Afternoon Tea Near DTW Airport

Hi! I'm staying near the DTW Detroit airport. Last year, I tried TeaHaus and it was awesome. I was wondering if there are any other afternoon tea places within an hour's drive from DTW?

Looking For Good Chinese Dried Foods (ie: sea cucumber)

Hi! I'm flying out Monday night to Vancouver and was thinking of visiting Chinatown for dried scallops and sea cucumbers. But last time I was there, there were so many places!

Anyone have a good recommendation of a place--hopefully one stop because I'm traveling by wheelchair?

AFTERNOON TEA IN DETROIT? COMING FROM DETROIT AIRPORT TO LANSING

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for the recommendation! Last year we went, went back two more times and gushed to a few others. We're planning to go back in May when we're in town again. Thank you for the tip!!!!

Can a 13X9" sheet cake recipe be converted into 2?

Hi! I have a recipe for a 13X9" cake my friends like but for a potluck Saturday, the size is far too big. Does anyone know if I can split of make this into two cakes? I'll give one away to a church bake sale. Would the ingredients have to be altered? How about baking time? Help!

Canned Pumpkin Filling Recipes?

Wow, those are ingredients I never would have thought to put together either. May I ask: does it come out cakey? Like pudding?

I think I'm morbidly fascinated enough to try this! :) Thanks!

Canned Pumpkin Filling Recipes?

I was over-ambitious and bought too much pie filling. I was able to find recipes for the remaining cans except for pumpkin. Most recipes I searched for asked for canned pumpkin, not the filling.

Does anyone out there have recipes they could share? Thank you!

Anyone been to Spur Tree on LES?

Hi! My friends and I are planing to check out Spur Tree on a Monday. But I saw on their website they do dj music (a lounge, I know) but we really did want to check out the food but conversation would be nice too.

Can anyone who's been there tell me how the atmosphere is? We're going on a Monday so I hope we avoid the drunk, happy bar crowd. Do you think it's unavoidable on that day? What about eating at their outdoor area?

Any advice would be great! The menu looked awesome and priced well.

Best thin crust, chewy pizza for group of 8 that's NOT Lombardi's, please

Guys, thank you for the list and for steering us away from the overhyped big L. I'm going to start looking into this for my friends. Knowing which will fit two wheelchairs goes a long way to ease their discomfort. Thank you!

Searching For Brunch and Afternoon Tea in Downtown DC July 4 weekend

Anyone been to Busboys & Poets or Firefly? I know there were recs around about them but they were from a year before. I checked out their sites, their prices seem decent and atmosphere seems sedate which is what we want.

Anyone knows if it'sblaring with live jazz like most places I've been searching through? What's with the jazz? I like jazz but not when I want to talk to my friends!

Best thin crust, chewy pizza for group of 8 that's NOT Lombardi's, please

For every large group thing, we go to Lombardi's because we know no other. But I suspect that there are gems out there we're neglecting, so I thought I would ask here.

Is there a great pizza place you would like to shout out to? A bunch of us are going for pizza again end of July. But, there's 8 of us, 2 in wheelchairs. I really want them to be made welcome not regarded as if waiters have to make concessions to make them fit. That's not fair. I don't care if they walk in or roll in, they're my friends. They love pizza, too!

Suggestions? I'm a little tired of the increasingly touristy, overpriced pizza at the big L.

Yeah, not sure why it's called dim sum. Maybe they were trying to be cute? Trendy? Haha.

[DC Metro] Vietnamese Iced Coffee (or ca phe sua da)

Not sure. Sadly, there's not even a real Chinatown or Little Siagon anymore. The recipe is simple if you're interested.

Loved Willard and Teaism when we were there. I would suggest Mayflower or the Jefferson as well. The Hay Adams is my all time, but I know there must be places we've missed b efore. :)

Hm, latin dim sum? LOL. Um, the restuarant itself sounds cool but alas, dim sum is what we make/serve fir breakfast up here. We'll be coming from NY and half of us are dim sum chefs/coyrse designers. So they might not want dim sum of any kind considering they just got off working on dim sum the day before. LOL.

