Mama Lee: Taiwanese in Bayside

For pure pizza, VIP is superior to Vesuvio.
To the north Fino is good for tapas and some Italian.

Indian in/near Kew Gardens

I've been to the new Southern Spice a few times and I thought it was great. It's BYOB if you need beer to put out the fire. Even closer there are a number of Indian places on Hillside Avenue in Eastern Queens/Western Nassau before you hit Southern Spice. You can keep driving and SriPraPhai will be a little bit further on your left.

Long Gone But Not Forgotten! Outer Borough Memories

It was on Utopia Parkway and like 18th Avenue or so.
We used to hollow out the bread at the salad bar and stuff it with a few dozen shrimp and douse in cocktail sauce.
Fun times.

Suggestions for what to do with a quart of bacon fat?

I have had good results making confit with it. You can also use it as a fat for hearty salad dressings.

You can also make rilettes and use as an everyday fat for poultry and potatoes.

It's also a good fat for grilling breads for sandwiches or toasting them for salad croutons.

Indian/Thai/Vietnamese in New York.

Southern Spice was excellent the last time I was there.

Long Gone But Not Forgotten! Outer Borough Memories

My family went to Old Roma every other Sunday for about 30 years growing up. Such great memories.

Southern Spice is just across the border in Nassau County now and it was excellent the last time I went there.

Are you referring to Scobee Diner in Little Neck? I had more drunken meals there than any other place in my life.

There was also an Italian place in Little Neck on Horace Harding called Fra Diavlo. My parents used to bring that in on Saturdays.

And Rosa Maria pizza in Little Neck too was the bomb.

Pasar Malam- Malaysian restaurant in Williamsburg

I went there recently as well. I thought the asam laksa was very good. The roti canai and tom yum soup were good as well and am looking forward to trying the other rotis.
I satay babi (pork belly) was very good. My wife really liked the oyster omelet but that's not really my thing so I can't speak for it.
I thought the nasi lemak was pretty average but on par with what you would find in Malaysia. My wife and I always get the same thing on our first visit to Malaysian restaurants and base whether or not to return on their quality. We will definitely return and try other dishes.

Torta Neza location...

Joe would know. I see a store listing at:
53-06 Roosevelt Avenue
Woodside, NY 11377

I don't think the truck is open year-round. I remember it having a sign posting it's final day of the year sometime in the fall or somewhat.

That's the last place I saw it as well. North side of the street.

No place in my area sells chicory (the lettuce)

I run by there 4 or 5 times a week. I'll have to check it out.
Otherwise virtually every market in Northeast Queens has chicory including the Korean ones.

Best Bagels in Queens?

Very solid place as well. I think it'd still open 24 hours too.

Best Bagels in Queens?

Definitely Utopia Bagels. I used to live next to Ess A Bagel and they are just as good with better spreads.

And for the record I get the mini bagels. Bagels are supposed to be that size. They were super sized sometime around 1980 and not for the better. Just eat two, or three, or four minis.

chinese roast pork sandwich-new york deli style. help my dad please.

This sandwich was once a staple at the non-kosher Jewish style delis and diners in the area. My dad used to order it all the time. Can't say I've seen it around much lately.

Fino and BKNY are definitely two of the best restaurants in the area. Cana for Korean too, family style. I'm hoping a fellow Chowhounder can break down all of these other Korean joints that keep opening on Northern in Bayside but so far no luck.

I didn't mention Med Grill because it sounded like you were looking for more moderately priced options.

I had a good dinner at Thai 101 on Bell recently. I do Avli for Greek takeout. Never been to Blue Water. The new Indian place on Bell has a promising menu and I plan on going in the next few weeks. Durso's is my favorite Italian market.

Omaha

I'll be traveling to Omaha next week and I was wondering what the best places to eat and drink are. Will probably be looking to get a nice steak one night too. I'll be staying near the CenturyLink Center.

You can try Durso's on Crocheron. Not sure if they have it.
Fairway in Douglaston.
North Shore Farms on the border by Lake Success.
Ivarone's in Lake Success.
Plus there's the Italian store on 46th Ave off Utopia across from the meat store.

Bangane – A Korean Goat Specialist And One Of The Most Exciting Restaurants In Flushing

I'd love to hear what other recommendations you have over there. I was born and raised and still live near there but I find it overwhelming at times. My wife is Malaysian and we both lack fear but we like to have an idea of the place before we walk in.

best open late weekday restaurants takeout or sitdown in queens?

Anything specific? There are a plethora of Korean joints along Northern. Some Greek joints too. White Castle on Bell & Northern. The closer you get to Flushing the more likely something will be open.

I also add some quality anchovies and use the olive oil from the tuna/anchovy cans. Good stuff.

Maki: Are any of these ingredients ever seen in Japan?

I found the department store food courts and some of the supermarkets to have an incredible amount of variety. You should check them out. Prices were generally reasonable too.

Jersey Fresh canned tomatoes in Queens?

My biggest issue with Fairway is their poor organization. There are several rows of canned tomatoes, not just one area. I have seen them tucked into one of their lower shelves in that area. Not lately though. They probably don't get that many and not until the fall.

Have you ever lost your cooking Mojo?

Look to the classics, my friends. As someone who slumps periodically nothing beats a beef bourguignonne or some other kind of braise. Or try using an ingredient you never used before for a fresh start. I find when I use something new for the first time I never try to do anything except follow the recipe step by step so I don't have to order in Chinese food.

Have you ever lost your cooking Mojo?

I fall into what I call a "cooking slump" once a year or so when it just doesn't come together in the kitchen. I usually simplify things to get back into a groove. Tried and true recipes with a limited number of top quality ingredients that do a lot of the work for you. Like a pasta cabonara with an extra egg yolk or pasta with pesto with a nice extra dab of butter. Wine seems to help as well.

Uncle Jack's in Queens

Good quality but I'm pretty down on steakhouses. I prefer going to a great butcher and cooking it at home. Expensive, Manhattan prices. Crowd can be hit or miss like most places in Queens. Go to Fino across the street.
