Personal chef recs

@Ilenem, @Kosher_Fiend,

Thanks for the recs. Do you have a sense of price range pp? I'm looking for a private chef to prepare a dinner party in a private home for 10-20 people.

Apparently, they ran a Gilt City promotion before switching over to kosher. Figures, right?

butterfish restaurant in nyc turning kosher

Good to see the high prices are in-line with other restaurants under the Prime umbrella.

Finding a nice, quality fleishig restaurant in NYC to take a family of 5 without breaking the bank is a pipe dream. Only Le Marais comes close.

Prime At Bentley Hotel

Can anyone who has gone recently please share your views of the food, ambience, etc.?

I've heard mixed things about the food (from very good to supposedly that all the food is cooked off-site and merely reheated at the restaurant). Raves for specific dishes will be most appreciated.

Also, I've heard that the view is/was marred by renovation-related construction. Can someone please confirm one way or the other?

Bottom line, I'm looking for a nice Manhattan restaurant with good food to which I can take my family for a celebratory dinner.

Best mega kosher market in Williamsburg

I'm looking for a one-stop place comparable to Pomegranate or Evergreen/Rockland Kosher (Monsey). That is, butcher, take-out etc.

As an aside, Rockland Kosher has awesome homemade salami. Is there a salami macher in Williamsburg?

Great American Health Bar/57th Street

No such thing if owned and operated by a Jew during Pesach.

Great American Health Bar/57th Street

I have spoken with the Israeli-sounding fellow behind the register and he told me the same people own Classico.

Some people are willing to accept a different hashgacha when it comes to dairy. The Israeli fellow said they use only cholov yisrael, etc. You might be surprised to hear that I have seen Yiddish-speaking sheitel ladies and chassidim there -- not that that should be treated as a reliable indicator of the establishment's kashrus.

Over the past few months, I have bought soups and salads there. But, having seen that they were open over Pesach I may rethink eating there again.

The 57th St. corridor has virtually no choices other than this place and Classico, which I find overly expensive for what they serve. Soom Soom is over a few blocks southeast but offers middling quality for too many $.

Great American Health Bar/57th Street

I happened to walk by during chol hamoed and saw two things:

(1) The restaurant was open and (2) a sign in the window said it was not KLP certified.

I believe the restaurant is Jewish-owned by the same people who own Cafe Classico upstairs (which was closed for Pesach).

I'm curious what that means as far as year-round reliability of Great American's hashgacha.

Best Certified KLP Ground Coffee

Certainly verify w/your local rabbi, but my understanding is that packaged unflavored, non-decaffeinated ground coffee that is certified kosher year-round (e.g. SBUX) does not require Pesach certification.

That said, any none-SBUX recs for packaged, high-quality ground coffee?

Another Pardes Review

Can you expand a bit on portion sizes? In relation to the glowing reviews for the food, the prices seem quite moderate -- esp. when compared to PG, Mike's or (gulp) Reserve Cut. I am wondering if the portions are not quite entree-sized. Assuming a party of four goes out to dinner, would each person be satisfied if they order individually? Or, do you recommend ordering, say, 5-6 dishes to be shared among the four people?

Best Shabbos Takeout in Williamsburg

I know Gottlieb's is supposed tobe the go-to heimishe restaurant, but who cooks the best takeout? I'm thinking of something akin to Meisner's in Boro Park.

The store on 46th St. bet. 5th and 6th is already serving shwarma and I've been told the store on Lex and 55th will be switching soon. It appears the hashgacha remains unchanged

Grill On Wheels Kosher Food Truck

Just came back from grabbing a late lunch. This was my first time and all they had left on the menu was the Crazy Chicken. The truck basically offers sandwiches that are variations on a base of shwarma, grilled chicken or chicken schnitzel.

I can only comment on what I ate: The main ingredients of Crazy Chicken are grilled chicken, sauteed peppers and onions, hummus, hot sauce and pickles on a grilled, crusty baguette. I was given spicy mayo and techina on the side. Cost: $10.50. The sandwich was quite tasty.

Since it is a beautiful day here in NYC, I ate al fresco on the plaza of the nearest office building. It was great eating a sandwich whose filling and bread was still agreeably hot. The flavors melded nicely and melted into the soft part of the bread.

Only two comments:

1. unlike most other food truck fare, this was not on the cheaper side. I know the drill about kosher is always more expensive (hashgacha by R' Aaron Mehlman), blah, blah, blah. But the prices here are more or less comparable to, say, KD prices. The only menu item under $10 is the beef/lamb burger. It would be great to see everything under $10 -- even $9.95.

2. the menu has nothing unusual or new and exciting to offer. Why are we kosher Jews not considered adventurous? I for one would be happy to try new and exotic flavors. Burgers, shwarma, grilled chicken and shnitzel? Hmmm...where have I seen that before.

Bottom line: what I ate was tasty, but not anything outside my kosher, Upper West Side-born now-living-in-the-suburbs comfort zone. "Reasonably" priced for kosher but not what I'd consider a bargain.

I do recommend it and would return.

Trader Joe's Greek Yogurt

It has a K-D designation. Does anyone know who is behind the K? Any way to find out from the folks at TJ's?

I know sometimes the K alone can be fine (eg. Kellogg's cereals), but other times not.

Le Marais

As a follow up, our family of 5 had a great meal. We ordered two of the steak au poivre, two medaillions of steak and one steak frites. All were cooked as requested and, yes, served hot!

Le Marais

Wow, quite a mixed review (not unlike those on Yelp). I think it's a given that everyone agrees the place is noisy and that service is...less than what it should be.

But, I'm puzzled how some of you (cheesecake17, Ilenem) have had horrible experiences with the food (e.g. steaks not cooked to order and served cold) while others rank it high. Sounds to me like it's a gamble. Hello kosher restaurant roulette, I suppose. Oy.

Le Marais

I'm going out tonight with my family and would appreciate any reviews and recommendations. It used to be a reliable spot for solidly prepared steaks at moderate prices -- at least when compared to Prime Grill et al. I'm wondering if LM still has the magic. Reviews on Yelp are very mixed.

New pizza joint in Riverdale

Corner Cafe is still open. Is Cafeccino under the Vaad of Riverdale. May be worth a visit based on your rave. Have you been to Pizza da Solo yet? I'd argue that's the best kosher pizza in NY.
