Arabic Restaurants in Detroit Metro -- Another Inquiry
Al-Aimeer on West Warren at Miller Road. Delicious, authentic, cheap.
Arabic Restaurants in Detroit Metro -- Another Inquiry
If you drive down Michigan Avenue in east Dearborn you'll see fifteen (at least) Arabic restaurants, all good, all very cheap. West Dearborn is heavily Arabic so that's really all you'll see. If you are in west Dearborn you'll find La Shish, the mother of all Arabic restaurants. It's also one of the few in that area that serves wine.
I will try to get the name of the restaurant where I last ate in Dearborn - it was stunning food and heaps, MOUNDS of food. Cheap and delicious. It was on a corner.
Sushi in Metro Detroit
If you're going to the Red Wings, have dinner at Oslo first. On Woodward on Merchant's Row. You can park by Greektown, take the People Mover to Oslo then to Joe Louis Arena. Good sushi, hip as hell.
Best Meal In/Around Detroit and Milwaukee - money not a concern - please help!
I'll never understand the Zingermans cult. It was okay back in the day but long lines for tired food never did it for me.
The Cook's Shop in Windsor is another destination spot, jump over the Detroit River and have classic bistro food. You'll need your birth certificate or passport.
Has anyone mentioned Sweet Lorraine's? The original in Southfield is still great, I haven't been to the downtown one but it's a nice looking room.
Good eats in Novi, Livonia, Farmington, Northville--MI anyone???
Habana Cafe is on Main and 5th in Royal Oak, attached to Bastone, which has pretty damn good Belgian bistro fare (and brewrey). Also attached is Vinotecca wine bar. Nice small plates.
I ate at Josephine's Creperie and Bistro last Saturday night, Nine Mile and Woodward in Fabulous Friendly Ferndale. Very very good.

If money is not a concern, go to the Lark, in suburban Detroit. One of the best French country-style restaurants anywhere.

The BEST places to eat in Detroit/suburban area
I ate at Josephine's Creperie and Bistro in Ferndale last night, very good. They make their own wine, a Cabernet Franc and a Chardonnay. I had the Franc and it was very nice, soft and dry. $7/glass.
I will always love Lepanto in Royal Oak. I know it's not the Lepanto of 15 years ago, but it's still very very good.

A friend took my husband and I to the Lark for our 25th wedding anniversary. I got sticker shock, but I also had one of the best dinners of all time. The food was divine, the schmooze was just as good. I can't imagine ever going back, I'm much more of a bistro girl, but it was really a stellar night.
Thai in Detroit West Subs.-Farmington Hills, Novi, Northville, etc.
Thai Bistro is wonderful. In R.O. I like Thai on Main quite a bit.
Thanksgiving Take-Out in Detroit Metro Area
Holiday Market in Royal Oak will cook everything but the bird.

Best Bread in Detroit Region
Is Holiday baking bread again? I live a stone's throw of the original Holiday and they buy their bread from Superior.
Best Bread in Detroit Region
There is a small baker in Livonia, I think it's in a residential area, Superior Bakery. The best baguette in the city. Plain white bread, perfect crust, delicious bread. They make a great bread bowl too. There are plenty of great bakeries out there, but if you want a plain loaf, look for Superior.
Best Bread in Detroit Region
Still and always, Avalon Bakery. On Willis Street in the Cass Corridor. mmmmmmmmm. C'mon. Everyone gets a bad loaf once in a while.

