Everyday Desserts

I know this is not foody, but I like eating Cocoa Crispys or any other sugary cereal that I don't let myself eat for breakfast. I get my chocolate fix and a crunchy fix, and a healthy dose of milk or soymilk. Also, chocolate chip cookies. Make a batch of cookie dough, scoop them by the tablespoon, then freeze them. You can pop however many you want in the oven whenever you want. Stick a glass in the freezer while the cookies are baking and then you will have a icy cold glass ready for milk once the cookies are done.

The Prime Rib at Esquire Grill in Sacramento, CA

Peanut Butter

My mom used to eat plain potatoe chips spread with peanut butter and a pickle on top. I tried it and it good!

Rotation Beers for your fridge

mystiksc, we could be good friends. I think you have a nice spicey variety of hops in your fridge as well. Where do you get your Pizza Port Hop 15? Do they bottle it? I have never seen it here in N.Cal.

Guerneville weekend - tips?

if you like beer and bbq, try Stumptown Brewery. They have a huge deck overlooking the russian river and excellent beers on tap (they brew their own -Rat Bastard Ale). They also have great tunes on the jukebox.

KitchenAid food processor problems

I have the 3 cup mini prep and really love it. I just had to replace it with another one yesterday because the polycarbonate cracked. I have had it for about 5 years before this happened. I agree, it scratches easily.

Rotation Beers for your fridge

You are so lucky to have Stone Brewery in your back yard. We always have a 22oz of Stone Ruination in our fridge. We drink one a week. We always have Sierra Nevada in the fridge. Its very cheap here in Nor.Cal. At winter time we always stock up on cases of Sierra Celebration and mid winter we always drink Sierra Big Foot. Also usually have Speakeasy IPAs in the fridge. If Im in charge of beer, we almost always have IPA's in the fridge.

Camping Recipes

We just got the Coleman drip coffee maker and there is no going back. It was so great to have real coffee on our lasts camping trip. No sludge, no grounds. Just good coffee!

Refried Beans as Enchilada Filling?

It would be great. Go for it. Or you could freeze the mixture and use it for more burritos later.

Brew it Up! Brewery & Grill in Sac

I love The Rubicon. I can't get enough of their IPA's. I think The Rubicon is the only brewery in America that has good, cheap, and easy pub food.

Brew it Up! Brewery & Grill in Sac

If you are a beer gal, then I say go for it. They have lots of beers on tap to please everyone.

coffee and steak

I would love to hear how it turns out.

coffee and steak

I don't have a coffee marinating recipe but I do have this one:
I have yet to try this, it has been sitting in my "to try" file.

Espresso Crusted Fillet of Beef with Sweet Onion Confit

Serves 4

Ingredients
2 large yellow onions
1/3 cup unsalted butter
1 star anise
1 bay leaf
3 tsp. sherry vinegar
Sea salt and cracked black pepper
4, 10-ounce beef fillets
1/4 cup whole grain mustard
1 egg
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup walnuts, toasted
2 Tbs. espresso, finely ground
1/2 tsp. cinnamon, ground

To Prepare:

Slice onions 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Melt butter in a medium-sized skillet over medium heat. Add star anise, bay leaf and onions. Cook for 10 minutes. Remove star anise and bay leaf from pan. Reduce heat to low. Stir onions occasionally. Cook 15 to 20 minutes until onions are golden brown. Turn off heat and add sherry vinegar. Scrape onions from skillet and set aside.

While onions cook, place toasted walnuts in food processor and pulse until nuts resemble coarse sand. Stir in espresso, cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Transfer espresso mixture to plate. Set aside.

Whisk egg and mustard together. Brush tops and bottoms of fillets with egg-mustard mixture and then dip each fillet into espresso mixture; coat evenly.

Heat olive oil in skillet; add fillets. For medium-rare, cook fillets for 6 to 8 minutes on each side.

