Nobo Wine & Grill

I considered Etc. (which I have not visited yet) but they only offered a $65 prix fixe menu for Father's Day.

Nobo Wine & Grill

First time visit yesterday, for Father's Day dinner.

We had to wait 10-15 mins. beyond our reservation time to be seated. Not terrible but we told the manager we'd wait outside and it would have been nice if he had come out to tell us they were running behind. Instead, we came inside to check on our table only to be told it wasn't ready yet.

Our waitress was terrific in describing the specials and taking our orders. (Unfortunately, I didn't catch her name.)

We were a party of 5 and ordered 3 apps to share: Slow-roasted lamb riblets (5 riblets), short rib bokembap and crisp veal salumi flatbread (cut into 4 quarters). All were delicious.

For our mains, we ordered: Pan-roasted sous vide Chateaubriand for two, pan-roasted veal chop, pan-roasted sous vide chicken breast and sous vide duck two ways. It appears the chef is doing a good job amortizing the cost of his sous vide device. The portions were generous.

The Chateaubriand was served sliced, along with sauteed haricot verts and crushed Yukon gold potatoes, to display the rosy pinkness of its medium rare preparation. The meat was tender but had some kind of a flavor element that I found hard to pinpoint. If I didn’t know better, I’d say it tasted slightly of plastic. I thought it might be a by-product of the sous vide process, but the other sous vide dishes did not have the same taste to them. Odd.

The pan-roasted chicken breast (served with green and white asparagus gratin, forest mushrooms, black plum jus, green garlic, mushroom gel) and duck two ways (accompanied by duck shmaltz clafouti, sautéed purslane, strawberry rhubarb duck jus, port drizzle, green strawberries) were both well-prepared and very tasty.

The veal chop (served with butter bean and veal salumi ragout, carrot/veal glace, celery root puree, parsley-filbert pesto) was quite sizeable and well-cooked to medium, as requested. The outside had really nice charred crustiness to it. However, it was way over-salted and the side dish was even more salted. When I mentioned that to the waitress she said she’d convey my comment to the manager. A few minutes later she returned to say that the manager told her the veal chop was always a bit salty (!) but that the veal chop served at dinner was even saltier than usual (!!). Seriously? Of course, there was nothing on the menu pointing out this was a particularly salty dish.

We found the dessert menu uninspiring and were stuffed regardless, so we passed on dessert.

The wine list was quite decent, but I couldn’t subject myself to the price mark-ups. I had asked about BYOB but was told it was not permitted. I’m a huge proponent of BYOB and happy to pay a corkage fee (so long as it is not exorbitant), so was disappointed. I will point out that Etc., across the street, allows BYOB but then again they do not have a wine license.

I would return to Nobo, but be careful to ask a few pointed questions about how the various dishes are prepared before ordering.

Bedford Restaurant

Per the restaurant's website, they were closed for a few days -- possibly, they were overwhelmed. Can someone confirm they have reopened?

Italy - Milan, Venice, Florence?

In Milan, Re Solomon is outstanding and, compared to US kosher restaurants, ridiculously affordable. Italian food and, yes, Israeli options as well. In Venice, Chabad operates the fleishig Gam Gam and a pizza shop as well. The non-kosher owned bakery has kosher-certified items. There's also a dairy cafe in the Jewish Museum. Florence has Ruth's.

Hummus 21

The other day walked by what appears to be a new restaurant, named Hummus 21. It's on First Ave. between 57th and 58th Streets. I can't speak to the food because the restaurant is open on Shabbos and I am unsure if the owner is Jewish or not. Hashgacha is R' Zev Schwarcz.

Prime Grill recs

Curious what people are liking these days at PG. Since they moved, IMHO the food quality has become spotty/spottier, service has declined and prices have skyrocketed.

Recently, I had the crispy rice app and flatiron steak. The former was tasty but a small portion, the latter totally lacked flavor.

Mike's Bistro

I've walked by the new location in Midtown East several times, but have yet to dine there. I understand that so far Mike's is open for dinner service only; I wonder why they're not doing lunch?

If you have dined at the new location please share your opinion of what dishes to order. Is it pretty much the old Mike's menu or is it totally revamped?

TIA.

Miami Beach: best steak, breakfast

So, Rare was closed. Apparently they had a flood 2 weeks ago. Following all too typical kosher restaurant practice, their web site says nothing at all. I went to Grill House. The variety of complimentary salads they put out when you are seated was solid and the hummus with ful was VG. Unfortunately it was brought out with my main, rather than earlier as an appetizer. The butcher's cut steak was cooked pretty close to the requested medium rare but was average. Not real flavorful. I didn't have time to catch breakfast but know where to go next time.

Pardes: new menu section, attentive service, creative small plates still amazing

Pardes First Timer Alert: So the family and I will be going out to dinner this Sun. The comments on this thread have been real helpful but, all the same, I am asking for a recommended/must-have dish or two.

Also, can someone post a few comments about the wine list?

Does Pardes allow one to bring one's own wine? I know with many kosher restaurants the concept of doing so (whether or not they charge a corkage fee) is a foreign one.

A good salami

Rockland Kosher in Monsey has a variety of homemade salamis. They are moderately priced (about $10) and in various stages of dryness.

Personal chef recs

I'm unclear how the kosher supervision works at Kitchensurfing. The site says that "All ingredients will be strictly sourced from Glatt-Kosher markets." How does someone confirm that to be true? Even assuming that all meat is glatt and all other products are strictly kosher, what about preparation? Although each chef is expected to "provide any and all equipment and supplies they will need," it appears some of the chefs on the kosher link also prepare non-kosher meals. Sure, one can have the chef use one's own equipment but chances are most people don't have a professional-equipped kitchen.

Good to see the high prices are in-line with other restaurants under the Prime umbrella.

Finding a nice, quality fleishig restaurant in NYC to take a family of 5 without breaking the bank is a pipe dream. Only Le Marais comes close.

Prime At Bentley Hotel

Can anyone who has gone recently please share your views of the food, ambience, etc.?

I've heard mixed things about the food (from very good to supposedly that all the food is cooked off-site and merely reheated at the restaurant). Raves for specific dishes will be most appreciated.

Also, I've heard that the view is/was marred by renovation-related construction. Can someone please confirm one way or the other?

Bottom line, I'm looking for a nice Manhattan restaurant with good food to which I can take my family for a celebratory dinner.