But I think for regular dessert or dinner, this place looks like a nice choice. Thank you!

Best Ice Cream Parlors In Manhattan Besides Serendipity?

I just wanted to thank everybody for all the recommendations! We ultimately went to Milk & Cookies for their freshly baked cookie ice cream sammys! Tiny place, best to visit during 6-9pm if you want a seat. Goregous tiny street to visit. They're on 19 Commerce St, south of Bleeker, a tiny street that starts on the west side of 7th Avenue facing downtown.

As many of you bemoaned in your above replies, I hardily concur: why isn't there any good sit down ice cream places? One place I had gone to once had few chairs, already taken by tourists, who suggested I lean by the front door when they saw I needed to sit down or let go my cane in order to eat the ice cream. Another tourist (in a heavy accent), had commented that I should find a place more suitable for people like me. I did: Sundaes and Cones in the village. They have tables inside, the owners even grabbed an extra chair when they realized there was only three chairs left for my group of four. And their Almond cookie cream rocked.

Geez, I thought us NYers were rude. Sort of glad to see I was wrong.

Hi!

My friends and I are meeting the Thursday before the July 4 weekend in DC to check out the fireworks. I was wondering if there are nice places for afternoon tea and July 4th brunch there you would recommend? We're staying in the downtown area of DC and figured we could walk or take the Metro.

Thank you!

Best Ice Cream Parlors In Manhattan Besides Serendipity?

?? Uh, okay, I can explain. I'm usually on a wheelchair. But my friend is tiny and cant carry it down five flights of stairs for me. (no elevator) But I can walk abet slowly.

Serendipity does not allow reservations for dessert only and last time I was there, they commented because I was on a wheelchair, seating wait could be long to 'accommodate' me and suggested we go elsewhere or stand and wait 45 minutes at least. Yeah, not going there again. Looking for something more better, at least friendlier.

AFTERNOON TEA IN DETROIT? COMING FROM DETROIT AIRPORT TO LANSING

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know we checked out Sweet Afton last Thursday. It was fabulous, fabulous. Loved the area, loved the blueberry lemon scones. We sang the place's praise when we got to our reunion in Lansing and plan on definitely returning when we're by Detroit.

Thank you for the perfect recommendation. You made our trip memorable!

Thank you all for your tips! We checked out Leos and loved it. Sadly, we couldn't stay long enough to try the rest. As for coney island, we were from NY, 15 minutes from the area Coney Island (lol) so we passed on that.

Thanks again everybody!

Best Ice Cream Parlors In Manhattan Besides Serendipity?

Hi,

I have a friend visiting tomorrow and I would love to take her to ice cream after dinner. Problem is, I'm cane-dependent so standing in wait at Serendipity on a Friday night is physically not possible.

Anyone with suggestions for a nice, sit down ice cream or dessert place in Manhattan we could cab to?

Richmond dim sum - Friday or Sunday afternoon

Hi,

Is Richmond the dealbreaker? Or would you consider downtown Vancouver because right down Pacific and down along Alberni is an awesome place for dim sum. No carts though. You order by menu and they make to order.

Pancakes in a Frying Pan? Hoping For Tips!

Thank you! Good to know! I've been getting advice that I should brown butter on griddle, others say put melted butter in batter. But a frying pan? What do you find works?

Pancakes in a Frying Pan? Hoping For Tips!

Hi! I want to make pancakes for my mom for her birthday this sunday and I got a nifty recipe, but everywhere I look, it asks for pancakes to be done on a griddle pan. I have neither room nor money to get one of those. I only have a non-stick frying pan. Am I already doomed from the start? can't a frying pan be fine for pancakes?

I would love tips and recipes, too. Nothing with bananas or chocolate though. She's a kidney transplant patient so she can't have those. I just want to make her plain pancakes as those were her favorite. My family wants to make every birthday count for her! Thank you!