I was going to recommend the Rattlesnake Club until I checked the menu and saw they were serving foam. Astounding view, though.
Try Atlas Gobal Bistro on Woodward Ave. between downtown and the Cultural Center. 3111 Woodward at Charlotte.
Or Cuisine or Streetside Seafood. Both good recommondations.
If you have too much money, try the Lark. Incredible.
Only One Dinner in Detroit on a Sunday?
Yeah, LaShish is very good. I could live on the hot pita that they will keep bringing to your table as long as you sit there and eat it.
Need Dinner Rec in Greektown (Detroit)
Cyprus. New Hellas is just not consistent any more. I'm sorry to say.
Detroit - Food Recs for watching the World Series
CorporateAmerica Park is right next to a hopping little restaurant scene. Oslo for sushi, Vincente's for a cuban sandwich, Lolas for anything on the menu. You can head north on Woodward and get divine middle eastern-ish fusion food at the Majestic.
Only One Dinner in Detroit on a Sunday?
You can't even talk to the Ann Arbor people. If you were to make the drive out that way, give it another 15 minutes and go to the Common Grill in Chelsea.
Downtown Detroit gets better every day. The entire Metro area is full of wonderful restaurants. Ferndale, Royal Oak. If you like Middle Eastern food, and don't require a drink, drive into Dearborn, where every corner has sensational food.
You could also consider a trip across the river to Windsor and have wonderful Italian or Continental food. Erie Street has a Little Italy section, I'd recommend Spago.
Need Dinner Rec in Greektown (Detroit)
Sweet Lorraine's on Jefferson just out of Greektown is excellent, part of a very small chain (Detroit, the original in Southfield and a lunch counter in Madison Heights). Good wine list. It's in the Courtyard Marriot, but this is not a hotel restaurant!
If you do choose the Cyprus Taverna, get the lamb oreganato. The problem with Greektown is lousy wine.
You could wander (I know it's crummy outside) over to Harmonie Park and eat at Lolas or if you're not in a hurry, Vincente's Cuban Cuisine.
I have a pal who is a huge Andiamo fan, but after the last two visits to the RenCen, won't go back. Bad food, worse service. I hope they get it together.
Best hamburger in Metro Detroit?
O'Toole's in Royal Oak. Big, perfectly cooked, good cheese. They have lunchtime deals too. Good beer selection. If you can stand the old cigar smell, it's wonderful.
Chestnuts
My brother in law, the mad organic farmer, dropped off a giant veg box yesterday; a wealth of eggplant and peppers and onions and carrots and squash (4 different kinds!). Also a huge bag of chestnuts. Aside from cueing up the Nat King Cole, I have no idea what to do with chestnuts. Any ideas?
Chuck Muer's and other seafood
Streetside in Birmingham is very wonderful. Tom's Oyster Bar is not what it used to be, but you can still get a wonderful plate of oysters there. Both Grosse Pointe and Royal Oak locations.
To buy fish, Superior Fish in Royal Oak (11 Mile and Main) is good. The fish counter at Holiday Market (Main Street just off 696) gets better and better but not cheaper. Make plans to go to Eastern Market on a Saturday morning, there are several very good fish places, plus the market is a destination spot on it's own. You can get fresh local produce, fish, freshly killed chickens, beef and flowers! Take a cart. Then go to Viviano's or Russel Street Deli (don't mind the wait and sit with strangers, best way to get to know the city.)
Quintessential Detroit Food
The chili in a Detroit coney is a puree-no chunks till you get to the onions. Do you know that most coney places will sell you frozen cubes of the stuff?
I think every refrigerator in the metro Detroit area has a tub of hummus somewhere in it.
Evie's Tamales. On Bagley. Call ahead and get the ones with the peppered masa with a chicken filling. Or just load up on the house tamales. Cold beer, Evies Tamales.
Vietnamese in Detroit MI
Vietnamese Sandwiches (Banh Mi) are the most delicious things in the world. It makes me want to cry, thinking of someone eating at Buffalo Wild Wings when they could be having a perfect grilled pork Viet Sandwich.
I can't find my card from the place that used to be Vy-Nga (it's 3:25 am) but it's at 13 Mile and John R. Completely worth the trip. The pho is good too and all their stir frys but you have to go to Windsor or New York or Toronto to get a Banh Mi as good as this.
Beer garden in the Detroit area?
In Royal Oak (of course!) you have Bastone, Lily's Seafood and Royal Oak Brewing. I wish Bastone had more room out front but I do love their food.
Slow's BBQ in Detroit
I've been to Slows a couple times now. The first time was a disaster, very slow service (one person didn't get her entree till we had all eaten), several entees unavailable, several drink choices unavailabe. yet...
The bbq was so good, the sides were so delicious we decided to try again. The next two trips were wonderful. If you have a big group they will take a reservation, so grab some friends and go.
I had some friends from Paris staying with me in early August, one day they struck out on their own and drove around the city. They called from Slows, saying we have found the most beautiful bar! Is the food good? I said oui.
