Dinner for 10 in the Village

Rasa, 25 W 8th St. (W 8th St. between Macdougal St. & 5th Ave.), (212) 253-9888

This authentic Malaysian restaurant (they do sushi too) should fit into your budget and is probably more exotic than food you can get back home. I've been there with a similar sized group and they were very helpful in picking out suitable menu items. They do take reservations on Open Table.

$15 hr min. wage x zero hours =?

Takeover? I thought the Feds were going down there to expel Texas from the Union.

Chao Thai

I also dined at "Too" and found the frogs legs and the catfish salad to be excellent. Spice level was robust without being overwhelming.

With more people, not just food workers, earning a living wage, maybe more of them could afford to eat out. That would require more workers and and give an incentive to restaurant owners to provide the type of service that would lure more customers.

Thanks, I don't like spending that much for a mediocre dining experience.

Met Museum Members Dining Room, been there?

I notice that the Met's dining options include a members dining room on the 4th floor, overlooking Central Park. If you've eaten there, I'd love to hear feedback.

Kao Soy--new Thai in Red Hook

Yes, his food description certainly sounds like it deserves two. I can only speculate that the ambiance of this modest establishment is less upscale than the restaurants he normally reviews.

Waitress at Elmwood Cafe Berkeley makes racist assumption

"Saying that a person, and then insinuating that a business acted out of racism, is a big accusation, and one better be sure he/she is very likely right."

How about holding the waitress to the same standard? Prior to her disrespectful behavior, shouldn't she have made sure she was very likely right?

Kao Soy--new Thai in Red Hook

This thread tempted me enough, so that when friends couldn't make it, I went by myself. The downside of that is that I only got to try 2 dishes, rather than sharing family style with friends. Nonetheless I was impressed with my meal, yum som-o (spicy pomelo salad) and kang hung le, a 3 meat stew. Can't wait to go back& sample the rest of the menu.

Food and restaurant jokes.

A couple is having dinner at a fine restaurant and after placing their order with the waiter, the husband notices a spoon in the waiter's breast pocket. He questions the waiter about it and the waiter replies "We had an efficiency expert in here last week and he said that the spoon is the piece of silverware most often dropped on the floor. By carrying an extra spoon, we save time because we don't have to go back to the kitchen to replace it." "OK, that makes sense;" says the husband.
After the appetizers, the waiter brings their entrees and this time, the wife says " I notice you have a black thread dangling from your fly. why is that?" The waiter replies " Well the efficiency expert pointed out that by tying the thread around the penis, we can go to the bathroom without touching ourselves, so there is no need to wash our hands, thus saving more time."
The woman says "Oh that is clever, but I have one more question. The thread enables you to take it out, but how do you get it back in?"
The waiter replies in a whisper, "I don't know about the other guys, but I use my spoon."

The psychology of distrusting GMOs.

One Monsanto claim is that GMO seeds provide higher yields than traditional seeds. A report released earlier this year by the USDA's Economic Research Service showed that those claims are untrue. The report states:

"Over the first 15 years of commercial use, GE [genetically-engineered] seeds have not been shown to increase yield potentials of the varieties. In fact, the yields of herbicide-tolerant or insect-resistant seeds may be occasionally lower than the yields of conventional varieties."

Lester Brown, founder of WorldWatch and President of the Earth Policy Institute, puts it more bluntly:

" ... no genetically modified crops have led to dramatically higher yields ... Nor do they seem likely to do so, simply because conventional plant-breeding techniques have already tapped most of the potential for raising crop yields."

Surprising. My preference for ZE Queens over ZE E Village is that the spice level in Queens was more robust.
