We've been here a couple of times now, easily the best burger I've had anywhere around Montreal. Pefectly seasoned and cooked. I've tried both the avocado and blue cheese burgers, very tasty. Husband goes for the standard "Laval" burger. Also really like the kool-aid pickles, and the coleslaw and fries that come with the burgers is very good. Only real complaint is that the coleslaw comes in mini mason jars which are really hard to dig it out of and it's a little annoying. I don't know if they are planning to add liquor to the menu at a later point, but when we went they only had .5% Molson so keep that in mind if you enjoy a beer with your burger.

Butchers that sell ground chicken and/or lamb at good price? (And also need a place to buy jamaican jerk seasoning)

I know you wanted to stay on-island, I found it at the Zellers on in Laval at the 13/Notre Dame. It was Mr. Gouda's brand, it you can navigate around their website, I just looked and they do have a store locations search, no guarantee they'll carry the jerk seasoning, but you might find a retailer closer to home to check out.

Can't help you on the ground chicken or lamb, I've found prices pretty much the same or close at most butcher shops. But for jerk seasoning, I went on a wild goose chase last fall trying to find it anywhere. After stopping at probably a dozen grocers, spice shops, etc I finally gave up... then found some at Zellers of all places.

Grumman 78 Food Court @ Faubourg

Any idea what kind their hours are? I can't find anything on their website and am wondering if they are keeping regular hours yet.

Chinese garlic [split from Quebec]

Agreed and it's usually half rotten when you crack it open.

Itacate New Location

Haha, I actually learned this the hard way. I had a lunch reservation there today for a table of 10. I found out by calling to confirm my existing reservation on Weds. Total bummer, I was looking forward to the brunch!

Cajun andouille sausages anywhere?

Thanks, for some reason my search didn't return any of those threads. I'll for sure try this butcher at Atwater. $25.95/kilo makes me cringe, but if he's got a corner on the market I guess they can charge whatever they want.

Cajun andouille sausages anywhere?

I tried to pick up some andoille sausages today and realized that what constitutes an andouille at my usual meat counter, isn't what I was used to getting in the States. I'm looking for the cajun type of smoked andouille made from pork butt with traditional cajun spices. What I keep finding here is the french version made from stomach or tripe. I've tried IGA, William J Walter, Supermarche PA and both butchers at Marche 400. Has anyone seen this anywhere?

CSA's - Who is YOUR favourite farmer?

Thanks, hala!

CSA's - Who is YOUR favourite farmer?

I'm interested in this CSA, they have a drop off location near me, and i've just waiting to pull the trigger until I talked to someone who has been using them. Have you been happy with the quality and variety of produce for the most part? I don't want to get stuck with 8 lbs of root vegetables and parsley, ya know?

Reviews of Rojo Mexican Bistro (DTW)?

I have been to their Rochester location over the summer, and I was not impressed for what I paid. I tried to order a pina colada, they don't make pina coladas (really??) I then asked for sangria, the server told me their sangria isn't good and suggested I order something else (glad for the tip, but off to a rough start) so I went with coke. We started with calimari with "chipotle" sauce, which tasted more like spaghetti sauce to me, and flautas which while very pretty to look at, were so dry they were tough to chew. I had enchiladas for my main which was OK but unremarkable.

Itacate New Location

Confirmed - full menu + a small selection of brunch/lunch dishes.

Itacate New Location

Do anyone know if Itacate serves a full menu on weekend afternoons, or do they only have an abbreviated brunch/lunch menu? I called and left a message, but if someone knows in the meantime, that would be super helpful. Also, it looks like their 'new' menu is now posted up on their website

Gingerbread mix?

I have a recipe for a gingerbread-based dessert and I've been having a hard time finding a gingerbread-flavored box mix anywhere (ex - Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker, etc). Has anyone seen this anywhere lately?

Opinions on best Thai food?

Just recently tried Restaurant Thailand on Bernard which is now my new favorite for thai in Montreal. Went for the Table d'hote and the tom yum kha was a great start. The chicken satay was quite possibly the best I've had anywhere, we actually got a second order to-go for a late night snack later haha. I had the Pad phed with chicken for the main course and it was very very good, chicken was tender, veggies were cooked perfectly and the sauce was complex and all around delicious.

Best all you can eat sushi in Montreal?

