Best Certified KLP Ground Coffee

Certainly verify w/your local rabbi, but my understanding is that packaged unflavored, non-decaffeinated ground coffee that is certified kosher year-round (e.g. SBUX) does not require Pesach certification.

That said, any none-SBUX recs for packaged, high-quality ground coffee?

Another Pardes Review

Can you expand a bit on portion sizes? In relation to the glowing reviews for the food, the prices seem quite moderate -- esp. when compared to PG, Mike's or (gulp) Reserve Cut. I am wondering if the portions are not quite entree-sized. Assuming a party of four goes out to dinner, would each person be satisfied if they order individually? Or, do you recommend ordering, say, 5-6 dishes to be shared among the four people?

Best Shabbos Takeout in Williamsburg

I know Gottlieb's is supposed tobe the go-to heimishe restaurant, but who cooks the best takeout? I'm thinking of something akin to Meisner's in Boro Park.

Grill On Wheels Kosher Food Truck

Just came back from grabbing a late lunch. This was my first time and all they had left on the menu was the Crazy Chicken. The truck basically offers sandwiches that are variations on a base of shwarma, grilled chicken or chicken schnitzel.

I can only comment on what I ate: The main ingredients of Crazy Chicken are grilled chicken, sauteed peppers and onions, hummus, hot sauce and pickles on a grilled, crusty baguette. I was given spicy mayo and techina on the side. Cost: $10.50. The sandwich was quite tasty.

Since it is a beautiful day here in NYC, I ate al fresco on the plaza of the nearest office building. It was great eating a sandwich whose filling and bread was still agreeably hot. The flavors melded nicely and melted into the soft part of the bread.

Only two comments:

1. unlike most other food truck fare, this was not on the cheaper side. I know the drill about kosher is always more expensive (hashgacha by R' Aaron Mehlman), blah, blah, blah. But the prices here are more or less comparable to, say, KD prices. The only menu item under $10 is the beef/lamb burger. It would be great to see everything under $10 -- even $9.95.

2. the menu has nothing unusual or new and exciting to offer. Why are we kosher Jews not considered adventurous? I for one would be happy to try new and exotic flavors. Burgers, shwarma, grilled chicken and shnitzel? Hmmm...where have I seen that before.

Bottom line: what I ate was tasty, but not anything outside my kosher, Upper West Side-born now-living-in-the-suburbs comfort zone. "Reasonably" priced for kosher but not what I'd consider a bargain.

I do recommend it and would return.

If anyone has been, please share your comments. How does it compare to Taam Tov?

Also, what is the hashgacha?

Trader Joe's Greek Yogurt

It has a K-D designation. Does anyone know who is behind the K? Any way to find out from the folks at TJ's?

I know sometimes the K alone can be fine (eg. Kellogg's cereals), but other times not.

Le Marais

As a follow up, our family of 5 had a great meal. We ordered two of the steak au poivre, two medaillions of steak and one steak frites. All were cooked as requested and, yes, served hot!

Le Marais

Wow, quite a mixed review (not unlike those on Yelp). I think it's a given that everyone agrees the place is noisy and that service is...less than what it should be.

But, I'm puzzled how some of you (cheesecake17, Ilenem) have had horrible experiences with the food (e.g. steaks not cooked to order and served cold) while others rank it high. Sounds to me like it's a gamble. Hello kosher restaurant roulette, I suppose. Oy.

Le Marais

I'm going out tonight with my family and would appreciate any reviews and recommendations. It used to be a reliable spot for solidly prepared steaks at moderate prices -- at least when compared to Prime Grill et al. I'm wondering if LM still has the magic. Reviews on Yelp are very mixed.

New pizza joint in Riverdale

Corner Cafe is still open. Is Cafeccino under the Vaad of Riverdale. May be worth a visit based on your rave. Have you been to Pizza da Solo yet? I'd argue that's the best kosher pizza in NY.

Can someone provide updated info as to which brand(s) carry a hechsher, where to purchase and an opinion on taste?

The new Pizza da Solo offers a pizza with truffle oil. I wonder which brand they use?

FWIW, I haven't seen any kosher varieties at the Fairway in Pelham.

Whole Foods Market in NYC: Best kosher products?

The few times I've been to a WF it seemed to me that they do not stock very many kosher certified products, esp. when compared to Trader Joe's or Costco. A search of their website wasn't terribly helpful either.

They do have a small kosher section but the stocked items are the year-round go-to items like gefilte fish, grape juice and borscht. ;)

New Kosher Pizza- 56th and Madison (NYC)

It's almost funny to read everyone saying Pizza da Solo's pizza is the best they've ever had. I totally agree. What I find funny is that we all have been eating --excuse my Yiddish here--drek pizza for so long. This is the real thing folks: quality ingredients and a pizza maker dedicated to quality above all else. Crispy, charred crust. Not doughy and flavorless. Home-made fresh mozzarella, not so-called pizza cheese that comes packaged in huge bags and has zero flavor. And San Marzano tomato sauce, not canned low-grade sauce that often tastes like ketchup.

Unfortunately most kosher food offerings focus on quantity and turning a dollar and not quality. No doubt Joey is making good money with Pizza da Solo but, you know what? I am happy to hand over my money in exchange for top-flight food.

OK. I will step down from my pedestal now.

Best Fresh Baked Donuts in NYC?

No, don't even think of mentioning Dunkin'.

There seem to be many "artisan" donuts coming from hipster venues like Williamsburg (LOL!) but I'm unaware of any made under hashgacha.

Anyone?

Queens -- any hidden gems?

I'm looking for a good moderate-priced restaurant. Could be new or just not well-known. Nothing pricey like Chateau Steakhouse or old stand-bys like Grill Point, Hapisgah or Sushi Metsuyan.

Also looking for best pizza. Shimon's, Pizza Professor are blech, IMHO.

Chopita? (East 45th Street)

This spot seems to have opened only recently in the old Green Olive/Darna 2 Go location. Web site (http://chopitanyc.com) says it is kosher and the place is closed on shabbos but I don't see any mention of the specific kashrus certification. The web site does say everything is Beis Yosef shechita.

Anyoe have more info on the hashgacha and quality of the food?

Kosher NYC Restaurant(s) That Do a Top Job Delivering to Non-Kosher Restaurants

I will be dining with several people at a business dinner in NYC and would like to arrange for kosher food to be brought in for me. I know in the old days Levana was the go-to place and they did a fine job. Looking for recommendations/personal experience any Board members have had with the likes of Prime Grill, Le Marais, etc. Details please, including which dishes travel well under wraps and can best handle being reheated, and whether plating on china and getting metal utensils is an option (and whether the extra cost is ridiculous...).

Many thanks.
