Pizza Joint for Private Party?
baapril, I'm interested in any info you found as I am looking for the same thing (mmm, pizza rehearsal dinner). Has John's been flexible? I called Totonno's and 3 of Cups and are awaiting return calls. Any info would be much appreciated.
Pink grapefruit Ting?
they have it at Christie's in Park Slope/Prospect Heights; north side of Flatbush b/w 7th and 8th aves.
Equally great sushi and not-sushi
Greetings, hounds. As an engagement present, we are treating good friends to the meal of their choice in the city. They have chosen sushi. That's great--I love good sushi, but my boyfriend doesn't eat any fish at all. I've never had a non-fish entree at a Japanese restaurant...so I'm looking for some place where the sushi and non-fish options are equally great.
Looking to spend around $50pp incl. maybe one drink pp. Neighborhood is unimportant. TIA.
Tempo to Offer $25/$35 Prix Fixe
Just got an email from Tempo...as of May 1st they will be doing any 3 courses off their full menu for $25 Sun-Thurs and $35 Fri-Sat. Tempo just keeps getting better. I wonder if they have trouble filling the place during the week? It's been packed when we've been there on weekends.
Sidewalk dining: Park Slope
Convivium's garden is amazing. Not sure if it is open yet, but it is magically calm.
DineIn Brooklyn- any sleepers?
Don't know for sure this year, but I know that last year applewood offered the regular menu as well, because I ordered off of it (and still got the $10 DIB gift cert at the end).
roll & dough closed until March 15th!
Now the sign says March 28...and I still don't see any renovating going on in there...very nervous. I miss my bing. Anyone have scoop on this?
Hearth or Lupa?
The last time I was at Hearth I felt it had gone downhill. We ordered the same type of things (2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, 1 glass wine and 1 beer) and the bill was $20+ more than when we went in Dec 2004. The portions were smaller and generally less creative as those we were so wowed by in our first visit. I'd pick Lupa.
newlywed would love some of your tried and trues
Just made this last night; it was delicious, so easy, and actually no cleanup--washed right off under immediate cold water.
Dine In Brooklyn 2007
Just got an email from applewood announcing their participation in this year's Dine In Brooklyn, March 20-March 30.
Does anyone have official information as to who else is participating? applewood was fantastic last year--and so were the two $10 gift certificates they gave us for coming--hope they do that again this year...
Much ado about Nothing: Una Pizza Napolitana
You are lucky you did not ask for a glass of water. When we did we were told the chef does not serve tap water but we can go buy bottled water down the street and bring it back. That was the last time we were there regardless of the pizza (which I agree was not life-changing).
Donna DaVine Wine Bar - Atlantic Ave
"...before the big wine bar opens up in the synagogue a couple of doors down."
please explain!?
"Yolato" on Sullivan
Just tried Yolato on Sullivan by W. 3rd. It defines itself as "Premium Yogurt Gelato"...I couldn't be more skeptical of the concept, but it wasn't bad! In fact the white chocolate/raspberry was fairly good. The nutella had a very strong and somewhat off-putting flavor, but it appeared as though the way to go was probably the fruit flavors. $3.99 for quite a small portion of this arguably fad item is a bit high, but I'd say its worth a taste.
Hudson Restaurant Week--JC Recs?
Hello from the Outer Boroughs Board. Considering a move to Jersey City and think that Hudson Restaurant Week may be a good way to start looking!
http://www.hudsonrestaurantweek.com/restaurants-bytown.htm
I have never been to JC so would love tips as to the best on this list--best value as well as overall food. Thanks!
Great newish spot on 5th ave--apropos cafe
We were looking for a cup of coffee tonight and Gorilla was closed. On 5th ave between berkeley and lincoln is a newish wine/espresso/coffee bar (guy said they have been there since Nov 1). Really excellent banana espresso bread pudding and solid coffee. We were the only people there Saturday night at 10...I would like this place to stick around! Super nice guy there, too.
Brooklyn New Year's Eve dinner?
I just called Convivium. They are doing 5 courses for $80, which is a good deal, but out of my price range. Did anyone go to Tempo last year?
Help for Beets Idiot
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/108829
Thanks all for your help. I see now that it actually calls for peeled beets--do you all recommend scrapping that, or if not, what do you use to peel?
Help for Beets Idiot
Forgive me here but I need pronto Thanksgiving help. I've offered to cook the Herbed Roasted Winter Vegetables recipe on Epicurious, which looks divine. But, I have never cooked with fresh beets before and don't understand where peeling comes in since the recipe never mentions peeling. Help!
parve mashed potatoes
We've made a recipe out of the old Craig Claibore NYT cookbook that calls for egg instead of dairy. The egg cooks on contact with the hot potatoes. Very tasty. We also added roasted garlic.
Comfort Food Suggestions...Depressed & Hungry
The mac 'n' cheese at Mama's (east village, sadly west village now closed) is outstanding. It has about 2 cloves of garlic per serving. If you're a garlic lover like me, that's a good thing, but I could see other's being put off. Mashed potatoes are great too and I've heard raves about the fried chicken and meatloaf.
Your best "healthy" banana bread recipe please
Mel, just made your banana bread and it came out great! Thanks for the tip.
Batali + Ray vs. Flay + Laurentis, Nov 12

I think the real battle will be whether Mario can refrain from "accidentally" stabbing his teammate.
Addicted to Bings
You should switch to my usual--hot and sour veggie and red bean. You won't go back to banana! The $1 NYU special all month means my life is full of bing.
