Robbie Burns Day?

The Haven in JP has the last of three nights tonight. However, according to their website they are sold out.

Looking for a Quick Early Dinner in JP

During my two visits to Canary Sq. the service was a major problem. I liked the vibe there as well but the service was pretty awful. If I return I will probably sit at the bar rather than be forgotten about for long periods of time by the waitstaff.

Looking for a Quick Early Dinner in JP

I have always enjoyed JP Seafood Cafe. Solid spot for sushi and Japanese/Korean fare.

Let's make a list of bars without TVs

The Haven in JP has a small TV by the bar, but I have never seen it on over the course of several visits. It may be that they only have it on when the local teams are playing.

Geoffrey's in Roslindale

Geoffrey's had been one of my favorite restaurants within walking distance of where I live. A few weeks before the closing I was chatting it up with one of the bartenders and she was telling me about how a "second" location was going to open. When I showed up one night and found the restaurant closed, I felt a bit jilted. While the owners certainly have no obligation to me or the neighborhood, it was a little disappointing that they would just close up shop unexpectedly without even acknowledging the support the neighborhood has given them over the past several years.

I wonder if the landlords were similarly surprised and are continuing to use the Geoffrey's name to spite the tenants who unexpectedly closed shop.

In any cae, it is a big loss for the neighborhood and they will be missed. Especially since early reviews I've heard from friends are not promising, although part of that may be due to the whole experience being tinged with disappointment that has nothing to do with the new management/fare, much like drboom's experience.

Definitely Worth a Try: MJ Sub and Pizza

I married a former MJs employee. She still worked there when we first got together (10+ years ago). Steve is certainly a character and one of the nicest guys around.

good wine stores around jp, west roxbury?

I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to make a good judgment on their selection, but the few times I've visited the store I have found the owners to be extremely helpful with their recomendations. I really appreciated the fact that they stuck to recommendations within my stated price range and did not try to sell me a more expensive bottle of wine.

Boschetto Bakery in Roslindale Closed! 1952-2009

RIP indeed. I don't know what my mother will do. We have had one of those rum cakes for her birhday since before my memory begins.

PJ Kellehers

Wow, I never thought I'd see Kelleher's on Chowhound!

Definitely a welcome addition back to the area. In its former life, Kelleher's was a great local watering hole in a part of Roslindale without many other options. Or at least options were one can sit and have a few beers while watching the game or shooting some pool. I have heard that the person formerly in charge of the kitchen at the Corrib in West Roxbury will be establishing a similiar menu at the new Kellehers.

What was the story in Jimmy's Harborside?

"It is going to be the biggest LSF so far, with nice views of the water"

The biggest LSF ever! Same chain restaurant feel, just super sized... Is there some kind of zoning requirement in the seaport district that at least 90% of what opens must be totally devoid of uniqueness and charm. The barking crab often gets panned on this board as mediocre or worse and also a tourist trap, but at least you don't feel like you are at the Chestnut Hill Mall. I actually think Legal does a pretty good job foodwise, but do we really need another?

Kingfish Hall not what it was?

I was last at KingFish last October. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a few oysters and a beer while I pondered what else to order. I decided to order the cod entree. After finishing my beer I kept trying to make eye contact with my server in order to order another beer (even though I was at the bar I was at the end with the big pot, so the bartender was not serving me directly). It took what I felt was an inordinate amount of time to get my second beer, especially since the bar area was pretty empty. It took me almost as long to get my second pint of Harpoon as it did for my entree to arrive. I was ready to write the place off completely, and then my entree came. I enjoyed it so much it almost completely made up for the totally indifferent service. I wish I could give more details, but it was long enough ago I don't remember much more. All in all, the service seemed to be at the "lowest common denominator chain level", but the food was much better than that.

Movies by Moonlight & dinner, Boston Harbor Hotel?

Intrigue has been replaced by Sea Grill. I am not sure how the quality/price compares to Inrigue.

"Exotic Sushi & Tapas", has anybody been there yet?

Exotic Sushi & Tapas on the corner of High St. and Oliver St. in the financial district has been open for at least a few weeks now. Anybody been?

Eating "Between" Seasons on PEI

It is my understanding that for mussels, oysters, and also clams, there is no season per se. Rather, it is more a size issue. The seasons referred to in the link are for lobster fishing.

Best outdoor seating outside of Boston (Cambridge, Newton, etc, anywhere that you can park)

I love Geoffrey's, but I'd have to say that Sophia's Grotto takes the cake for outdoor dining in Roslindale. Very solid Mediterranean in a beautiful courtyard. Village sushi and grill is also very good and shares space in the courtyard. The Birch St. Bistro is also there, but IMO the American fare there is consistently inconsistent qualitywise (although every Thursday they feature a great band of rotating artists performing blues and old-school r&b, but that is indoors).
