Restaurant advice needed for niece's 16th birthday party: informal, subway line, $25/person, reservations

Hi all,

My sister is looking for a Toronto restaurant for my niece's 16th birthday party but has been having trouble finding an appropriate venue. The criteria:

- Informal

- Approx. $25/person max

- Must be able to take reservations for a 6 pm seating

- Close to the subway line and in a safe neighbourhood (latter because of some of the teen girls will be going on their own)

- Can hold at least 25 people

I'm giving my sister the URL for this thread so she can keep an eye on it.

Thank you SO MUCH for any/all suggestions!

I wanted to thank you all for your feedback earlier this year; I'm enjoying gradually trying all these restaurants! I ended up going to Cafe Pleiade (suggested by estufarian) and it's now my favourite Toronto restaurant.

Colborne Lane snubs, Globe Bistro welcomes

I strongly agree. Some restaurants don't realize that just a simple apology can do wonders.

p.s. I attached a photo I snapped from our table at Globe Bistro. Apologies for the quality; I only had my little point-and-shoot.

Colborne Lane snubs, Globe Bistro welcomes

A couple of months ago, I posted asking advice on where my husband and I should go for a special birthday dinner (http://www.chowhound.com/topics/488913). Thanks so much to everyone who offered advice!

I decided on Colborne Lane first. After leaving three messages over several weeks with reservation info and asking them to call to confirm, I had heard -nothing-. I tried calling during business hours, but only got the answering machine. I finally left a fourth message cancelling my reservation (if it had ever been made) and explaining why. Still heard nothing.

After cancelling on Colborne Lane, I went ahead and made reservations for Globe Bistro (again, based on recommendations from Chowhound types). Globe Bistro now has an online reservation system in place. After making the reservation online, I received a friendly phonecall confirming the reservation, and another phonecall closer to the date confirming once more.

I know some people on Chowhound have had problems with the service at the Globe Bistro, but both my husband and I found the service to be friendly and efficient. I had also asked if we could get a nice table, and they put us at a romantic table (the most romantic in the restaurant, in my opinion) in a relatively secluded corner beneath a tree on the small mid-level floor, with a lovely view overlooking the restaurant. We were both happy with our food, and I loved my dessert (lemon tart).

A follow-up on Colborne Lane: I finally did receive a call from Colborne Lane ON THE DAY of my original reservation, to confirm the reservation. When we explained why we had cancelled, the person on the phone(I think he said his name was Kirby) just said that someone at the restaurant who took reservations had recently quit and besides, they had been getting SO MANY CALLS ever since Toronto Life magazine had named them one of the best restaurants in Toronto. At no point during the phone call did he apologize.

I'm sure Colborne Lane has fantastic food, but I have to admit that this incident has dampened my enthusiasm for visiting that restaurant. The quality of food is important to me, to be sure. But for me, the dining experience encompasses more than just the food.

Special bdy outing: Seeking upscale food but casual atmosphere: advice needed!

I still hope to try Colborne Lane sometime since it's gotten such rave reviews. But I left three messages (including trying to call when the place was open but just got the machine) with info about the reservation I wanted to make and asking that they call me back to confirm, but never heard back. Called once more to cancel the reservation and explain why I was cancelling, still didn't hear back.

I've made a reservation at Globe Bistro.

Thanks so much, however, for your help! It was much appreciated. :-)

Thanks again for these suggestions. Colborne LN didn't work out (after leaving several messages asking them to confirm my reservation, they never called me back) so I've made a reservation at Globe Bistro instead.

I gave it one last shot and haven't heard back, so just cancelled my reservation (if it was ever made, that is).

Do you know if there's anything up with Colborne Lane? I left a message shortly after posting my query on Chowhound (including my name, date of reservation, number of people, request for a non-communal table, and my phone number) but didn't hear back. Called during business hours recently and got the answering machine again, asked them if my previous reservation had been made, gave all the relevant info again, asked them to call back. They never did. :-(

I think I'm going to give Colborne Lane a couple more days, will try calling once more, but if I still don't hear back I'm probably going to opt for somewhere else. I'm wondering if something's wrong with their answering machine? Are they still in business?

Or maybe they're just so busy that they don't need my business. :-)

An update: Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Based on the recommendations (and esp. the blog post by Rabbit)! above, I've just made reservations for Colborne Lodge. I'm so excited! :-D Also intrigued by some of the other places mentioned, so I'm going to nudge my husband into trying those as well sometime ("the folks at Chow.com say you don't have to wear a suit, even...").

Thanks again. :-)

Special bdy outing: Seeking upscale food but casual atmosphere: advice needed!

It's my birthday next month, and my husband has agreed to take me out to whatever restaurant I choose (price not an issue) as long as he doesn't have to wear a suit. :-)

Advice welcome! I'd love to try a new "upscale food" restaurant ... we don't tend to go to many because of the suit factor, so almost any suggestions you have will be new to me, I'm sure.

Our current favourite restaurant in Toronto is Café Pleiades (fantastic food but you can eat there in casual clothes without feeling out of place), but I'd like to go somewhere new for my birthday.

Suggestions VERY much appreciated!

First time cooking duck -- advice appreciated!

Duck follow-up: My husband took over duck cooking duties in the morning and unfortunately didn't have the benefit of the wisdom posted here (as much as I love my husband, we don't cook well together, so I just kept out of the kitchen), so the ducks ended up being pretty tough, with a thick layer of fat that was difficult to cut through. I also found out that the ducks were Rouen (sp?) ducks -- he had forgotten to tell me, which is why I hadn't posted that info here, sorry.

Anyway, I'm determined to successfully cook duck despite this negative experience! And I definitely plan to use the advice given in this thread. Thanks again for all your help!

What do you mean by "tasty aromatics", by the way? Sorry to sound so ignorant, but I'm not an experienced cook. Thanks again!

First time cooking duck -- advice appreciated!

Thanks for this advice. I have no idea what type of duck it is; there's no indication on the label. My husband invited three others for dinner and looking at the ducks this morning, I'm thinking that there's no way they'll feed five people...they look very small and scrawny!

I'm going to try that steaming idea. I'm worried about over-cooking!

First time cooking duck -- advice appreciated!

A work associate of my husband's gave us two ducks from his duck farm as a gift. We're having two friends over tomorrow for dinner and we'd like to cook the ducks for dinner.

In perusing recipes online today, however, I notice that all the recipes seem to be for bigger ducks (5 pounds or over). The ducks we have are each about 3 lbs. Can I just use one of those recipes and cook for less time? Or can anyone recommend a recipe for smaller ducks?

ANY suggestions appreciated!

Duck-ignorant,

Debbie

Help! King's Garden closed, looking for another Chinese restaurant for family outing

Thanks for this suggestion, mrsleny! Unfortunately I didn't see it until after I had talked it over with my family and made the reservation for E-Pan. I checked out the menu at Pearl, and it does sound fantastic! I must try that sometime.

Just a follow-up: I decided on E-Pan because it was less expensive than Dynasty -- my father pays for us all (seven people, including two children) and he's on a retirement income. We all enjoyed the setting and food very much, and the service was friendly and prompt. Super-clean washrooms! Thanks so much for your suggestions! I'm going to try Dynasty with my husband sometime, too.
