I've been meaning to get there. How does it compare to Pio Pio?

Fino and BKNY are definitely two of the best restaurants in the area. Cana for Korean too, family style. I'm hoping a fellow Chowhounder can break down all of these other Korean joints that keep opening on Northern in Bayside but so far no luck.

I didn't mention Med Grill because it sounded like you were looking for more moderately priced options.

I had a good dinner at Thai 101 on Bell recently. I do Avli for Greek takeout. Never been to Blue Water. The new Indian place on Bell has a promising menu and I plan on going in the next few weeks. Durso's is my favorite Italian market.

I had the rainbow cookies with cannoli cream this weekend. Highly recommended.

Omaha

I'll be traveling to Omaha next week and I was wondering what the best places to eat and drink are. Will probably be looking to get a nice steak one night too. I'll be staying near the CenturyLink Center.

Burrata cheese around flushing

You can try Durso's on Crocheron. Not sure if they have it.
Fairway in Douglaston.
North Shore Farms on the border by Lake Success.
Ivarone's in Lake Success.
Plus there's the Italian store on 46th Ave off Utopia across from the meat store.

Montauk

I'll be going to Montauk for the first time in about 18 years in a few weeks.
What are the best places to hit? My wife is going to demand some seafood...

Bangane – A Korean Goat Specialist And One Of The Most Exciting Restaurants In Flushing

I'd love to hear what other recommendations you have over there. I was born and raised and still live near there but I find it overwhelming at times. My wife is Malaysian and we both lack fear but we like to have an idea of the place before we walk in.

best open late weekday restaurants takeout or sitdown in queens?

Anything specific? There are a plethora of Korean joints along Northern. Some Greek joints too. White Castle on Bell & Northern. The closer you get to Flushing the more likely something will be open.

Pan Bagnat: Le French Tuna Salad Sandwich

I also add some quality anchovies and use the olive oil from the tuna/anchovy cans. Good stuff.

Maki: Are any of these ingredients ever seen in Japan?

I found the department store food courts and some of the supermarkets to have an incredible amount of variety. You should check them out. Prices were generally reasonable too.

Jersey Fresh canned tomatoes in Queens?

My biggest issue with Fairway is their poor organization. There are several rows of canned tomatoes, not just one area. I have seen them tucked into one of their lower shelves in that area. Not lately though. They probably don't get that many and not until the fall.

Fairway in Douglaston does have them on occasion.

Have you ever lost your cooking Mojo?

Look to the classics, my friends. As someone who slumps periodically nothing beats a beef bourguignonne or some other kind of braise. Or try using an ingredient you never used before for a fresh start. I find when I use something new for the first time I never try to do anything except follow the recipe step by step so I don't have to order in Chinese food.

Have you ever lost your cooking Mojo?

I fall into what I call a "cooking slump" once a year or so when it just doesn't come together in the kitchen. I usually simplify things to get back into a groove. Tried and true recipes with a limited number of top quality ingredients that do a lot of the work for you. Like a pasta cabonara with an extra egg yolk or pasta with pesto with a nice extra dab of butter. Wine seems to help as well.

Uncle Jack's in Queens

Good quality but I'm pretty down on steakhouses. I prefer going to a great butcher and cooking it at home. Expensive, Manhattan prices. Crowd can be hit or miss like most places in Queens. Go to Fino across the street.

Arthur Avenue restaurants

I second Trattoria Zero Otto Nove. Same owner as Roberto's (ridiculously overpriced) and less than half the price.

Good point. Come to Queens. We rock.
I saw live frogs at NY Mart in Little Neck last week:

Edible frog market

Most of the Chinese supermarkets in Elmhurst and Flushing in Queens have live frogs in tanks in the seafood sections. There must be similar markets in Jersey.

Nassau/Suffolk Board

They really should. I live in Queens but eat in Nassau often since many of my friends and family live there. The combined population of Nassau/Suffolk approaches 3 million. More than any city but for NYC, LA and Chicago. It should not be mixed in with the rest of NY State. I stopped going on that board because it was too confusing.

Confusing Information on using and caring for pizza stones.

I've had a stone in my oven for about 10 years. It only leaves the oven when I need the room in there or for oven cleaning. I have never cleaned the stone except to brush off crumbs. It has never let me down.

NY Mart Douglaston ????

There are a few tables in the back to sit and eat. The produce is okay, not as good as H-Mart. A lot of "large" produce. You'll know when you see it. There are a few pastries in the back but not what I'd consider a bakery. I think there is a separate counter at checkout with ginseng. Not sure.
There is a decent bakery next door, Rich's. It has been there forever. It's a Western bakery, not Chinese.

You mean the Chinese market on Horace Harding? What are you looking for? Their roasted meats are good. Everything else is pretty average.

Roberto's in Bronx

They usually have a laundry list of specials that are tasty and pricey. Do not order a special without asking the price otherwise you may be shocked.
Last time I was there the osso bucco was great. As were several pasta dishes, we shared four of them. I think we had fresh tomato and pesto, some seafood pasta, a ravioli...
