I make chicken broth an onion studded with cloves goes in.

Kraft Old English Cheese

I grew up in Chicago and my mom made a cheese ball with Old English and Roka Blu spreads mixed together along with cream cheese and grated onion and then rolled in chopped pecans. A real treat of my childhood. Mom always shopped at Jewel, so I know Jewel carried it way back when. I haven't lived in Chicago in quite a few years, but I'll bet Old English is there some where. After all Kraft hq is in Chicago.

Rose's Christmas Cookies by Rose Levy Beranbaum - anybody baking from this?

My book is falling apart, too. Hate that!

Gingerbread People - my daughter's favorite cookie and a Christmas tradition around here.
Mahogony Buttercrunch Toffee - fantastic!
Mini-Cheesecakes - fussy, but worth it
Swiss-Italian Mocha Meringues - Okay, not worth the trouble

Your tried and true Cook's illustrated Best recipes.

This recipe intrigues me. I'm a midwesterner and don't have experience with clam bakes. Without added liquid, what makes the broth?

No knead bread with no dutch oven

I've made no knead bread in both a cast iron dutch oven and a pyrex casserol dish with a lid and it came out great both ways. I like the CI no knead recipe.

Mad Men

You must get out the "best" china, silver, and table linens. And I cringe to even bring it up, but are there any children in your life that you could recruit to mix the drinks like Sally Draper does?

Corn Pudding for Thanksgiving

This is a fantastic corn pudding recipe. A good combination of savory and sweet. I have made it quite a few time and I've always been happy with the results. I usually double the recipe and bake it in a 13x9 in baking dish for the Thanksgiving crowd. It will likely need more time in the oven than the recipe calls for. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Corn-Chive-Pudding-13470

Door County Fish Boils

We alway go to the White Gull Inn, which is a treat, but I am curious about what we are missing. What fish boils do you chowhounds favor?

Vanilla Beans

I am curious about differences among the various types of vanilla beans. Tahitian, Madagascar, Bourbon, Mexican...what is the chowhound wisdom on this topic?

CWE St. Louis

I have been a fan of Chez Leon for quite a while. Perhaps not cutting edge, but it's a lovely room with consistently good food. And Leon always makes us feel so welcome.

Lake of the Ozarks

I will be going to Lake of the Ozarks next weekend and I'm curious about what chowhounds recommend there. Is there anything unique to the area to look for? Also, are there any place we ought to avoid?

Limpa bread in St. Louis

Is there a place in St. Louis to buy limpa bread? My heritage is Swedish and we had limpa for Christmas every year. The older I get the more I want to recreate the Christmases of my childhood. My daughter saw a mix for Swedish rye bread at Ikea. Does anyone have experience with the mix?

TARGET - what's your favorite food/beverage item?

The Archer Farms Ginger Beer is fantastic. Kind of like ginger ale, but way more gingery. Mix it with rum and a squeeze of lime...yum.

Regarding Girl Scout Cookies

Every year I wonder who had the brilliant idea that the cookies should arrive during Lent. It's impossible to save them until after Easter!!

Swedish Holiday Recipes Please!

Our Swedish-American traditional Christmas dinner includes:

pickled herring
fruit soup - made with assorted dried fruits and tapioca (not popular with my children)
swedish meatballs
limpa bread
rice pudding served with a dollop of lingonberries

I am not near Ikea which I understand sells lingonberries, but my local supermarket (Dierbergs) stocks Felix brand lingonberries in the jam section around Christmas time. Lingonberries can also be served as a condiment with your meal. They would be nice with your roast.

I think it would be great to serve pickled herring with cocktails before dinner and rice pudding for dessert. My mother used to put one almond in the batch of rice pudding, and the person who had the almond in their serving got an extra little gift, such as a small box of chocolates or a little ornament. I guess the marzipan pig was lost to the mists of time in our family.
