Help! Good coffee and free wifi in Williamsburg, Brooklyn?
I find myself in the land of the hipsters every Saturday morning while my wife and 4 year old son go to yoga and I've found plenty of places with top notch coffee beans and nice decor, but all the coffee has been week and, to top it off, I can't get anything done since none of them have free wifi.
Any suggestions?
Meat Loaf Lightener
I've used regular breadcrumbs, panko and matzo meal in different circumstances. Not a huge difference between the first two, but the last brings an interesting sweetness to the party (ah, the wonders of figuring out what the heck to make for dinner during Passover after a few nights). I liked it so much I've made it with leftover matzo meal (which I ALWAYS end up with) well after the holiday.
Help---I'm making cookies and don't have an egg!
The mayo is an interesting idea. It is, after all, made with egg. Applesauce sounds interesting, if you don't mind the change in flavor. I'd think it would lose a little of its rising potential though, wouldn't it?
any recommendations near Beacon Theater - broadway and 74th
Nikos (Greek). It is right across the street.
Hail Queen Makeda - Resurrected in DC
Wait. Does this place have ANYTHING to do with the transcendental Makeda in New Brunswick, New Jersey?
Hawaiian Pizza in Forest Hills
Thanks! I'll have to try it. Unfortunately I'll need to wait until we get back from Florida (irony being it'll probably be easier to find there) but it's definitely on the "things-to-do" list!
Hawaiian Pizza in Forest Hills
Hi.
As a New Yorker, I know this is tantamount to heresy, but I'm dying for a Hawaiian Pizza. That whole sweet/salty thing has been on my mind for over a week. Other than California Pizza Kitchen and Dominos (ugh) is there anywhere in the Forest Hills/Rego Park area that makes a good one? I've been looking all evening and it doesn't seem to be available.
Thanks in advance!
Restaurant Suggestions for 1st time Visitors to USA
There are some wonderful suggestions for "New York" food in Bourdain's "The Nasty Bits". He makes suggestions of what he feels is food that exemplifies New York. It isn't about the finest French food or anything like that. It is about the Pastrami at Katz's or the Hot Dogs at Papaya King. I found it an interesting and fairly accurate list (as a native New Yorker).
Chicken B'stilla
I am going to dinner on Sunday where Chicken B'stilla will be the main course. Never having had said dish, I am at a loss for what wine to bring. Any ideas?

Secret Ingredients
My wife introduced me to putting Worchestershire sauce in Kraft Mac & Cheese. Our guilty weekend in front of the TV pleasure.
good places that say NEW YORK, NEW YORK for not-too-adventurous tourists
Times Square is dangerous. Too many familiar chain restaurants. Katz's is an excellent choice for something uniquely New York. Also you could go down to Little Italy and pop into whichever place suits your fancy and have a decent meal for not too much money. Although... there IS a new branch of Junior's 'round the corner from the Marriott Marquis if that suits your fancy: best cheesecake in the world.
Most importantly: what KIND of food do they like?
Most COMPLICATED Dish You Ever Made
Has to be a toss-up between smoked salmon with dill tortelloni and peking duck wontons in duck soup.
Slow Cooker
Have you tried contacting Rival? I find most cookware manufacturers to be fairly reasonable with replacement parts.
How long does a steel last?
Great! Thanks, all. I'll look into the 3M scrubbie idea.
How long does a steel last?
I have a honing steel which is probably 10 yrs old. I use it every time I take out my knives. Is there a limit on how long they will work? There are a few spots that look more worn than the rest and I was wondering if I should consider a new one.
help with brined pork chops
It should be fine for sauteing, but I think braising will bring it's own succulence to the party. Just make sure you cook it long enough. I'd dry off the surface as much as I could before sauteing to ensure a good sear.
neighborhood italian around 45th and 9th?
Sure. There are plenty of Italian places there. Try Peitrasanta at 47th and 9th (more Northern Italian) or there's a place across the street that I cannot remember the name of that is more of a Southern Italian/Italian American flare. Neither are real cheap... but they are quite nice. Then there is DaRosa's on Restaurant Row - which has a nice Price Fixe pre-theatre menu.
What are you making for Rosh Hashanah?
Brisket with fennel, mushrooms, potatoes and onions. Probably a salad. Wine and bread, of course. Figure I'll leave dessert to a guest (well, except the ol' apples and honey bit). I needed to do something easy that I could cook in a crock pot all day. Wife'll be on a business trip and I've a 7 month old to take care of (he'll be having mashed potato with applesauce - baby latkes, baby).
Best Prix Fixe Lunches in City
Pergola des Artistes on 46th near 7th Ave. $10 gets you really nice bread, entree and a glass of wine. Not a crazy amount of food, but who wants a big lunch?
Mac 'n Cheese
Duke's (around the corner from City Crab on Park Ave south) is quite good for the ol' cheesy casserole.
