Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

You didn't win me over with your review, I can get fish at any restaurant so I think I will pass.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

I love L'Inctontro for Northern Italina cuisine, not Greek of course. For Greek we go to Mezzo Mezzo and Agnanti. Ethos is not the place to go on a Saturday night, the service is lousy and they always get your order wrong. The food is just average. We will try Trata in Roslyn but not on a Sat night either, the branch on the Upper East Side in Manhattan is very good. I will try Limani for brunch one weekend -- maybe.

Luzzo's Coal Oven Pizza - Westbury

I'm not giving it a second shot to disappoint. I will stick to Umberto's in New Hyde Park which is always delicious with great service. Why take the chance?

Luzzo's Coal Oven Pizza - Westbury

The whole experience was second rate. I should have left when I saw that the ladies room was dirty, out of toilet paper and had a broken faucet. Would have gone to Cheesecake Factory if I knew I didn't have to wait an hour on a Sat night for a table. Service was poor, waiters were young and inexperienced. The vegetable pizza was absolutely tasteless. Stick to Umberto's in New Hyde Park or Grimaldi's in Garden City.

Circa Ristorante Enoteca

Hi Robin, I went here on your suggestion. I agree that t's a nice restaurant and the food was good. But the bread basket was not replaced by the busboys nor were the water glasses refilled. So we had to ask our waitress for both. It wasn't that noisy on a Sat. night, maybe bec. we were sitting in the corner. But overall I give it a fair. So I won't be returning in the future.

Tony Roma's to open at Bay Terrace Shopping Center

Panera is supposedly opening this month, thankfully. The diner stinks so at least Panera serves decent salad, soup great bread by the pound. I was told from a reliable source that an Italian restaurant and steakhouse will be opening but it's probably going to be a chain like Outback, etc. Don't think anyone in Bay Terrace is looking to spend a lot on a steak, etc. Look at the restaurants they now have -- the diner,Applebee's, Ben's. When we had Shoe Box, an upscale womens shoe store, it closed in a year. No one will pay full price in this area. Since there are a lot of teenagers and retirees in Bay Terrace, the restauarants cater to them, not to those who spend $42 on a steakhouse. To eat well you have to travel East into at least Great Neck or west to Astoria. I live locally and NEVER eat anywhere in Bayside except for Avli on Bell Blvd. What does that way about the level of dining the area offers?

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

I hear you, we don't go to L'Incontro more than 4 times per year and I always look forward to it because we don't go that often. Have you been to Cavo in Astoria? It's a little pricey but a gorgeous restaurant and great to go in the summer when you can dine in their outdoor garden. Aegean Cove in Astoria was very good, also Philoxenia. I will post my review of the new French restaurant In Astoria in May when we eat there.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

What we always do (only if we plan to return because we love the food) is to leave a very small tip and tell the manager why. If you are not going back then just leave a small tip and say nothing. A 20% tip is for great service only.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

Robin, I think I will pass on Limani, there are other Greek restaurants we keep on going back to in Astoria. You can get good food at many restauarnts, it's the service that brings us back. Like you, that's why we love Trattoria L'Incontro in Astoria. Last month my hubby went skiing and my girlfriend and I went on a Sat. night. We were the only 2 women dining alone. Our waiter was fab and Rocco brought us hazelnut gelato on the house. Nowhere else do they treat you so well. That's why it's always packed. I have the same experience at West End Cafe -- great food, service, ambience, etc.

FYI - There is a new French restaurant in Astoria called Bistro les Minots that sounds ground and we will try soon. They have a price fixed dinner every night untioll 7 PM for $19.95. Also we passed Caffe Barocco on Nassau Blvd in Garden City and stopped by to get a menu. They serve only tapas and European wine by the glass. It's very reasonable and something different to try rather than another pretentious expensive restaurant.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

It should have been off the charts for that price -- it's JUST food. Being a woman I would much rather buy a handbag or jewelry, at least I have something to show for it the next day. Other than 2 lbs on the scale.

On another note my husband and I were planning to go for Valentine's Day to Bistro M in Glen Cove which I heard was very good. But it's $80 per person plus drinks for a 3-course meal. And they only offer a choice of 4 appetizers and 4 entrees. Salmon with a salad and dessert is not worth $80 to me at any restaurant. It's another $200 meal. They raise the prices because it's Feb. 14th. We are going instead to Bistro Citron in Roslyn which has a very nice menu and something different for a change. And no surcharge for the holiday. I used to not think anything about spending $200 at Peter Luger's. My priorities in 2009 have shifted considerably.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

