Philly chowhound to SF

Sure! Sorry for being vague but I also didn't want to pigeon hole our Itinerary! We're truly adventurous, both in terms of food (obviously it needs to be good--that's the only requirement) and price. We'd like a well-rounded trip so I was hoping people could give us some names of places they'd never pass up if they were coming to SF to visit and we can take on the research from there.

We're staying in Union Square and are willing to travel in the city, either by cab or muni. Francis, Delfina, Zuni, La Taqueria, Ferry Building Farmer's Market, are a few of the places I've started to check out. I hope that gives a vibe...

Zuni Cafe
1658 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94102

Delfina Restaurant
3621 18th St, San Francisco, CA 94110

La Taqueria
2889 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Philly chowhound to SF

Hello everyone. I'm planning a trip to SF from May 25th to the 28th, so I need restaurant recommendations for 3 dinners and 3 lunches. In terms of food, we eat and enjoy everything so I'm not concerned about that. Typically, we like less flashy and more intimate restaurants but they don't have to be tiny. We'd like to mix our options---some fancy (price not really a factor) with some hole-in-the-wall ethnic places unique to SF. And, I'm looking to you all for your expertise! Thanks in advance and I'd be happy to reciprocate if anyone's coming to Philly soon. We have a great restaurant scene here!

Philly: Where to buy wood chips for a smoker?

I'm looking to buy different kinds of wood chips for the new smoker I just got, but I can't figure out where to buy them in Philly. I'd prefer to stay in the Center City area, if possible. Also, I'm looking for a few varieties: Hickory, Mesquite, Oak, Apple, Pear, Pecan, etc.

Any help is appreciated!

Bonnie's Buffalo Chicken Dip: Questions

How many people does this recipe feed? It will be served as a dip and not a main dish...we'll be having BBQ pulled pork sandwiches and many many other items!

Crab salad and endive boat recipes needed--Please!

I'm having a cocktail party next weekend for about 20 people and would like to serve crab salad in endive leaves. They're always so pretty and easy to make ahead! But, I can't find any good recipes for a crab salad (I was thinking of the salad having more of a citrus base than a cream base, but let me know your opinion on this). Has anyone made a crab salad to go on endive leaves before? Any ideas are appreciated! Also, if you've filled endive leaves with another salad and it was a hit, I'd appreciate those recipes too!

thanks so much. Happy Holidays!

Philly CH to visit NYC & needs recs

Hi everyone!

I'm visiting some college friends at the end of December and am in search of a great restaurant to go to with them. Price isn't a huge factor, but we'd prefer not to go somewhere too expensive (not per se, for example). We're also flexible as far as location and cuisine go. I think in general we're looking for a place where we can have a wonderful meal with fresh ingredients and catch up. Any recommendations are appreciated! I'll report back if I can think of any other "wants" that will help narrow down the search.

HELP! need recommendation for south philly bakery

Just to let everyone know, I ended up going with a small cookie tray from Terminis. It definitely didn't compare to Isgro's, although i didn't expect it to! But, it served it's purpose. Thanks for all the posts!

HELP! need recommendation for south philly bakery

We're having a housewarming party next weekend and decided to have all the food come from south Philly stores since we just moved to south Philly. Naturally, we're having antipasto and mozzarella from Caludios, bread and goodies from Sarcones, soft pretzels, & water ice. My plan was to have Isgros supply dessert but I just found out they are on vacation until September 4th and I'm crushed. Is there another bakery in South Philly that I can contact? I've only ever gone to Isgros because their desserts are so awesome!

Thanks for the help!

pick-up catering--do you tip?

We're ordering a few platters from a local gourmet store because we're hosting a graduation brunch on Monday morning. But, we're picking it up from the store and serving it ourselves. I'm wondering what the tipping etiquette is in this situation? We're already paying a fee to have the food plated so that it's ready to serve, but if a tip is still required, I'd like to know. If they were coming to our house and serving the food, then a tip would be obvious, but I'm unsure in this situation.

Thanks so much for your help!

beer of the month club--delivered to PA

Hey guys,

My boyfriend just graduated from Law School, and for a graduation present I was thinking of signing him up for a year subscription to a beer of the month club. Do you know of any good clubs that deliver fresh microbrews? He and I are both huge beer drinkers and enjoy trying new, obscure brews. Also, I'd be interested in getting some nice beer gear--perhaps crystal beer mugs from Tiffany's.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Also, the one glitch is that we live in Philly, so we need to figure out how to have beer shipped to this antiquated state!

Mexican themed dinner party ideas

So, I'm hosting a dinner party for around 10 people in a week. It would be fun to make it mexican themed and serve good margaritas. But, I'm not sure what to make. I was thinking of doing a taco salad bar, with yummy toppings like homemade guac, mango salsa, etc. but I was wondering if you guys had any other ideas or recipies. I would especially appreciate recipies for the meat topings (perhaps chicken and beef/pork) and for desert.

I know there are so many toppings I would put on the perfect taco salad, but for some reason, I can't think of them right now!

Thanks in advance!

MANNA Catering. Check them out at

They are wonderful, will work with your requests, and all profits go directly to MANNA, the Philadelphia non-profit that delivers care and hope by nourishing people at acute nutritional risk due to a life-threatening illness in the Delaware Valley.

I strongly recommend them!

Philly CH visiting DC in need of recs

Thanks for your suggestions. We had already made a brunch reservation at Tabbard Inn, so I'm glad you recommended it. Dino looks great too, but do you have any other recommendations for dinner or where to grab quick snacks during the day?

Also, FYI, I'm not originally from Philly. I've just lived here for 6 yrs.

Philly CH visiting DC in need of recs

Hi Everyone,

I'll be visiting DC on St. Patrick's Day weekend, and I would love some recommendations for where to eat: brunch, lunch, dinner, any and all meals really! Philly chowhounds know how to eat!

Anyway, we don't have any restrictions as to the cuisine; we happily eat all types of food. But, I would like to keep the meals on the less expensive side, around 25 or under per entree (for dinner), since I'll be with a crowd (8-10 at the most) of recently graduated college students, graduate students, and the like. Also, we'll be staying near Dupont Circle, but will travel around if the food is worth it.

Thank you in advance for your help. I really don't know the dining scene at all in DC, and can't wait to try it out!

Opinions on August (Philadelphia)?

I went to August for the first time a few weekends ago. I only heard wonderful reviews, so I was very excited to try it out. Honestly, I wasn't impressed with a single thing about the dinner, except for my cheesecake. The service was only so-so. The food was bland and unexciting--and I even got the beloved crabcake. I keep feeling like I hit it on an off night, since my experience was so different from others, but it is going to take me a long time to return and give it another chance.

Felafel in Philly

I agree. Mama's has the best falafel in the city, without a doubt. The falafel and pita are always fresh and they also have a salad bar like maoz so you can dress your pita as you like.

Order-out casual lunch in Huntingdon Valley, PA

I'm looking for a good place in or near Huntingdon Valley, PA where I can order a casual lunch for a business meeting for about 10-15 people. Family style, pizza, etc. would work.

Thanks in advance!
