Decline of sake consumption in Japan

Are there any sources you would recommend I look intoto learn about the reasons for the dramatic decline of sake consumptuon in Japan since the 1950s? I know that beer, whisky, shochu, etc. were/are used as substitutes as they came into consciousness, but I am wondering what other causes have contributed to sake's fall from its long-standing place of Japan's national drink. I am interested in internet sources and have found a good bit of info, but I am especially looking for academic publications on this topic.

Thanks!

Conch Fritters

I am dying to get my hands on some, like the ones found in different spots in the Caribbean. The most recent posting on saw on this was from early 2007, so I was hoping there might be an update by now!

Brown Butterscotch Pie

Thanks for letting me know! I still liked the way it tasted, the consistency just seemed to be a little off.

Brown Butterscotch Pie

I must have done something wrong, but I'm not sure what. Once I added the egg mixture back into the milk base, it coated the back of the spoon immediately. In fact, it turned into a runny omelette like consistency. So I immediately put into into the pie crust and into the oven. The heat didn't seem to change anything. Is this supposed to be so eggy? Maybe I was expecting something else, but the recipe is correct in saying 9 large egg yolks and 3 T of cornstarch right?

Best sandwich to be found in midtown that would hold up after a 2 hour train ride

I will be in midtown running some errands and need to pick up a good sandwich that would survive a 2 hour train ride and still taste good after. This is for a person who loves pork and all kinds of offal and doesn't get to NYC that often.

One dinner in Philly

I'm coming to Philly soon and will only have one opportunity to eat dinner there Any suggestions? I live in NYC, so I have already been to Morimoto and Buddakan, but maybe the originals are better? Nothing too stuffy either. Thanks!

I have always loved Arte Cafe for an inexpensive neighborhood Italian meal - on 73rd between Columbus and Amsterdam.

Surpise Dinner party for 40 people in NYC..ideas?

I did a surprise party for a group around this size at Blue Water Grill in the Vault Room downstairs. They can even hook up your iPod if you want to create your own playlist for the event.

best brownie

chez le chef on lexington had a pretty good brownie. i got one but was told to heat it up when i got home since it was in a refrigerated case at the bakery. i thought it looked hard and dry looking but once it had 10 seconds of the microwave, it was crackly on the outside but fudgy on the inside. i'm sure he could have warmed it up for me himself, but it was a to go order that i was planning to eat until a couple of hours later anyway

Any recent Black Pearl reports

Went there a couple of weekends ago with three other friends. All of us had the lobster roll and while we all agreed it was good enough and contained plenty of lobster, some of us decided we'd had better. The service was horrendous though. We ordered 2 dozen oysters specifically asking for them to come before the lobster rolls. Didn't happen. About 5 minutes after we received our roll, our server apologized and asked if we still wanted the oysters. We did, if it was relatively soon. After we finished everything, they STILL had not brought the oysters out, at which point we cancelled the ordering which made the server look very upset. Also the dessert we wanted on the menu was unavailable.

Places I must eat in Brooklyn

Unfortunately I don't to Brooklyn all that often, ashamed as I am to admit it. What places/dishes are a must-eat? If I wanted to do a full day of snacking, any suggested itineraries?

Best of breed suggestions?

I just wanted to see what everyone's suggestions were for restaurants in the city that serve up dishes that are "best of breed" so to speak. Could be french fries, lobster rolls, sushi, bbq, oysters, and really anything else since I'll eat almost enything - thanks!

Unique and fun dining experiences in SF?

i'm not an sf native, but have spent some time there and a year ago, we went to supper club. while i've heard some people have had bad experiences, we enjoyed ourselves with the various talent performing. some eastern european contortionist girls, etc.

Easy antojito or Tex-Mex appetizer suggestions

Not looking for a dip, but something a little more substantial that won't get soggy if made an hour or two before being served to a group ~20 people. I need something made from relatively easy to find ingredients as well.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Any guesses at how to replicate City Bakery's hot chocolate?

Thanks rhee! Yeah, I tried creating thickness some time ago with corn starch and it worked pretty well. I'll have to try it again.

Any guesses at how to replicate City Bakery's hot chocolate?

It's so rich that by the time I finish my small cup, I feel sick but I'm still addicted. It tastes like a melted chocolate bar to me. Any ideas at how to replicate? Think they use heavy cream or half and half?

Looking for extraordinary cheeses

I'm with everyone on the Humboldt Fog, and it's pretty easy to find now. A great snacking cheese is Druken Goat (Cabra al Vino), which is a semi-soft goat cheese that's been bathed in red wine so the outside is purplish. The latter is great with some olive tapenade.

Good places to buy Chocolate Bars?

I think Recchiuti in the Ferry Building has some interesting chocolate flavors. You can check out their website here - http://www.recchiuticonfections.com/

Brunch?

It's not new, but my all time favorite is Norma's in the the Parker Meridien in Midtown. I drag everyone there, though it's kind of pricey for brunch and you'll leave absolutely stuffed. Can be a long wait if you don't plan ahead by making a reservation.