I haven't been to Mulino but if they are offering a lower priced dinner on Sundays, then obviously it's not packing them in anymore on that night of the week. I'm sure the brunch at Limani's is delish but it's still close to $150 by the time you add on beverages, tax and tips. I used to like the brunch at River Bay. It was about $20 per person and had a large variety of both hot and cold entrees. The steakhouses will always be crowded especially during lunch a la expense account. I work in Manhattan and I'm a few blocks away from the Palm. Del Frisco, Ben Benson, Uncle Jack's and Ruth Chris. I'm sure after 6 PM most nights they are empty.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

Tom, it sounds good but my priorities have changed given the state of the economy. I thought I would try Limani for brunch but to charge $50 per person is about double what I would spend. I heard the brunch at Bistro Citron is very good. Anyone try that? To spend $200 for dinner in this economy is ridiculous unless it's a special occasion and even then. If less patrons dined at Limani, Peter Luger's, Il Mulino, etc. they would be forced to lower their prices. I have been to virutally every 5* restaurant in L.I. and NYC and to me it's JUST food. The next day it means nothing and you forget what you had anyway. In my opinion, I think more people on L.I. and Queens who lost their jobs, or 40% of their assets in the market or with Bernie Madoff, are looking to conserve and spend less on dining out.

Limani in Roslyn or Oevo in Great Neck?

I went there when it was Bardi and it was very average food and catered to an older crowd. After reading NYJewboy's review of Oevo I'll be sure to pass. Same with Limani. I have been to Milos in NYC and I'm sure it's the same price point if it's fish by the pound. I'll stick to Astoria for Greek food, Cavo and Agnanti being my favorites.

Limani - Roslyn

Anyone try this new Greek restaurant on Northern Blvd. where Saturn used to be? If it's like Milos in Manhattan it will be delicious but very expensive charging fish by the pound.

Circa Ristorante Enoteca

I agree, I don't like Southern Italian food either. I used to be a big fan of Parkside but that got played out too. Most of the time we either go for sushi (Kotobuki, Blue Fin), Mexican (Besito), Continental (West End Cafe), L'Incontro (No. Italian) or Mim's for everything in between. With the economy as it is we don't like to waste $150+ on a meal if it's just mediocre. I think I will pass on Circa for the time being, thanks for posting the review and your reply.

Circa Ristorante Enoteca

Hi, I also read the review on Newsday. It doesn't sound like Sat. night is the time to dine here. I myself hate to go to restaurants when I can't hear myself talk, that's not relaxing to me. And the tables being too close is another negative. What did you eat that was so delicious that I should be motivated to go here? At this point I wonder why you would want to go back again.

BEST PIZZA ON LONG ISLAND

My two top favorites are: Umberto's in New Hyde Park (Grandma's sicilian) and Grimaldi's in Garden City (as good as the one by the B'klyn Bridge). I have been to Nick's in Forest Hills and will try the branch in Rockville Centre next. Also Patsy's in Syosset is the best in that area of L.I.

Arcos Restaurant --- Astoria

33-05 Broadway. I think it used to be Roumeli Taverna, down the block from Omonia Cafe.

Arcos Restaurant --- Astoria

I will try it on November 8th and will post my results then. Thanks for the recommendations. See my other posts for Greek, Japanese and Italian cuisine in Astoria and Long Island.

Arcos Restaurant --- Astoria

I plan to try a new Portugese restaurant in Astoria next month. It's called Arcos Anyone dine here and can offer an opinion?

Aegean Cove Astoria Rocks!

There are always vegetarian restaurants associated with Greek cuisine -- lots of dips, soup, fava beans, vegetable croquettes, etc. Other than a vegetarian restaurant it's the best place for you to have a selection to choose from. The prices are moderate unless you order a whole fish which just say on the menu "Market Price", those would probably be in the $30-35 range I assume. If you order fish or pasta it would be around $20-25, the same as every other restaurant. Food has gone up about 20% this year and this spills over to the restaurant world as you know.

Aegean Cove Astoria Rocks!

I have to agree with your review having had dinner here last night with my husband. It is a pretty restaurant with excellent service and food. It's off the beaten track and easy to park which is a definite plus in Astoria. Tables are spaced nicely and the restaurant is bright and it's a pleasure to read your menu without a flashlight as with most restaurants. We both enjoyed our Greek wine and our appetizers of crab cake and seafood croquettes. My husband had the pasta with shellfish and I had the baby lamb chops. The yogurt dessert was delicious and a nice added touch. All in all a nice dining experience. There were large parties which made the restaurant pretty noisy on a Saturday night, would try again next year when we can sit upstairs and dine upstairs.