I've been to Kanda on St. Catherine and wasn't blown away, I prefer Sushi St-Denis if I'm going to spend the same thing at either place. But, I've talked to others who were satisfied with Kanda as well, so maybe its just a preference thing and I haven't been to Kanda in a while. For what it's worth, I was last at Sushi St-Denis much more recently and everything was very fresh and tasted spot on for what you'd expect. I just peeked at the Kanda menu on their website, and it looks to me like St-Denis has more variety in some categories as well (tempura, kitchen dishes, some of their maki rolls). My favorites are their cucumber/avocado maki rolls and pork dumplings which I could easily make a meal out of.

Best all you can eat sushi in Montreal?

Sushi St-Denis is stellar IMO. Great raw options but also plenty of yummy non raw/vegetarian/other cuisine items. They are located at 1669 St-Denis, look for the big red awning. And yes, it's all you can eat and the service is pretty good.

West Island Butchers

Talk about timely, you must be reading my mind.. Are there beef short ribs cut crosswise real thin/Korean style like at Marche L'Ouest, or can you order a slab and have them cut to your specs? I like to get them about 2-3 inches long, and I have had a hard time finding anyone in Laval to actually cut short ribs for me, or sell them fresh instead of frozen and I'm tired of driving to JTM for them. Also for what I'd pay $25 for ribs at JTM, it's closer to $40 at Marche 440, so go figure.

West Island Butchers

Never heard of this place in Hudson, but sounds pretty interesting. I'd like to try their Highland beef, what are their prices like?

West Island Butchers

This may not be helpful to you, because on the WI I also usually end of going to the Marche de L'Ouest butcher as well. But, if you don't mind heading to Laval, which depending on the time of day is can be a much shorter commute than heading into Montreal, try to butcher at Marche 440 (Boucherie du Marche 440, not Boucherie laCote du Marche). Or, like ios94 said, maybe just make a weekly trek to Atwater.

DTW - Colman's mustard?

I picked some up over the summer at Busch's in Rochester Hills

Need Carrot Cake [DTW]

Trifles Cakes in White Lake on Highland Rd has the best carrot cake ever. You might want to call ahead and make sure they have one on hand or order a day or two before.

Organic food stores in laval / montreal

You can try Viva epicerie sante at the Marche 440 in Laval, they don't have a huge selection of organic fruits and vegetables, but they have some and a pretty good selection of grains, canned goods, etc in organic/no preservatives, etc. There's also the Tau markets in Laval/Montreal. I haven't found anything comparable to a Whole Foods in terms of size and selection around Montreal, but it's gotten a bit better over the last few years.

In search of HONEY CRISP APPLES in downtown Montreal (including Atwater Market)

Bought honeycrisps again on Friday at the outdoor stalls at Marche 440. $1.85/pound and grabbed a dozen that were softball size and delicious. No sad looking honeycrisps for me

In search of HONEY CRISP APPLES in downtown Montreal (including Atwater Market)

The apple guy has a stall with nothing but apples in the northwest corner of the market sort of by Hamel. Last week I bought a basket full of enough honeycrisp apples to fill up my produce drawer in the fridge and it cost me $12. The ones at Marche 440 were leaps and bounds better still, but we've still been enjoying the JTM purchase.

Itacate New Location

Thanks for the heads up! How is the size of their dining room at their new location compared to their old location? We were thinking of swinging by for lunch next week, just wondering if it's still very small and if we'll need reservations.

Food to Bring Home to US from Mtl

Confirmed. I travel over the border with some frequency as well, and the poster above probably has less hassle with a Nexus pass. You should be able to bring just about anything other than fruits/veggies and raw meats (packaged meats like hotdogs, pretty much anything with a barcode is OK)- if they ask if you're carrying those items, they'll take them away from you.

You can certainly try to bring it all over the border if you don't mind maybe losing a few bucks worth of goodies, the worst they will do is take them away. Maybe you'll get lucky and it won't be an issue, you just never know what types of questions you'll be asked at the border.

In search of HONEY CRISP APPLES in downtown Montreal (including Atwater Market)

Picked up a big bunch of honeycrisp apples are Jean Talon this afternoon, they are pretty good, but still not perfect just yet. Also grabbed a few at Marche 440 in Laval and they were perfect; crispy and sweet and huge.

In search of HONEY CRISP APPLES in downtown Montreal (including Atwater Market)

Thanks for the tip. Which vendor were you able to find them at? I haven't been there in a while, but I'm guessing the grocer inside near Premiere Moisson?

Maybe this is wishful thinking and it's still a little early, but has anyone spotted honeycrsip apples around town yet this fall?
