Albany Chowhounds- How is Sitar?

Nothing ever lasts. Except maybe Jack's. And even Jack's changes over the eras. We should enjoy it while we have it.

By suggesting it's doomed to fail, one starts a self fulfilling prophecy in motion. I'm not naive, but rather a prisoner of hope.

I wish I was around for the Jordanian lady. But then again I wish I could have been around to try Albany Beef, before the fishery was trashed by pollution from progress. I wish I was around before the plaza was built and downtown was allegedly a thriving place. But I am here now. And now we have this really interesting place.

It would be great if people went.
Because naturally it won't be around forever.

Albany Chowhounds- How is Sitar?

There is a newish place called Tandoori on Wolf Road across the street from Colonie Center.

It's Pakastani, and they serve Pakastani style Chinese food. Which is really a bit mind blowing if you've never had it before. I'm not going to say it's wonderful, because it isn't. But it was a new taste experience for me, and that is the basis of my recommendation.

Apparently in Pakistan the second most popular cuisine is Chinese. And like in America, they have bastardized the cuisine to suit their own tastes. So Pakistani Chinese includes a dish called Sesame Chicken. Which is nothing like American Sesame Chicken. And like nothing you would actually find in China.

Who would think a place like this would exist in Albany?

New York's First Sonic Opening in Kingston!

I have never found the burgers at Five Guys to be dry. Just the opposite. I find them to be all about fat and grease. But in a good way -- scratch that -- in the best possible way.

Without all of that delicious fat, the burgers wouldn't be so incredibly beefy.

Wilton?

It's a little far north for me, so I don't make it up there too much.

But the Everglades BBQ is on my list of places to try next time I'm in that part of town.
827 Saratoga Rd, Gansevoort, NY 12831

Anyone been?

Tiznow (Saratoga Springs)

My expectation of farmed atlantic salmon is that it will always be bland. Just one of the many reasons I avoid it at restaurants.

I would have thought as a food lover you would already be on that bus.

Top Pizza in Capital Region?

No. It wouldn't. It doesn't.

Tried it on some strong recommendations.
Glad I did. But I see no reason to return.

Living in 2 Food Worlds (Capital Region & NYC)

Crisan has the least expensive gelato out of anywhere I've been yet.

I've had better, not in Albany mind you, but for a buck I'm not going to complain.
It is priced to please.

Dewey's Diner Colonie, NY

Thank you for writing this up. I couldn't agree more.

Dewey's Diner is one of my favorite things about living in Albany. There are just not that many places like it left across the country. Whenever people come in from out of town, I try to bring them by here.

Miss Albany Diner is far more popular. It's a prettier building. They have inventive dishes. But Dewey's is a diner. Truly a diner. Not some gussied up version of one. It's the real McCoy.

I just wish they served oatmeal through the summer.

Lounges in Albany Area

If you are looking for cocktails, I'd suggest the DP Brasserie. Here is a peek at their cocktail menu:
http://www.dpbrasserie.com/menus/dp-cocktail.pdf

It is on my to-do list especially since they stock creme de violette for their aviations. Sure, there are a lot of sticky sweet drinks on the menu I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole. But I'll happily sit at a bar that makes those if they can build a mean sazerac.

Let me know what you think.

Columbia County-Farm raised products?

In the northwestern part of the county you have Golden Harvest Farms. They have a farm distillery there.

It's called Harvest Spirits. They make an apple brand, pear brandy and surprisingly an apple vodka, which you really should taste. They have a tasting room, so you are in luck.

I wrote up a bit about them here: http://bit.ly/198sof

Enjoy.

Late night in Albany NY

I would check out New World Bistro Bar
http://newworldbistrobar.com/contact.html

It's open until midnight on Fridays. And it is one of the few places in Albany to actually resemble a real restaurant. It has a whole range of options from bar snacks to full meals. It may be a bit of a haul from the airport, but I'd say it's worth it.

Plus they have parking in back.

Albany?

Seriously, you didn't miss anything by missing Gershon's. It's another one of those "good for Albany" places.

I still need to check out Old World Provisions. I have hope that can save the Albany Deli scene. We'll see.

Top Pizza in Capital Region?

Depends what you are looking for. NY Style? Slices? Pies? Toppings? Will you be eating in or taking away?

Regardless, I'd rule out Homestyle, Smith's, and Sovrano's off the bat.

I would add Pasquale's on New Scotland Ave in Albany.
If you are looking for a NY Style slice shop, I'd also consider the hole in the wall that is DC on Western Ave across from SUNY.
The DeFazio's pies for eat-in are very good, if not in the NY stlye.

Best of luck.