Baby Shower Food

3 of us girls threw one for our friend and we made 3 different types of salads and 3 diffrent dips along with bread for the dips and just plain eating. We made a pasta salad with orzo, peas and mint. Another leafy salad with mandarin oranges, avacados, olives, onions and a citrusy dressing, and another salad I can't recall. For the dips we made a parmesean dip, a artichoke dip and a hummus type dip. We also made mini cupcakes and set them out with the salads and dips so we could get the show on the road.

Seasoning for fajitas?

Marinade:
1 orange, juiced
2 limes, juiced
3 tablespoons canola oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 jalapeno, seeded and minced (use pickled if you don't have a fresh one handy)
1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, finely chopped
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon salt

I use this to marinade the meat a bit and I also pour a little on everything when done cooking. Sometimes I don't have the jalapenos and/or cilantro and it still turns out pretty good.

Yum-Yum Cookies -- Does Anyone Remember?

I also remember these. They were like the Girl Scout Samoas but a lot cheaper and a whole bunch more in the box. Now another dream (or not)....remember the cartoon Richie Rich? Richie Rich had a dog and I beleive he gave him dog treats called Yum-Yums....

Favorite Beer in America?

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is probably my favorite all american beer. I also love any well made I.P.A. My favorite is probably a tie between Stone Ruination and Bear Republic Racer Five I.P.A.

I need to find something to do with chocolate chips! ( besides cookies)

What about some trail mix or granola bars. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are one of my faves. Choc. dipped strawberries. You can make some sugar cookies and half dip them in chocolate, or choc. macaroons, or regular macaroons half dipped in chocolate.

Kosher Coke in Bay Area? (split from General Topics board)

The Chowhound Team moved this local "where do I find..." question from the General Topics board.
* * * * *

I have never heard of or seen kosher coke. Where does one find it in Northern California? I cut out all HFCS about 3 years ago and what a difference in my weight! My biggest weakness is Coke. I don't keep it in the house anymore but if we go out to eat or the movies I drink up. Where I live we have lots of mexican supermarkets and taquerias where you can buy mexican coke and pepsi in a bottle and those are made with cane sugar. I prefer the mexican coke/pepsi made with reg. sugar then the HFCS coke.

Peanut Butter

There is a Rachel Ray recipe for Peanut butter and bacon on banana bread. I think that sounds tasty. I love PB! I love a quick teaspoon full to curb my appetite. I love slicing a banana in half and spreading it with PB and a little drizzle of agave nectar. I also love dipping sliced apples in PB and PB on burnt toast. I prefer the Laura Scudder Natural PB as it has a little bit of extra salt in it that you can really taste. I didn't really care for the PB&Co chocolate PB but I did like the cinnamon swirl and the spicy one.

Davis: Friday Dinner, Saturday Lunch?

I agree with Tazzina, but if you are on your own on Saturday try walking over to 33rd St Bistro in Davis.

Wouldn't carrot cake be at least as good or even better without carrots... discuss.

I agree, the carrots get in the way of the yummy moist spice cake. And raisins also get in the way. Sometimes you just have to have something sweet but when you go to the store bakery all they have is carrot cake. So I give in and always say "this would be so much better without the carrots and raisins." I say this as I am finishing off the slice.

Best store bought healthy bread?

It seems like 95% of the breads out there all have HFCS. I like the Miltons breads and I also like the Costco/Kirkland Multi Grain bread they just started making about a year ago. They have no HFCS in them, they are pretty hearty and 2 loaves go for under $5.

Any Must Eats Along I-5?

I say waste some time at Granzella's. They have a huge menu with tasty pizzas as well. They also have a deli where you can order sandwitches to go. Even if you don't eat there, atleast pick up a jar of olives and check out their huge beer selection.

Butternut Squash Ideas

A friend of mine tossed it with some pasta and feta and a little olive oil. It tasted really good. You could use a whole grain pasta or use Barilla Plus pasta to make it more weight watching friendly.

Cool bottles in SF

I have yet to try it but very curious. I am also thinking of breaking down and buying a salad spinner.