FYI -- there are some excellent restaurants in Astoria worth your trip over the bridge. Some of our favorites are: Trattoria L'Incontro (our favorite Italian - make reservations 2 weeks in advance); Agnanti, Mezzo Mezzo, Philoxenia and Cavo (all Greek). Try Artopolis Bakery and Mediterranean Foods on 31st Street for some great dips and bread.

N.West Nassau County- Chow-Worthy?

Went to Wild Ginger years ago. I agree it was very good but to avoid a long wait you have to go at 6 PM on Saturdays. Really don't want to dine so early. I have heard that Toku is very good but the portions are very small and it is very pricey. It's probably the former Millie's crowd. I don't need to be at the latest "see and be seen" trendy restaurant either. And in respose to Stuart's comment about China Grill, just so you know, it has gone very downhill this past year. Maybe because of the soaring food prices in general. Went two months ago and as crowded as it used to be that's how empty it is now. On a Wed. at 8:30 PM it should have been packed. The quality of the food presently is average at best. I work across the street and it was always my favorite Asian fusion restaurant in Manhattan. Baang in Woodbury Commons has the same exact menu and great mango martinis.

N.West Nassau County- Chow-Worthy?

The sushi restaurant f/k/a Saku, f/k/a Oyama now known as Blue Fin is delicious and a block north of Daruma. Everyone runs to Daruma which in my opinion is mediocre at best, it's just been in GN the longest. We've tried Kotobuki in Roslyn twice (28 in Zagat) and is fab. Their appetizers and rolls can't be beat, you just have to know when to go. Sunday nights in the Summer seems to be the least crowded; Sat. night after 6:30 there's a long wait. If you want to go more for more upscale Japanese food, try Nissen Sushi in Woodbury.

Nissen? (Woodbury, LI)

Dined at Nisen Sushi in Woodbury last night. It was just excellent. What a gorgeous restaurant too! They play blaring Japanese instrumental music which would be the only drawback. I have to report that the sushi and sashimi were just delicious and prepared very creatively. My husband ordered some special blue sake which came in its own bottle, it looked like Aqua Velva cologne from the 70's. He said it was delicious and milder than the usual cheap hot sake you get in most Japanese restaurants. FYI -- there are 2 pages of sakes listed on the menu. As appetizers, my husband had a spicy tuna sashimi pizza and I had the three sashimi appetizer, both winners. We shared a few rolls and each was better than the next; all fish was very fresh. I only remember one was called the Woodbury Roll. The men next to us told us that the fish and meat entrees are really the way to go. They have a great selection of snapper, short ribs, lamp chops and according to the NY Times review they are supposed to be excellent. In my estimation, the entrees were just as good as Kotobuki in Roslyn so there's stiff competition. Nisen takes reservations; Kotobuki after 6 PM has a line out the door and they take no reservations so that would be the only difference. The bill was steep so be prepared, about $175 for two with drinks. If you order meat or fish entrees the bill would be even higher. If anyone goes let me know if you concur with my review.

George Martin - Douglaston

Dined at George Martin's in Douglaston last night. Food was good, service awful, extremely noisy, very pricey. Our table was cleared while my husband was still eating, he had to reprimand the busboy and our waiter. Our waiter disappeared after we put in our dinner order and we had to ask the hostess to order us another round of drinks. My husband asked for free dessert because of the spotty service and we received it but we will not return. For the same money I can go to any steakhouse on Long Island. I will stick to my two standing favorites: West End Cafe and Trattoria L'Incontro for better food, prices and service.

Brivo -- Roslyn Heights

It looks like a hunting lodge and everything came hot and looked very appealing. All steakhouses get the same aged meat, it's just a matter of preference. I think however it would be quite noisy on a Sat. night and you would feel rushed. They also don't have any carpeting which doesn't help matters. I think Sunday or mid-week is the way to go.. I assume Brooks & Porter is a steakhouse too, correct?

Brivo -- Roslyn Heights

Wow, you certainly did not have the experience we had back in January. And I'm VERY fussy. I always move if they stick me near the kitchen or a noisy large party or even if the a/c is blowing on me. And if the service is poor I always complain when I leave or send food back if it's cold or not cooked enough. I do however have a good report on Blackstone steakhouse in Melville. Went there last night (4/27) for my birthday and I had the antipasto salad and lobster which were both great. My husband had an incredible sushi roll along with filet mignon. Their wine list is extensive and we had two very attentive waiters. It's a very nice looking restaurant and we will surely return. They also own Burton & Doyle and Rothman's.

We're dining at the new George Martin's in Douglaston on 5/10 -- will post my reviews in two weeks.

George Martin - Douglaston

Thanks for the rec., I will definitely dine here in the next month.

George Martin - Douglaston

Anyone dine yet at the Queens branch of this Rockville Centre restaurant? Heard they finally take reservations.
