good fried chicken in Austin (& beyond)?
I like the fried chicken at Bill Miller's BBQ, don't like the BBQ but like the chicken and those marinated onions.. they are so good. I went to the Luby's on Brodie week before last and they had fried chicken which is very good, but oddly they didn't have any liver and onions. 1st time I had ever been to a Luby's with liver and onions..
The best fried chicken I have ever eaten came from the southeast side of Dallas on Lancaster Street. Pretty tough area, but the chicken is made from a converted Dairy Queen (I think) and it is to go only. I don't know the name, but you have to stand in line to get it... Best ever...
When I was young Austin had some great fried chicken restaurants. Youngbloods on Lamar near Barton Spings, about where P. Terry is. and Kirschners on South Lamar, I think there is a Mexican food restautand there. That was outstanding chicken.

If you can find Sheila Partin Hamburger Buns, you can find a great hamburger.
Please ask at Phil's if they use Sheila Partin buns.
If you can find Sheila Partin Hamburger Buns, you can find a great hamburger.
The regular sourdough bun is a little sweet, that's why I prefer the jalepeno and cheese sourdough bun. Not hot at all, but really good.

Sheila Partin Buns are sourdough buns. One is the regular bun and the other is the jalepeno cheese bun. I like the jalepeno cheese bun. These are made in Houston and are shipped frozen. They are great.
The Roadhouse in Bastrop serves their hamburgers on these buns. Voted the best burger in Bastrop for many years running.
I haven't found anyplace in Austin that serves these buns, but I am sure there are here somewhere. I have found them in Dallas, Aransas Pass and Port Aransas. I know someone serves them in Granite Shoals.
I think anyone that says that their buns are sourdough with be Sheila Partin buns.
Does anybody know anywhere in Austin where they serve these buns.

Visiting Austin - Need Recommendations
Well, all I can say is it's obvious that like the Lyle Lovett song, "That's Right, You Ain't From Texas", but Texas loves you anyway. I read all the way through the thread on CFS and only saw the Broken Spoke mentioned once and they said that it was good. Have you ever tried it? It is round steak with a crisp batter with white gravy. The mashed potatoes are real potatoes, very good.
Hey buddy, don't know something until you've tried it. CFS shoud be simple tenderized round steak, chicken fried with yellow or white gravy. That's it. No ribeyes or other cuts of meat..... Anything else is not a CFS.
I'm glad you feel that way about the Frisco, just one less person to stand in line behind....
From a native Austinite.

Good burger in Arboretum area
I have tried Mighty Fine once and found the burger to be pretty good. I don't know what you don't like about it.... It's pretty simple, but that's what a good burger is about. When you start adding strange fixing, well if you like that you won't like Mighty Fine. I still like the Dan's at Ben White and Manchaca and the Fran's on South Congress better, but Mighty Fine ain't bad.

I don't know what you think good is, but those enchalada's are the best. Down home Austin cooking... You are just wrong... Usually standing room to get in every day.
Good burger in Arboretum area
It takes a south Austin guy to lead you to the best burgers in North Austin. You got to get a little out of the Arboretum Area, but the Frisco burger at The Frisco is very good. The burgers at Top Notch are very good too. They only take cash. These places are fairly close together on Burnet Road. I would like to add that I think The Frisco has the best enchaladas in town, bar none.
fried catfish
we got to go a long ways to see the Express play, but we still do it.
Sometimes you got to travel to get the good stuff.
Swimming Hole
wow, those are really good suggestions. Being a native Austinite, I have been to Krause Springs (great place), Blue Hole (another great place), Barton Springs (what can you say). I would mention Hamiton Pool out off of Hwy 71. Beautiful spot. I don't know if there is any water in Onion Creek right now, but Camp Ben McCullough is a place I used to go camping and swimming, it's right next to the legendary Salt Lick BBQ. But now that I know that Coopers is in New Braunsfels, I would go for a tube ride there. You can tube the rough and rowdy Guadalupe, only for the tough and young or you can tube the Comal for a relaxing trip down the river. Take you an ice chest and rent an extra tube to carry your refreshments. That is what I would do.

fried catfish
mevans4aus got it right. The Manchaca Firehall Kitchen is the best with all you can eat on Friday nights... Cherry Creek Catfish (across the street from Crockett High School) is very good too.... You don't have to leave good old South Austin for most anything...
Italian Food in Austin?
Well, I may be an old south Austin boy, but when I want to treat the wife for a special occasion and want Italian, I go to Carmelo's which is downtown. I have never been disappointed there.

Good eats in area of Brodie / Slaughter / Wm. Cannon / Manchaca
Well, I for Tex-Mex, I like Maude's at the corner of Slaughter and Brodie. Love the chips and salsa and the chicken enchaladas with green ranchero suace. In the same shopping center is Brick Oven Pizza. Have lunch specials. Pretty good Italian food.
Casa Garcia's at Manchaca and William Cannon is good too.
Most people will think I'm crazy, but I really like the fried chicken at Bill Miller BBQ also at Manchaca and William Cannon. They have these marinated onions that I just love.
Evangeline's is good for cajun.
Maybe someone can help me, but there is a chinese restaurant at Manchaca and Slaughter in the HEB shopping center. It is on the opposite end of the center from HEB. Good food.
Venture on down to Ben White and Manchaca for breakfast at Dan's Hamburgers and then go back and get the best burger in town.
Bachelor Weekend in Austin: Best Weekend Brunch?
You need to experience Austin. Brunch on Sunday, Nutty Brown Cafe. Friday night the 28th is Bruce Robinson....... country music songwriter........very good.
If you don't go to the Broken Spoke on South Lamar you are going to miss one of the last honky tonks in Texas. Have great lunch serving Chicken Fried Steak. If you click on my name it will take to my bio., click on my blog to see videos of these two places.

Best Tortillas in Austin
Best corn tortillas ........
Angies... in East Austin. I think that they are on 7th street. Just moved to new building last year. Really good food and they are known for their corn tortillas.

I am a native South Austinite. All but one of my recommendations will be in South Austin.
Only North Austin recommendation, The Frisco Shop -- Austin Institution and you should go there. It's on Burnet Road.
South Austin
The Broken Spoke for Chicken Fried Steak at Lunch. It's one of the best in town. While you are there see their museum. It's one of the last Old Time Country Dance Halls in Texas. It's on South Lamar.
South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery.... Several different choices. It's on South 1st. You just got to say you were there. It's close to downtown.
Freddie's Place ...... Real Austin Atmosphere, just down the road from the South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery.
Evangeline Cafe on Brodie Lane.... Real cajun food and music... Lots of fun
Dan's or Fran's Hamburgers... Easily the best in town. Best to visit the Frans on South Congress to get the SOCO atmosphere. But for the best breakfast in town, visit the Dan's at the corner of Manchaca and Ben White.
I know you have plans for Tex-Mex and BBQ, but if you want to know where the locals eat, just ask.
